The finale never shows Tony Soprano being killed, so his death is not literally confirmed on screen. The final cut to black, the tension at Holsten’s, and David Chase’s comments about having considered Tony’s death make that interpretation compelling—but the aired scene leaves the outcome unseen.
What happens in the final scene?
In “Made in America,” Tony sits in Holsten’s diner with Carmela and A.J. Meadow is outside, trying to park. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” plays while the family waits. Meadow enters, the door bell rings, Tony looks up—and the picture cuts abruptly to black. The episode does not show a gunshot, Tony’s body, or what happens next. CBS News’ account of Chase’s 2015 comments describes the scene and his thinking behind it.
The sequence builds unease around a man who passes Tony and heads toward the bathroom. Chase said that detail evoked the famous bathroom sequence in The Godfather. It is a suggestive echo, not an image of Tony being shot. Chase also said the song’s opening lyrics carried associations: “Just a small town girl” suggested Carmela, while “living in a lonely world” suggested Tony’s separation between his criminal world and his biological family. Does the cut to black mean Tony dies?
The death reading fits the finale’s suspense: Tony looks up just before the image disappears, and the bathroom detail invites viewers to imagine a threat approaching. Chase also said Tony faced the risk of being shot by a rival because of the life he chose. But the cut itself does not establish what happens; it withholds the next moment rather than depicting it.

Chase described the feeling he wanted as “Don’t stop believing,” calling it “very simple and much more on the nose than people think.” He also said, “All I know is the end is coming for all of us.” Those remarks support the scene’s mortality and uncertainty, but they do not amount to a literal confirmation that Tony dies in that diner. What did David Chase say about Tony’s fate?
Chase’s comments have been reported in ways that can sound more definitive than they are. In 2014, his representative, Leslee Dart, corrected the claim that Chase had said Tony was not dead: “To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate.” Dart added that “Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.” That correction does not confirm either outcome. Chase also discussed an earlier, abandoned idea for a death scene. In that version, Tony would drive toward a meeting with Johnny Sack in Manhattan, and the sequence would cut to black before he arrived. Chase said they did not film that plan. Later reporting describes a revised thought of Tony being killed in a small restaurant, but this is not the same as showing a killing in the broadcast finale. In 2007, Chase pushed back against treating the ending as a code to crack: “There are no esoteric clues in there. No ‘Da Vinci Code.’” He said he had wanted the black screen to continue through the credits, but did not receive a Directors Guild waiver. CBS News/AP

Which explanation is most accurate?
| Reading | What supports it | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Tony is killed | The abrupt cut, the threatening atmosphere at Holsten’s, the bathroom echo of The Godfather, and Chase’s reported comments that he considered killing Tony. | The finale never shows the killing; Chase’s abandoned New York plan was a different scene. |
| The ending leaves Tony’s fate unresolved | The aired episode cuts away without showing what happens, and Chase’s representative said whether Tony is alive or dead was not the point. | Unresolved does not mean the scene rules out death; the sequence strongly invites that possibility. |
The most careful explanation is that Tony’s death is a strong, supported interpretation, but the finale deliberately leaves it off-screen. Chase’s reported comments make clear that death was considered; they should not be confused with a filmed or explicit confirmation of the diner scene’s outcome.
