YouTube Live Ultra-Low Latency Settings for an OBS Playlist Stream

Configure YouTube Live ultra-low latency alongside an OBS VLC playlist, with practical guidance on encoder testing, HLS, buffering, 4K, and DVR.

To use YouTube Live’s ultra-low latency with an OBS playlist, select Ultra-low latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under Stream Settings → Stream latency. In OBS, use a VLC Video source for multiple playlist items. The setting can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but it does not guarantee a fixed delay: YouTube says most viewers experience less than five seconds, while warning that buffering is more likely and network ingestion problems have greater impact. Ultra-low latency does not support 4K.

Choose a latency mode that fits the stream

YouTube’s latency setting controls how quickly viewers receive the stream; it does not change when OBS plays or advances playlist items. Lower delay leaves the player less read-ahead buffer to absorb changing internet speeds, so it can increase buffering. Congestion can delay a stream even when a connection supports its average bitrate.

Mode Best fit YouTube’s typical latency description Trade-offs and limits
Normal Non-interactive streams No typical seconds figure stated Lowest buffering; all resolutions and live features supported.
Low Limited audience interaction Most viewers under 10 seconds More buffering than normal may occur; 4K is unsupported.
Ultra-low Real-time audience conversation Most viewers under five seconds Higher likelihood of buffering and greater sensitivity to network ingestion problems; 4K is unsupported.

These are YouTube’s descriptions, not a delay guarantee for a particular encoder, viewer, device, or network. See YouTube’s live streaming latency guidance.

Set up the YouTube stream and OBS playlist

  1. Set YouTube’s latency mode. In YouTube Studio, create or open your stream in Live Control Room. Open Stream or Manage, then Stream Settings. Under Stream latency, select Ultra-low latency. Interface labels may vary slightly. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers the available controls.
  2. Build the playlist in OBS. Add a VLC Video source and configure its media items. OBS distinguishes this from the standard Media Source, which plays a single file. VLC Video supports a playlist, with options including Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist, and behavior when the source is not visible. VLC must be installed; for 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for platform and source details.
  3. Check visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart when visible. If the program changes scenes, check this option so the playlist behaves as intended. Playlist playback and YouTube delivery latency are separate parts of the setup.
  4. Choose encoder settings for a reliable upload. Set resolution and bitrate to suit your connection, and check upload capacity with a speed test. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before going live; its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide lists its encoding guidance. Ultra-low latency cannot be used for 4K, so choose a supported resolution if you need that mode.
  5. Use a compatible ingestion path. YouTube turns off the Ultra-low latency choice when HLS is selected. HLS uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. HLS setup specifies segment durations of 1–4 seconds, but that does not restore the Ultra-low latency option. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
  6. Test and monitor the complete scene. Start a test with the same playlist, audio, movement, encoder configuration, and connection you intend to use. While live, monitor stream health and review YouTube’s messages. If health problems appear, reducing bitrate or choosing a less aggressive latency mode may help; neither is a guaranteed fix.

Understand buffering, 4K, and DVR limits

Ultra-low latency is a trade-off, not a guaranteed delay

YouTube says most viewers of an ultra-low-latency stream experience less than five seconds of latency. Actual delay varies with ingest conditions, the viewer’s network and device, and playback buffering. OBS playlist settings, scene transitions, and cache values do not establish a specific end-to-end delay.

4K requires a different latency choice

YouTube states that low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K; its encoder guidance identifies 4K/2160p as optimized for normal latency. If 4K matters more than real-time interaction, choose normal latency instead.

DVR controls viewer seeking, not latency

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. Disabling it prevents seeking back during the live event, though a recording can still be watched when available. You can change DVR while live; changes apply to viewers who start playing after the change. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable; Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower limits. YouTube documents these controls in its DVR guidance. The documentation does not identify disabling DVR as a way to reduce end-to-end latency.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Ultra-low latency is unavailable: Check whether the stream uses HLS. YouTube disables the option for HLS; use a compatible ingestion path if ultra-low latency is required.
  • The stream buffers or stream health shows problems: Ultra-low mode is more sensitive to ingestion issues. Check upload capacity and stream health; try reducing bitrate or moving to low or normal latency if instability continues.
  • There is no VLC Video source in OBS: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen or check OBS’s source options.
  • The playlist stops or restarts during a scene change: Check VLC Video’s visibility behavior. Its documented default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible.
  • The stream is 4K but ultra-low latency cannot be selected: This is a YouTube limitation, not an OBS playlist fault. Use a supported resolution for ultra-low latency or select normal latency for 4K.
