Freida Parton asked fans to pray for her sister Dolly in October 2025, then clarified that she had not meant to suggest a severe crisis. Dolly Parton’s own video at the time said she was receiving treatment near home. The story’s current framing has since changed: the Associated Press reported on October 2, 2026, that Parton died on August 25, 2026, with cancer as the cause. AP’s report concerned a later estate dispute; the details should be attributed to AP, because no primary family or estate confirmation is established here.
What Freida Parton said in October 2025
After Dolly Parton announced in late September 2025 that she was postponing her Las Vegas concerts because doctors had said she needed procedures, her sister Freida posted on October 7: “Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly.” The concert announcement did not specify what the procedures were.
Freida followed up the same day to clarify the tone of her request: “She’s been a little under the weather, and I simply asked for prayers because I believe so strongly in the power of prayer.” She said she had not meant to scare people or make the situation sound so serious.
How Dolly Parton described her health then
In a video posted October 8, 2025, Parton said she was okay and that people thought she was sicker than she was. She explained that, while her husband Carl Dean was ill and after his death, she had let some of her own health matters go. She said she was receiving treatment close to home near Vanderbilt. Those were her statements at that time, not a description of her status in 2026.

Parton also joked, “Do I look sick to you?” and said, “I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me. And I ain’t done working.” These remarks were part of her October 2025 video; they should not be read as a current update.
What was reported about kidney stones
ABC News reported, citing a source close to the situation, that Parton had been dealing with kidney stones. Her sister Stella Parton also said Dolly had kidney stones and was receiving treatment, while asking people to respect her privacy. The detail belongs to contemporaneous reporting and statements from 2025, not a new diagnosis.

What later reporting changed
In May 2026, AP reported that Parton had canceled her previously postponed Las Vegas residency and described her conditions as treatable. In a video cited in that report, Parton said she was responding well to medication and treatments and improving. That report is historical, too.
On October 2, 2026, AP reported that Parton had died on August 25, 2026, and identified cancer as the cause. The AP story concerned a court dispute involving her estate and nephew. The death date and cause should therefore be presented as AP’s reporting; a primary family or estate statement independently confirming those details is not established here.

How to understand the prayer request
Freida’s October 2025 post was a request for prayer during a period when Dolly had postponed concerts and was receiving treatment. Freida promptly clarified that she had not intended to suggest a severe crisis. Nothing in the post establishes that she knew what would happen later, and it should not be treated as a prediction or explanation of the subsequent AP report.
