Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First identify where the skipping happens: OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter, OBS rendering or encoding performance, viewer playback, or the video source itself. Each points to a different fix. Check OBS’s View > Stats window while the problem occurs, and note whether the issue starts immediately or only after the stream has been running for a while.
Identify what is skipping before changing settings
“Skipping” can describe several different problems. Watch the OBS preview and statistics, check YouTube’s stream health, and—if possible—ask whether multiple viewers see the same thing. Record which counter changes and whether the media source visibly jumps, freezes, or reaches the end.
| What you observe | Likely troubleshooting path |
|---|---|
| OBS’s dropped-frames counter increases | Network connection, ingest server, or bitrate |
| Rendering lag or encoding lag appears in OBS Stats or logs | GPU load, scene complexity, or output settings |
| OBS looks healthy, but viewers report buffering | Viewer device, location, network, or stream bitrate |
| The source video itself jumps, freezes, or stops looping | Media-source or playlist behavior; inspect its settings and logs |
Do not assume that a source-loop fault is the same as dropped frames. The specific media-source type and its restart or loop configuration matter, and the symptom alone does not establish a cause.
If OBS is dropping network frames
OBS describes network-dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many drops can disconnect the stream. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends working through connection stability and bitrate rather than treating this as a rendering problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
- Check that your upload connection is stable during the stream. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for a stream bitrate, not a guaranteed safe value for every connection or platform.
- Set a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently. A speed test is only a snapshot; leave headroom for other devices and changes in network conditions.
- If available for your service, try a different ingest server as a diagnostic.
- OBS has a dynamic bitrate option that can lower bitrate during congestion. It may help avoid a disconnect, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality.
Check the local network path
- Use wired Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming”. A wired connection is a sensible test for network drops, but will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, firewall or security application, or network-optimization utility is interfering with the connection.
- Check for outdated network drivers. On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report help; it also suggests checking Bind to IP. If needed, test IPv4-only, then return to IPv4/IPv6 if it makes no improvement.
- If the problem persists after local checks, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved.
If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag
Rendering and encoding lag call for a performance check, not a network-only fix. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; complex scenes, demanding sources, filters, or other GPU workloads can leave too little capacity for a stable stream. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide (dated 2021) notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible.
- Open OBS Stats: use View > Stats and confirm whether rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped network frames is increasing. Use the counter that matches the symptom to choose the next test.
- Reduce GPU work: close known unnecessary GPU-heavy applications, simplify scenes and scene collections, and remove or reduce costly sources and filters that are not needed for the study stream.
- Match source demands to output: use media or capture sources at a resolution appropriate for the stream output rather than asking OBS to handle unnecessary detail.
- Test a lower output load: in Settings > Video, try a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. This is a diagnostic adjustment, not a universal ideal; compare the result with the stream’s needs.
- On Windows, test administrator mode: OBS suggests running it as administrator as a possible quick fix for GPU-overload issues. Treat it as a test, not a guaranteed cure.
Change one thing at a time and observe the relevant Stats counter. That makes it easier to tell whether a change reduced the actual performance symptom.

Check YouTube encoder settings before the next stream
YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Select a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no one correct bitrate for every study stream.
The following are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended bitrates for selected 1080p settings. The page showed no publication date, and the values are not a diagnosis or a stream-specific recommendation: choose the row matching your encoder and frame rate.

| Codec and output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Do not choose a higher bitrate merely because it appears in YouTube’s table: your connection still needs to sustain it, and viewers may have different playback capacity.
If only viewers report buffering
If OBS shows no dropped frames and no rendering or encoding lag, investigate playback separately. A viewer’s location, device, or network can affect playback even while the encoder is sending a healthy stream. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers across devices and networks, but an individual viewer can still face local playback constraints.

If reports come from viewers in several locations or on different connections, consider whether your bitrate is appropriate for broad accessibility while remaining within YouTube’s recommendations. Ask affected viewers to try another device or network; do not use one viewer’s buffering report as proof that OBS is dropping frames.

- Note the source type and the exact point where playback fails.
- Check the OBS log around that time and record which Stats counter, if any, changes.
- Test whether the same file plays through its end outside OBS, then compare behavior in a simple OBS scene.
There is no single source-specific fix without knowing the source type, its settings, and the relevant log. These observations help distinguish a media-source fault from network or rendering trouble.
