Those problems look similar on screen but need different fixes. Check OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing bitrate or video settings.
Identify what is dropping frames
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while streaming or running a private test. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream-health warnings, too. OBS separates connection-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag; treating them as one problem can lead you to lower quality without fixing the cause.

For connection drops specifically, OBS describes the symptom this way: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, is referring to network delivery—not every kind of stutter.
Compare the encoded stream with a local recording
YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder, reviewing errors and CPU load, and inspecting a local archive where available. If the local recording itself has poor video or audio, investigate sources, rendering and encoding. If it looks and sounds healthy but the live delivery is not, focus on the outbound connection and ingest path. Update encoder software and check the quality of the audio and video sources routed through it.

Fix connection-dropped frames
Connection drops mean OBS is struggling to deliver the configured stream bitrate reliably to YouTube. A speed test is useful, but one peak upload result does not prove that the connection can sustain a stream over time. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Include the combined bitrate of a primary and backup stream if you use both.
- Check sustained upload capacity. Run more than one upload test at different times if the issue comes and goes. Compare the stable results—not just the best one—with your stream’s total bitrate.
- Lower video bitrate if needed. Reduce it in the encoder until the connection remains stable. OBS’s guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a YouTube rule or guaranteed threshold. Use YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation and your observed stability to choose a sustainable setting.
- Prefer wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection when feasible because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If the issue began after changing networks or equipment, test the wired path separately.
- Check software and drivers. Temporarily investigate whether a VPN or security software interferes with the connection. Check for network-prioritization utilities that may deprioritize OBS; OBS cites Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not an exhaustive list. Update network drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer if they are outdated.
- Isolate the network path. Restart the modem and router as a diagnostic step. If drops continue, test cables and network devices methodically, then contact your ISP if the fault may be outside your home. Possible failure points include the modem, router, cable, network card, switch or extender. Replace hardware only when testing points to it.
OBS also documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, default IP binding, IPv4-only testing and dynamic bitrate adjustment as options to investigate. Their availability and exact controls can depend on OBS version and operating system, so verify the current controls before changing them. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality; it can help avoid disconnects but does not repair the underlying connection problem.

Fix rendering or encoding lag
Rendering lag means OBS is having trouble composing the scene; encoding lag means it cannot encode the output quickly enough. These are local performance problems, not evidence that your upload route is unstable.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS recommends this as an initial diagnostic for GPU overload.
- Free GPU capacity. Close other GPU-intensive programs. If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, then lower its graphics settings if needed.
- Reduce output demands. Lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not stable, test at 30 fps and check whether the counters improve.
- Simplify the scene. Reduce demanding browser sources and filters, use appropriately sized source files instead of unnecessarily large media, and keep scene collections focused.
- Retest with the same content. Use similar motion and audio to the planned stream and see whether OBS statistics and the local recording improve.
These steps target the computer’s rendering and encoding workload. They will not fix an unstable upload route, so return to the connection checks if OBS instead reports connection drops.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for reliable delivery
There is no single bitrate that suits every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary with resolution and frame rate. Choose a target from YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than applying one number to every setup. Then confirm that the resulting total bitrate fits within reliable upload capacity with headroom.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: Use a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Encoder format: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps; choose one your system and connection can sustain.
- Resolution and bitrate: Select the relevant row in YouTube’s current recommendations for your intended resolution and frame rate, then test it under realistic load.
Because YouTube’s help pages do not show publication dates for these settings, check the current YouTube Live encoder settings before an important stream.

Test before going live and distinguish viewer buffering
Run a representative test before an event: include movement and audio like the planned stream, check the encoder output, and watch YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages. Keep OBS statistics visible so you can see which counter changes when a problem occurs.
A viewer’s buffering report does not automatically mean the broadcaster is dropping frames. YouTube notes that one viewer may have a device or connection problem; reports from many viewers on different connections can point to an encoder issue. If affected viewers are on one shared network, that network may be the common factor. OBS also explains that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames, because playback depends on each viewer’s network and device. Confirm the symptom yourself and ask which devices and connections are affected before changing stream settings.
