The sketch lampooned the presentation and the anecdote’s chronology; it did not make the underlying abuse fictional.
What happens in the SNL cold open?
In the official clip, published March 9, 2024, Johansson plays Alabama senator Katie Britt and Mikey Day plays President Biden. Johansson begins in character: “Tonight, I will be auditioning for the part of scary mom.” The official SNL clip points viewers to Peacock for streaming, but that listing does not establish where the full episode is currently available in every territory.
The sketch amplifies the unusual contrast in Britt’s March 7 Republican response: she speaks about serious national issues from a domestic kitchen setting, with maternal warmth that gives way to a disturbing account of sexual trafficking. The parody pushes that shift into horror-comedy. The Washington Post noted jokes about the kitchen décor and Britt’s bejeweled cross necklaces.
Why did SNL mock the trafficking anecdote?
The joke focused on the anecdote’s framing, especially its time and place, as Britt used it while criticizing Biden’s border policy. In the sketch, Johansson’s character says: “And, rest assured, every detail about it is real, except the year where it took place and who was president when it happened.” That is parody dialogue spoken by Johansson as Britt—not a quotation from the senator.

CNN reported that the account matched the story of Karla Jacinto Romero, who described abuse in Mexico in the mid-2000s. CNN placed the events before Biden’s presidency and outside the United States. It also reported that Romero met Britt during a 2023 trip to Texas. Britt’s office did not confirm or deny that Romero was the person Britt meant; the office said the story was correct. CNN’s account of the story and its context preserves that distinction.
The factual correction concerns chronology and location, not whether trafficking or Romero’s abuse was real. CNN cautioned that clarifying the context should not minimize the seriousness of trafficking. The sketch’s punchline works by making the mismatch conspicuous; it is not evidence that the survivor’s experience was invented.

What was SNL satirizing about Britt’s delivery?
Britt delivered the Republican response from her kitchen, using a direct-to-camera, family-centered style. SNL turned that visual choice and her maternal rhetoric into an exaggerated “scary mom” performance: a seemingly reassuring domestic address that suddenly takes on the tone of a horror film. The comedy depends on the gap between the cozy setting and the intensity of the speech’s subject matter.
That is a reading of the sketch’s satirical target, not a claim that Britt intended to frighten viewers. The Washington Post’s March 10, 2024 account describes the kitchen and necklace jokes, while CNN’s March 10 transcript records Johansson’s “scary mom” line.

How did Katie Britt respond to Johansson’s portrayal?
In an ABC News report published March 13, 2024, Britt said she was “pretty pumped” that Johansson played her and called the incident “a pretty fun moment.” She also said criticism centered on putting too much passion into issues she cared about. Her reaction came after the initial public criticism of the rebuttal’s delivery and the way the trafficking anecdote was presented.
