Neither Mumbai nor Chennai is universally the better VPS location for a 24/7 YouTube stream. City labels do not tell you how a provider routes traffic to YouTube’s ingest server, or whether its plan can sustain your bitrate without packet loss or interruption. Choose by testing the exact VPS plan and region you would use, then compare stream stability, operating cost and support—not geography alone.
Which VPS location is better for YouTube streaming, Mumbai or Chennai?
There is no published controlled comparison establishing that a VPS in Mumbai or Chennai has lower latency, less packet loss or better uptime to YouTube ingest. The result can vary by provider, plan and network route. A nearby city may be a useful starting point, but it is not proof of a better streaming path.
First confirm that the precise VPS product and plan is actually available in the location shown in its region selector. Provider-wide India coverage, cloud edge locations and connectivity facilities do not necessarily mean that VPS compute is offered in both cities.
- Amazon Lightsail documents an Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region. AWS’s general guidance is to create resources closer to their users to reduce latency and improve performance; that does not demonstrate a superior route from Mumbai to YouTube ingest compared with a Chennai VPS from another provider. What to compare on the actual VPS
Compare candidate instances under the conditions in which your 24/7 stream will run. Record the provider, exact plan, operating system, selected region, network allocation or limits, and any bandwidth or egress terms. Then check the route to the YouTube ingest destination you will actually use.

How much upload bandwidth do I need for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Start with the encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then confirm the VPS can sustain it continuously. YouTube’s current help documentation gives these H.264 examples:

These are YouTube’s encoder video-bitrate figures, not a guarantee that a VPS plan can deliver them reliably. Allow for audio and transport overhead, and test sustained throughput under load rather than relying on a single speed-test result. Use YouTube-compatible contribution settings
For the contribution stream from your VPS to YouTube, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube supports streams up to 60 fps. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers. The VPS-location decision therefore concerns the contribution path to YouTube, not the location from which each viewer receives playback.

- Verify the candidate regions. In each provider’s current console or product page, confirm the region available for the precise VPS service and plan. Do not infer compute availability from a company’s city presence or edge locations.
- Make the test comparable. Record provider, plan, operating system, region and network limits. Where possible, compare plans with similar resources and terms so that a plan difference is not mistaken for a city effect.
- Check the ingest path. Configure the intended YouTube stream destination and measure route, round-trip time and packet loss repeatedly. Repeat at different times rather than drawing a conclusion from a single reading.
- Run the intended stream settings. Use YouTube-compatible settings and the bitrate for the intended resolution and frame rate. Test sustained upload under encoder load, then observe bitrate stability, dropped frames, reconnects and YouTube stream health.
- Compare operational fit. Consider recurring cost, bandwidth or egress limits, support and recovery provisions alongside the measured behavior. Keep results tied to the provider, plan, route and test period; they do not establish that one city is universally faster.
- Choose on repeatable results. If the results are close or inconsistent, prefer the plan with terms and support that better fit continuous operation rather than paying extra based on the city name alone.
