To schedule a YouTube Live playlist with OBS on Windows, create the event in YouTube Studio, build the playlist as an OBS VLC Video source, then connect OBS to the event using its stream URL and key. YouTube handles the scheduled event; OBS plays and sends your local video files as the live feed. The workflow is the same for Indian creators, though account and network conditions can vary.
Before you begin
- Check channel eligibility: YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Enable live streaming early: First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the broadcast setup window. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Install compatible software: OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Prepare local video files: Put the recordings you intend to play on the Windows PC and decide their order. Check that each file opens and has the expected picture and audio.
- Plan for upload bandwidth: YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. Test with representative video movement and audio rather than relying only on a speed-test result. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips and its encoder settings guidance.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, select Manage, then Schedule Stream.
- Choose Create new for a new event or Reuse settings if appropriate. Enter the event details and save.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room. You will use that event’s stream URL and stream key when configuring OBS.
Scheduling the event does not create or select a YouTube playlist for OBS to play. Studio creates the scheduled broadcast; OBS supplies a live encoder feed containing the local media sequence. YouTube describes the scheduling workflow in its encoder instructions.
Build the playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources box, select + and add a VLC Video Source. Give it a recognizable name if prompted.
- In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them played.
- Set Shuffle Playlist according to the intended order. Leave it off to play the files in their listed order; turn it on to randomize playback.
- Set Loop Playlist according to the intended ending. Leave it off to stop after the final file; turn it on to restart the sequence after it ends.
- Check source visibility and the audio track settings. Preview the scene and play through each file, verifying both video and sound before the scheduled broadcast.
OBS documents the VLC Video source and its playlist, shuffle, loop, and other source properties in its Media Sources guide. This source is for files available to the PC; it is not a way to choose a YouTube playlist from Studio.
Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the scheduled event and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the appropriate YouTube connection method shown in your OBS version, then enter the event’s stream URL and key if configuring the connection manually.
- Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s stream settings help.
- In OBS, start the stream to send the encoder feed. Check the event preview in Live Control Room and wait for stream health information before starting the broadcast to viewers.
- Confirm the playlist begins with the intended file and that audio is present. Monitor the event and stream health while it is running.
YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. The total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth, with roughly 20% headroom recommended; consult YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

Choose whether the playlist repeats or shuffles
| Playback goal | OBS setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Play files in the order you added them | Shuffle Playlist off | Files play in listed order. |
| Play in a randomized order | Shuffle Playlist on | OBS randomizes the list rather than preserving its order. |
| Stop after the final file | Loop Playlist off | Playback ends after the list finishes. |
| Repeat continuously | Loop Playlist on | The sequence restarts after the final item. |
Shuffle and loop control different things: shuffle affects order, while loop affects what happens at the end. Their behavior is described in the OBS VLC Video source documentation.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing or will not load: Install VLC and restart OBS. Match the architectures—64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Check OBS’s Media Sources requirements.
- The scheduled event is not available yet: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel. For a first activation, allow up to 24 hours as described by YouTube’s setup guidance.
- OBS is sending to the wrong event or YouTube receives no feed: Reopen the scheduled event and verify that OBS has that event’s stream URL and key, not details from another broadcast. YouTube explains those connection details in its stream settings guidance.
- Playlist order is unexpected: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for listed order, then review the file sequence in the VLC source properties.
- Playback stops at the end: Turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. With looping off, the list stops after its last item.
- Viewers report buffering or the preview shows poor stream health: Check that the total bitrate fits your actual upload capacity, reduce the streaming load if needed, and test again with about 20% bandwidth headroom. Use YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
- Video plays but audio is missing or wrong: Check the VLC source’s audio track and visibility properties, then test the complete scene in OBS before sending it to the scheduled event.
Copyright and channel considerations
Scheduling a stream does not grant rights to the videos or music in the playlist. Use media you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and channel policies before streaming. A playlist made from recordings can also raise questions about originality and reused content when monetization is involved; scheduling or looping a video does not itself establish eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance is the relevant starting point for account access, while rights and monetization decisions depend on the content and channel circumstances.
