How to Display the Current Sermon Title on a Church’s Always-On YouTube Stream

A YouTube broadcast title and an on-video sermon overlay are separate. Here’s how to update either—or both—for a church’s always-on stream.

To show a current sermon title, update the YouTube broadcast title in Live Control Room and, if viewers should see the words over the picture, add a separate title overlay in OBS. These are two different jobs: changing YouTube metadata does not put text in the video, and an OBS overlay does not automatically change the watch-page title.

Choose where the sermon title should appear

What viewers see How to update it When to use it
YouTube watch-page title and related YouTube surfaces Edit the broadcast metadata in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room Use this for the searchable or shareable title associated with the broadcast.
Text over the video picture Add a text or browser source to the active OBS scene Use this when viewers should be able to read the sermon title while watching, including when the video is full-screen.

Many churches will want both. Update each separately and check each in its own preview.

Update the title on YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Select the correct scheduled or current broadcast.
  3. Open the broadcast’s stream settings or metadata controls, edit its title, and save. YouTube’s documented workflow allows stream metadata to be edited during setup, from stream settings, or while scheduling; interface labels can change.
  4. Include the sermon title and any recurring service identification viewers need. Confirm the updated title on the selected broadcast or its watch-page preview before the service.

If you create a new broadcast by reusing a previous stream, inspect its title before going live. YouTube says reuse copies metadata, settings, and the stream key, though the new stream can be edited after creation. Treat the stream key as sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in a public document, graphic, or overlay. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Put the sermon title over the video in OBS

Quick method: edit a text source before the service

  1. In OBS, open the scene used for the church broadcast.
  2. Add a text source, enter the sermon title, and position it in the intended title or lower-third area.
  3. Check the text’s size, contrast, spelling, and placement in the OBS preview. Keep it readable at phone size and clear of important picture content and platform controls.

Weekly method: read the title from a text file

  1. In the OBS text source properties, enable the option to read text from a file.
  2. Choose a plain text file that the service operator can access.
  3. Before the service, replace the file’s contents with the current sermon title and confirm the new text appears in the active scene.

OBS documents text sources as a way to render simple text in a stream or recording layout, including text read from a file. This keeps the update to editing a small text file rather than navigating source properties each week. Assign responsibility for that file so an outdated title is not left in the scene. OBS: Text Sources; OBS: Sources Guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Designed method: use a browser source

Add an OBS browser source that loads a local HTML graphic or a URL, then place it in the broadcast scene. This supports a designed title graphic, but someone must maintain the page or file and update its sermon title. Check that the source loads and displays correctly in the scene before the stream. OBS: Browser Source.

Automate YouTube’s watch-page title with the API

A developer-maintained integration can call YouTube Live Streaming API’s liveBroadcasts.update operation and set snippet.title. This requires OAuth authorization and the correct live broadcast. The API documentation warns that writable properties omitted from the submitted broadcast resource can be deleted, so an integration must preserve required and current fields rather than sending an improvised partial update.

This changes broadcast metadata; it does not render a title over the encoded video. Keep an OBS text or browser source (or another graphics system) for the on-video title. Review the current API requirements before implementing an integration. Google for Developers: LiveBroadcasts: update.

Adapt the workflow to an always-on channel

“Always-on” can mean a continuously running broadcast or a channel that schedules a separate live broadcast for each service. The documented Live Control Room workflow does not establish one universal procedure for every channel setup. First identify whether Sunday’s service is a scheduled broadcast or part of an already-live broadcast, then confirm that the signed-in account has permission to edit it.

  • For an already-live broadcast, confirm you have selected the live broadcast itself before changing metadata; update the OBS overlay separately if the title should appear in the video.
  • For a reused setup, check copied metadata before going live, including the title and the stream key’s destination and handling.

If the encoder connection uses RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports it. YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips; YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings; YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Service-day checks

  • The correct scheduled or current broadcast is selected in Live Control Room.
  • The YouTube title matches the current sermon.
  • If using an overlay, the current title is visible in the active OBS scene, with spelling, contrast, and placement checked.
  • The Live Control Room preview and OBS preview show the expected picture and title before the service begins.
  • Monitor the stream’s audio and video during the event; YouTube’s streaming tips recommend previewing in Live Control Room and monitoring quality.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
The watch page has the new title, but no title appears over the picture. Only YouTube metadata was changed. Add or update a text or browser source in the active OBS scene.
The OBS overlay is current, but YouTube shows the old title. The broadcast metadata was not updated, or the wrong broadcast was selected. Return to Live Control Room, select the service’s actual broadcast, and edit its title.
The overlay still shows last week’s sermon. The text source or its linked file was not updated, or the wrong OBS scene is live. Update the source or file and verify the active scene in the preview.
A reused stream has unexpected information or destination settings. Reuse copied metadata, settings, and the stream key from the prior stream. Review and edit the new broadcast before starting it; verify the stream key securely in the encoder setup.
An API title update removes or changes other broadcast fields. The update request omitted writable properties. Have the integration preserve required/current fields in the broadcast resource and follow the API’s current update guidance.
The browser-source graphic is blank or stale. The local file or URL is unavailable, or its maintained title was not changed. Check the source location and update the graphic, then verify it in OBS before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church’s service includes uploaded videos and you want a YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. A sermon title shown as an OBS overlay is a separate graphics task, and a running StreamNeo stream does not make that overlay or update YouTube metadata for you.
