How to Stream Multiple Audio Sources on YouTube

Combine multiple audio sources before they reach YouTube: route them through a streaming encoder or mixer, test the balance in preview, and monitor the broadcast.

To stream multiple audio sources on YouTube, combine them before they reach YouTube: use a computer streaming encoder to capture and balance the inputs, or route them through an audio mixer or interface first. YouTube’s Live Control Room is for setting up and monitoring a broadcast; it does not, by itself, mix arbitrary microphones, computer audio, or remote callers. Preview the combined sound before going live and monitor it throughout the stream.

Choose how to combine the sources

Start by listing what viewers need to hear. Common examples include a speaking microphone, computer or game audio, playback you have permission to use, and a remote guest returned through conferencing software. These can be separate physical devices or audio feeds handled by software. Which ones you can route independently depends on your operating system, encoder, and connected equipment.

Approach Best suited to What to check
Encoder captures the inputs A modest setup, such as a microphone plus computer audio, when the computer and encoder can access both. Confirm that the encoder and operating system can select or route each intended source. Controls differ across applications and systems.
Mixer or audio interface feeds the encoder Several microphones, line-level sources, or a production that needs direct, independent level controls. Check source connections, the device’s output to the computer, and how the encoder receives that output. YouTube names mixers and multiple microphones as examples for advanced productions; it does not require a mixer for every stream.

YouTube distinguishes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming, and describes encoders for creators using external audio hardware or producing more advanced broadcasts. A webcam or phone may suit a simple stream, but do not assume it can independently route every input you need. Begin with equipment you already have; add a mixer or interface only if it solves a specific input or control problem. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.

Set up and balance the audio before going live

  1. Connect or route each source. Plug physical sources into their intended inputs, or use the audio-routing controls supported by your computer and encoder for software feeds. Do not assume every encoder has a control with a particular name, such as “desktop audio.”
  2. Select the intended inputs in the encoder. Verify that each source you want viewers to hear is included, and that unwanted inputs are not. The exact menu path depends on the encoder and operating system; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify universal device-by-device menus.
  3. Set relative levels by listening. Make speech intelligible, keep playback and computer sound from overpowering it, and check for clipping, hum, or an unexpectedly quiet source. There is no universal gain value for this mix: source output and equipment differ.
  4. Make a test recording or use a private or unlisted preview. Listen to the result on a separate device if possible. Check that every intended source is present, at a useful level, and not doubled or distorted.
  5. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview before starting the public broadcast. YouTube recommends checking the preview before streaming and continuously monitoring audio and video quality during the event.

If a source is missing, check its connection, selected input, mute state, and whether the encoder is receiving the device or software feed you intended. If levels change when a call or application opens, check that application’s audio routing as well as the encoder mix.

Check bandwidth and keep the stream key secure

YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused above the total stream bitrate. In YouTube’s wording, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” This is headroom guidance, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast. Check the bitrate of the whole stream against the upload capacity available to you, rather than considering audio in isolation.

Your encoder uses the stream key to send the feed to YouTube. Treat it as private access information. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key before streaming again.

Use HLS audio settings only for an HLS stream

YouTube’s HLS recommendations are protocol-specific, not settings every creator should change. For HLS ingestion, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, and lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as supported audio codecs. OBS is among the encoders YouTube names as supporting HLS output. Follow the current HLS preset and settings for your selected encoder.

Combining several microphones or software feeds into a stereo mix is different from sending surround sound. YouTube’s 5.1 guidance supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 layouts; other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. Use a supported layout rather than assuming that more channels will preserve your mix.

Prevent copyright and content problems

Only include music, clips, and other playback audio that you have the rights or permissions to use in a YouTube livestream. Having access to a track for personal listening does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. If you are unsure about a source, leave it out until you have confirmed the applicable rights. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies for your channel and content; audio mixing does not change those obligations.

Troubleshoot common audio failures

What you hear Likely checks and fixes
One source is missing Check the physical connection or software route, the input selected in the encoder, and mute settings on the source and mixer/interface. Confirm the source reaches the computer before starting the broadcast.
Speech is buried under computer or playback audio Lower the competing source or raise the speech source carefully, then listen to another test. Balance by monitoring the combined output rather than judging each source in isolation.
Audio is distorted or unexpectedly loud Reduce the source or input level and inspect each stage in the chain for clipping. Test again before going live.
The mix sounds doubled or echoing Check whether the same audio is reaching the encoder through more than one route, or whether monitoring playback is being captured again. Disable the duplicate route and test.
The stream is unstable Check total stream bitrate against available upload bandwidth and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. This is a recommendation, not a service guarantee.
The encoder no longer reaches the channel Check that it has the current stream key. If the key may have been compromised, have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for a different job: it keeps uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream. It does not mix live microphone, computer, or guest audio, and it does not stream from a camera. If your goal is a continuous channel built from prepared recordings, you upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
