For a musician who wants to perform live on YouTube with an audio interface, mixer, multiple microphones, or more than one camera, OBS Studio is a flexible desktop starting point. Choose Streamlabs if its YouTube widgets and integrated products suit your show; consider Restream Studio for a browser-based production, guests, or simultaneous destinations. There is no documented universal winner—and none of these choices has been established as best for musical audio quality, reliability, or latency.
You may not need streaming software at all: YouTube also supports webcam and mobile workflows. The encoder route is most useful when your performance setup needs computer capture or external audio and video hardware.
Do you need streaming software to perform on YouTube?
YouTube supports three broad live workflows: webcam, mobile, and an encoder. An encoder is the most relevant choice when you need to bring computer visuals into the show, connect external audio or video hardware, or manage multiple sources such as microphones and cameras. YouTube’s guide to choosing a way to live stream describes these options.
If a simple webcam or mobile performance covers your needs, start there rather than adding a production tool to solve a problem you do not have. If you want a mixer or audio interface in the signal path, scene changes, screen capture, or several audio and video sources, an encoder gives you a way to assemble those inputs before sending the stream to YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which software fits your music show?
The choice is mainly about workflow, not a verified ranking of sound quality. The following guidance synthesizes YouTube and vendor documentation; it is not based on hands-on comparative testing.
| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | A desktop production where you want control over sources and scenes. | It is a flexible encoder option, but setup has a learning curve. You will need to configure your video and audio inputs and connect OBS to YouTube. |
| Streamlabs | A YouTube-focused show where its widgets or integrated products match your format. | Streamlabs describes Desktop, OBS Plugin, Mobile, Console, and Talk Studio options, and YouTube widgets such as alerts for Super Chats and memberships. Availability and features vary across products and plans; check the current offering before choosing. |
| Restream Studio | A browser-based production, especially one involving guests or destinations beyond YouTube. | Restream describes browser streaming and multistreaming, and YouTube lists Restream among verified encoders. Platform counts and plan limits can change, so confirm current terms if they affect your decision. |
| PRISM Live Studio | A creator who prioritizes production effects such as overlays or virtual backgrounds. | YouTube’s encoder guidance describes a Windows option with effects, overlays, virtual background, and virtual camera features. This is an alternative based on those production needs, not a music-specific recommendation. |
For these desktop or browser production tools, check that the chosen workflow supports your operating system and the audio and video sources you plan to use. Compare how you will switch scenes and manage sources, whether guests or multiple destinations matter, and which capabilities require a paid plan. Available documentation does not establish which application sounds better or performs more reliably for musicians.

Plan the audio path before the video production
The encoder has to receive the sound you intend to broadcast as well as the picture. A typical more involved setup sends microphones or instruments through an audio interface or mixer and then into the computer. YouTube notes that an encoder can use external audio hardware and that advanced productions may use multiple microphones and a mixer. The right routing depends on your equipment; this comparison does not establish a best interface or mixer.
- Identify the exact source that should reach the audience: a microphone, an instrument, a mixer output, or a combination.
- Connect that source to the interface or mixer and the selected computer input. Then select the corresponding input in your streaming software.
- Listen to the encoder’s actual output while playing and singing. Check that the intended sources are present and that the resulting balance is suitable before going live.
- If the performance includes movement or changes in instrumentation, include those in the test rather than checking only a quiet, stationary opening.
Set up the encoder and YouTube connection
- Choose the encoder workflow. Install or open the software you selected and build the scene or browser production around the sources your show needs. For an audio-interface setup, make sure the software is listening to the interface input you intend to use.
- Open the YouTube live setup. Follow YouTube’s live setup for an encoder to obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes entering these into the encoder; account-integrated tools may connect differently.
- Enter the connection details. In the encoder’s YouTube or streaming settings, use YouTube’s server URL and stream key as directed by the software. Treat the key as a credential: do not show or share it publicly.
- Choose settings using YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant-bitrate encoding, lists AAC or MP3 audio, and publishes video bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Its current settings page recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, or 14 Mbps using H.264; for 1080p at 60 fps, it recommends 12 Mbps using AV1 or H.265, or 17 Mbps using H.264. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees for a particular computer or internet connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current details.
- Test before the performance. YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the YouTube stream preview and stream health, and confirm that the selected quality is reliable on your available upload connection. Monitor stream health while live as well.
Use the settings page rather than assuming a single bitrate will suit every connection or production. The cited recommendations do not predict performance on your specific network.

Account for music rights and YouTube rules
Streaming software does not grant rights to music in your broadcast. Before performing, check that you have permission for any compositions, recordings, backing tracks, or other material you use. A song’s availability elsewhere does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current encoder and live-streaming guidance and applicable copyright rules for your content and account.
For a set built from recordings or other reused material, consider whether you have the rights to use it and whether the channel’s content meets YouTube’s current monetization policies. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions; meeting one does not guarantee the other. Policy details can change, so consult YouTube’s official copyright and monetization guidance before relying on a particular format.
