For most people who want to produce a live stream with scenes, a webcam, other media and mixed audio, OBS Studio is the best starting point. It is free, open source and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Choose NVIDIA Broadcast for supported Windows PCs when AI camera or microphone effects are the priority; Logitech Capture for a Logitech-focused camera workflow on Windows; or Camo Studio if you want a vendor-described production workflow that can use a phone camera.
Which webcam streaming software should you choose?
| Software | Best fit | Platforms and important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Full stream production: scenes, webcam and other sources, audio mixing, recording, streaming and virtual camera. | Windows, macOS and Linux. Its capabilities are documented by the OBS Project; actual performance depends on the computer and production settings. |
| NVIDIA Broadcast | AI camera or microphone processing, such as virtual backgrounds and effects. | Windows application in the official sources reviewed. Check NVIDIA’s current hardware requirements before installing; it requires supported NVIDIA hardware. |
| Logitech Capture | Logitech camera owners seeking a vendor-focused capture workflow. | Logitech identifies Capture as Windows-only. It can provide a camera source for tools such as OBS or XSplit, but it is narrower than a complete production suite. |
| Camo Studio | People interested in using a phone camera or a more integrated production workflow. | Reincubate’s company page describes Camo Studio 2.9 and native multistreaming and direct streaming to Facebook, Instagram and Kick on Windows. These are vendor-described features, not independently tested here; check current availability and requirements. |
The practical distinction is whether you need a production workspace or one particular camera function. OBS gives you control over how multiple sources appear and sound together. A camera-effects utility or camera vendor’s software can be more focused when you do not need to build a full scene.
Why OBS Studio is the strongest all-purpose starting point
OBS Studio is a production application, not merely a webcam viewer. You can combine webcam video with other sources, arrange them into scenes, mix audio, record and stream. You can also send an OBS scene to compatible video-call or recording applications using its virtual camera. The trade-off is setup: scenes and sources provide flexibility, but you must configure them.
OBS is free and open source, and the OBS Project lists support for Windows, macOS and Linux. That does not mean every computer can stream smoothly at every resolution and frame rate. OBS cautions that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; meeting its basic system requirements is not a guarantee of adequate streaming performance. Use the OBS system requirements for current platform guidance and start with the Auto Configuration Wizard if you are unsure which settings your machine can handle.

Add a webcam in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In the OBS main window, select the scene you want to use, or add one in the Scenes panel. A scene is the layout you will send to your stream or virtual camera.
- Add the camera source. In Sources, select + and choose Video Capture Device. OBS’s FAQ identifies a Video Capture Source as the way to add a webcam. Give the source a clear name, then select the webcam in its device settings.
- Check the camera image and framing. Resize and position the source in the preview. If the camera does not appear, check that another application is not using it and that the operating system has granted OBS camera access.
- Check audio separately. Confirm the intended microphone is active in OBS’s audio mixer and that its meter responds when you speak. A webcam’s built-in microphone may not be the microphone you want on stream.
- Run a short private or unlisted test before going public. Check framing, audio, scene changes and the actual stream output. Do not assume that a preview alone confirms your full streaming setup works.
On Windows, OBS says a camera driver needs to provide DirectShow output for OBS to use it as a Video Capture Device; major webcams and capture cards generally support this. See the OBS Video Capture Sources guide if the device is missing or its controls are unclear.
Use an OBS scene as a webcam in another application
OBS Virtual Camera lets a compatible application receive an OBS scene as a camera feed. OBS Project’s Virtual Camera Guide, dated 2022-08-31, describes sharing an OBS scene with applications that can use a webcam. This is useful when you want to send a composed layout—with titles, images or multiple sources—instead of the raw webcam.

When NVIDIA Broadcast, Logitech Capture or Camo Studio makes more sense
NVIDIA Broadcast: effects on a supported Windows PC
Choose NVIDIA Broadcast when the goal is processing the camera or microphone—for example, applying AI effects or a virtual background—rather than building a complete stream layout. Broadcast creates virtual devices; select the processed camera or microphone inside OBS or the video-call application you use. Confirm that your Windows system and NVIDIA hardware meet NVIDIA’s current requirements on its Broadcast app page. If your hardware is unsupported, this is not the right choice regardless of the desired effect.
Logitech Capture: a Logitech-centered camera workflow
Logitech Capture is worth considering if you own a Logitech camera and want the vendor’s camera workflow or a camera feed to use in OBS or XSplit. Logitech identifies it as Windows-only, so check the current support information for your camera and operating system before relying on it. It is not a substitute for OBS when you need a general scene, audio-mixing and streaming workspace. Logitech’s Capture page provides its product details.

A Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam is one example of a camera that Logitech documents for use with OBS; it is not required for OBS, and it should not be taken as a universal recommendation. See Logitech’s C922 setup guide.
Camo Studio: phone-camera and integrated-production interest
Camo Studio is a candidate if you want to use a phone camera or prefer a more integrated production workflow. Reincubate describes Camo Studio 2.9 as offering native multistreaming and direct streaming to Facebook, Instagram and Kick on Windows. Those details come from the vendor; verify the current version, platform support and feature availability on the Camo page before choosing it.

Compatibility and performance checks before you go live
- Confirm platform support. OBS covers Windows, macOS and Linux in its official documentation. Logitech Capture is identified by Logitech as Windows-only, while NVIDIA Broadcast is a Windows application in the reviewed official sources. Support can change, so verify the current download and requirements for your operating system.
- Check device access. Make sure the operating system allows the software to use the camera and microphone, and that the camera is not already occupied by another application. For OBS on Windows, verify that the camera driver provides DirectShow output.
- Match production ambitions to the computer. A high resolution, high frame rate, complex scenes and demanding encoding settings can all increase CPU needs. OBS does not promise that a machine meeting basic requirements can stream successfully at a particular setting.
- Use a staged test. Start with a simple scene, confirm the camera and audio, then add overlays and other sources one at a time. If performance deteriorates, simplify the scene or adjust settings rather than assuming the webcam software alone is at fault.
Troubleshooting common webcam software problems
OBS does not show the webcam
- Check that the webcam is connected, powered and selected as the device in the Video Capture Device source.
- Close other applications that may be using the camera and confirm OS camera permissions.
- On Windows, confirm the camera driver provides DirectShow output, as required by OBS.
The webcam appears in OBS but not in a call or other app
- Start OBS Virtual Camera, then select OBS Virtual Camera in the receiving application’s camera settings.
- Check whether the receiving application supports the virtual-camera method for your OS version. On macOS, OBS documents the newer component for OBS Studio 30.0 and newer on macOS 13 or newer; for other combinations, use OBS’s current troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the chosen output mode. Selecting Preview in Studio Mode can expose work-in-progress changes.
Video or audio stutters during streaming
- Reduce scene complexity and test again; multiple sources and effects add load.
- Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the chosen encoder, resolution and frame rate on your own computer.
- Check that the correct microphone is selected and that no other app is competing for it.
NVIDIA Broadcast effects or devices are unavailable
Confirm that your PC and NVIDIA hardware meet Broadcast’s current requirements. If they do not, use the webcam’s ordinary device in OBS or another compatible application rather than expecting Broadcast’s virtual devices to work.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream basics
Webcam software handles capture and production; it does not grant rights to material you add to a stream. Before using music, documentary clips, images or other third-party content, make sure you have permission or another valid basis to use them. YouTube may apply its copyright rules to live content. A test stream also does not establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s monetization policies, including rules concerning reused content. Check YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies for the applicable rules.

Every slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included in every plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
