To check what you are sending for a 4K 60fps broadcast, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the stream setup, and verify the encoder is configured for 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps with a codec-specific bitrate. YouTube usually detects resolution and frame rate automatically; it does not give creators a menu for choosing YouTube’s downstream transcoding renditions.
What “transcoding” means in YouTube Live
Your encoder sends one incoming video-and-audio feed to YouTube. YouTube processes that feed into multiple playback formats so viewers on different devices and network connections can watch. The creator’s settings determine the incoming signal; they do not select the set of YouTube-generated playback renditions. YouTube describes this automatic process in its live encoder settings guidance.
That distinction matters when checking 4K: confirm the resolution and frame rate configured at the encoder, then use Live Control Room’s stream health and preview to check that YouTube is receiving the expected feed. A setting in your encoder is not, by itself, proof that the outgoing signal is reaching YouTube as intended.
Open Live Control Room and check the stream setup
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Select an existing encoder stream or create one, then open Stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- For the usual setup, leave resolution and frame-rate detection on automatic. YouTube detects these settings by default.
- If you need to specify resolution manually, create a custom stream key. In the stream setup, enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution, then select the resolution you intend to send.
Interface labels and placement can change. YouTube’s current Live Control Room setup guidance describes the encoder workflow and custom-key option.

Configure the encoder for 4K at 60 fps
Set the encoder’s video output to 3840×2160 (2160p) at 60 fps. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support, and use the bitrate guidance for that codec rather than treating all codec recommendations as interchangeable.
| Video codec | YouTube’s 2160p60 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| AV1 | 10–40 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 10–40 Mbps |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
These figures are from YouTube’s English encoder-settings table, accessed October 3, 2026; they are operational recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular viewer experience. The 10–40 Mbps range applies to AV1 and H.265/HEVC in that table, while 35 Mbps is the H.264 recommendation. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate throughout the broadcast, with capacity left for ordinary network variation.

Use compatible transport and encoding settings
- Transport: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure transport.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Scan and pixels: use progressive scan and square pixels.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3.
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not settings that determine which downstream renditions YouTube creates.
Check latency and HDR before choosing a configuration
4K streams do not have YouTube’s low-latency option
YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. If your programme depends on near-real-time audience interaction, factor that limitation into the format decision before going live.

HDR requires a separate production decision
Do not enable HDR merely because the stream is 4K. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; it specifies 10-bit for HDR and 8-bit for SDR. Use HDR only when the source, encoder, and production workflow are deliberately configured for it. The basic 4K60 recommendation does not require HDR.
Test and verify the incoming feed
- Before the event, send a test using representative footage, motion, and audio—not only a static desktop or title card.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room and check that the picture and sound are present and look as expected.
- Review stream health and any warnings or messages while the encoder is sending. Monitor audio and video quality throughout the broadcast.
- If the received signal does not match the intended format, check the encoder’s actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and stream-key configuration before changing YouTube’s automatic detection.
YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the broadcast in its live streaming tips. A representative test helps catch problems that a preset alone cannot reveal.

Common 4K60 setup problems
- Live Control Room does not show the expected resolution or frame rate: confirm the encoder is actually outputting 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps and sending to the intended stream key. Automatic detection is the default; use a custom key and manual Stream Resolution only when manual selection is needed.
- The stream is unstable or health warnings appear: check whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate, and confirm the encoder is using CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four).
- The encoder offers a different bitrate target for another codec: use the matching codec row in YouTube’s table. Do not apply the AV1/H.265 range as though it were the H.264 recommendation.
- Viewers expect very low delay: 4K/2160 does not offer YouTube’s low-latency option. Set expectations around normal latency or reconsider the resolution if low delay is essential.
- HDR looks wrong or is unavailable: verify that the full workflow is configured for HDR and that the codec is appropriate. YouTube’s guidance excludes AV1 for HDR and calls for 10-bit HDR; SDR guidance specifies 8-bit.
