Is a mini PC the right choice for a 24/7 retail promo?
It depends on what you are streaming. A prerecorded promo loop has different demands from a live camera feed or a production with multiple video layers, animated graphics and scene changes. Choose YouTube settings for the promo and connection
YouTube’s live encoder guidance reviewed on October 3, 2026 recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose settings your entire setup can sustain, and test the actual upload connection rather than treating YouTube’s recommended bitrate as proof that an ISP plan will be stable. Set up and validate a local mini-PC stream
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours.
- Keep the key private. Enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Do not show the key in screenshots, promotional material or public documentation; anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
- Set the encoder. Select RTMPS where available, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the resolution, frame rate and codec to match the promo, hardware and tested upload capacity; use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a starting point.
- Test the real workload. Run the intended loop or production with its representative motion and audio over the connection you will use. Watch YouTube stream health and the encoder’s dropped-frame or connection indicators, and check the output on the viewing device used in the store.
- Test recovery and the installation. Before depending on the stream, check how the encoder and PC behave after a restart and what happens after a network interruption. Observe temperatures and fan noise in the intended location during an extended run. A short successful test is useful, but does not prove uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
For a local installation, a UPS sized for the mini PC and router or modem can reduce interruptions from short power events. Size it for the actual load and required runtime; it does not solve a prolonged outage or a failed internet connection.
