For most YouTube creators who want control, Linux support and an open-source tool, OBS Studio is the better starting point. Streamlabs Desktop may suit you better if you prefer guided setup, want to import an existing OBS configuration, or need its documented multitrack recording workflow. Neither app is proven to deliver better recording quality or use fewer computer resources in every setup; your settings, content and hardware matter.

OBS vs. Streamlabs for YouTube screen recording

What matters OBS Studio Streamlabs Desktop
Operating systems listed by the vendor Windows, macOS and Linux. The current download page lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer, as well as Linux distribution options. Check the page for current details: OBS downloads. Windows and macOS. Its requirements page lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ as minimums and recommends Windows 10 or macOS 13+ for its recommended setup. Check current details: Streamlabs system requirements.
Getting started Offers configuration options and an Auto-Configuration Wizard; you can assemble and configure your recording setup. Setup includes a recording-only choice, account sign-in and an option to import OBS settings.
Audio workflow documented by the vendor Audio mixer, per-source filters such as noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and VST support. The cited material does not establish a matched multitrack comparison. Documents recording microphone and desktop audio to separate tracks, so you can choose which to keep or replace in editing.
Scenes and customization Scenes can combine sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards. OBS also highlights plugin and script support. Its onboarding and included workflow may be preferable if you want more guidance rather than configuring components yourself.
Performance and recording quality No universal advantage established. OBS says demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. No universal advantage established. Streamlabs says content, other running programs and hardware affect the settings needed.

The comparison is about local screen recording: capture your screen, then edit and upload the resulting file to YouTube. Both applications can record; neither has a demonstrated universal edge in output quality or resource use.

Which one should you choose?

Choose OBS Studio if you value flexibility

  • You use Linux, which OBS lists as supported and Streamlabs Desktop does not list on its requirements page.
  • You want to build scenes from a range of sources and adjust audio with per-source filters.
  • You want an open-source tool with plugin and script customization.

OBS describes itself as free and open-source recording and live-streaming software. Its feature set is flexible, but you may need to spend more time configuring scenes and sources to suit your recording.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want guided setup or separate audio tracks

  • You prefer onboarding that explicitly lets you select recording videos rather than going live.
  • You already use OBS and want to try importing your settings.
  • You want microphone and desktop audio recorded to individual tracks for later editing.

These are workflow differences, not proof that one application is easier for every creator or produces a better file. The available vendor descriptions are not controlled, head-to-head tests.

Check your computer and current OS support

OBS’s download page listed version 32.2.2, released August 14; the page information available here does not establish the release year. Its system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so treat that baseline as older guidance and verify the current download and OS requirements before installing. OBS explicitly cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It says CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.

Streamlabs’ requirements page was last updated April 8, 2026. It lists 8 GB RAM minimum and recommends 16 GB or more, along with a recent Intel/AMD CPU and GPU and 512 GB or larger SSD for more demanding use. These are vendor recommendations, not evidence that Streamlabs uses more memory than OBS. Streamlabs says settings depend on content, other programs running and hardware. Recheck its current requirements before downloading.

Set up a reliable YouTube recording

  1. Choose recording, not streaming. In Streamlabs Desktop onboarding, select the recording-only option if you are capturing footage for later upload. In OBS, configure a recording setup with the Auto-Configuration Wizard or the settings you prefer.
  2. Build the scene around what you need to capture. In OBS, add the relevant sources, such as a window capture, screen capture, webcam, text or image. Keep the scene as simple as practical; scene complexity is one factor OBS identifies as affecting CPU needs.
  3. Set resolution and frame rate for the project. Pick the output dimensions and FPS you actually need, then use the same settings in your test as in the intended recording. Higher demands can change performance; neither vendor documentation establishes one best setting for every computer or video.
  4. Check the audio path. Confirm the microphone and desktop sound appear in the mixer and are not muted. In OBS, per-source filters include noise gate, noise suppression and gain. In Streamlabs, enable separate microphone and desktop audio tracks if you want to choose between them during editing.
  5. Make a short test recording. Use the same game or application, scene, microphone, resolution and frame rate planned for the full session. Watch for dropped frames or encoding overload indicators in the chosen app, then play the file back to check audio levels, track separation and sync.
  6. Review the export before a long session. Confirm the captured area, file playback, audio and sync are right before recording an entire documentary segment or commentary session.

Troubleshooting common recording problems

  • Recording stutters or shows encoding overload: the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, other open programs or available hardware may be too demanding. Close unnecessary programs, simplify the scene or reduce output demands, then repeat the same short test.
  • The microphone is missing or too quiet: verify the intended microphone is selected and its mixer source is active; check mute state and gain. Make another short recording and listen back rather than relying only on the live meter.
  • Desktop audio and microphone are hard to edit separately: Streamlabs documents recording these to separate tracks. If using that workflow, enable the tracks and verify the resulting file in your editor before capturing a long session.
  • Audio is out of sync: inspect a test file in the editor or player you will actually use. Check the capture and audio device configuration, adjust only what is needed, and retest before the main recording.
  • The operating system is not listed: OBS lists Linux support; the cited Streamlabs Desktop requirements list Windows and macOS. Check each vendor’s current support information before investing time in setup.

Recording a video is different from keeping a YouTube channel live

OBS and Streamlabs Desktop are recording choices for footage you later upload. If your separate goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider: it loops uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the loop running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. There are no quality tiers up to 4K 60fps: video streams as uploaded. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
