How to Stream a Continuous YouTube Playlist with FFmpeg on a DigitalOcean VPS

A practical guide to running a continuous YouTube playlist with FFmpeg on a DigitalOcean VPS, including playlist compatibility, YouTube ingest choices, process supervision, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.

To stream a playlist continuously, prepare media FFmpeg can read in sequence, send its output to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint, and keep FFmpeg running under a process supervisor on a DigitalOcean Droplet. You must also create or select a YouTube broadcast and bind it to the incoming stream: starting FFmpeg alone does not create the viewer-facing live event.

The exact FFmpeg command depends on your playlist format, whether the files have compatible codecs and timestamps, and whether you are relaying or re-encoding them. The workflow below explains how to choose and validate those pieces without presenting an untested, one-size-fits-all command as universal.

How the YouTube and FFmpeg pieces fit together

YouTube treats the incoming audio/video feed and the watchable live event as separate objects. In YouTube’s Live Streaming API, a liveStream carries the incoming feed and its delivery settings; a liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch. You bind a broadcast to a stream. YouTube documents reusing a stream for different broadcasts, including a continuous feed and a separate interview event. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

For this setup, FFmpeg reads and sends the media, YouTube receives it at an ingest address using a stream key, and the Droplet runs the process continuously. You need to check both sides: FFmpeg can report successful output while the YouTube event is not in the state you intend.

1. Confirm YouTube Live access and prepare a broadcast

  1. Confirm live streaming is available for your channel. Use YouTube’s current live control interface and complete any account setup or eligibility steps it presents.
  2. Create or select a broadcast. Make sure you know which viewer-facing event you intend to use. Select or create an incoming stream and bind it to that broadcast in YouTube’s live controls.
  3. Copy the ingest details securely. Get the ingest address and stream key from the channel’s live control interface. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it in examples, commit it to source control, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a broadly readable service file or shell history. YouTube’s HLS documentation explicitly describes the key as secret information identifying the creator and stream.
  4. Choose the ingest protocol before building the output. A generic RTMP/RTMPS output and YouTube’s HLS ingest workflow are not interchangeable. Use the protocol supported by your chosen FFmpeg build and follow the corresponding current YouTube encoder guidance. Check the stream in the live control room after sending test output.

YouTube’s HLS guide presents a Creator Studio URL example as an incomplete template and describes that method as beta. Do not treat that template as a timeless, generic ingest URL. The HLS constraints below apply specifically when you choose YouTube HLS ingestion, not automatically to an RTMP/RTMPS command.

2. Prepare and validate the playlist

Choose an FFmpeg input method that matches the files

“Playlist” can mean different things. An M3U file, a list for FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, and a file-level concat protocol are not the same input method. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes them: the concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding; the concat filter is appropriate when the media must be re-encoded; the concat protocol is a separate method that works only with formats that support file-level concatenation. Do not assume an arbitrary M3U, mixed-format folder, or changing directory will work as a seamless live source.

Choose the input syntax deliberately, then test a representative sequence—including a transition between files—before scheduling a long broadcast. A playlist file that parses successfully is not proof that every transition will be clean.

Check compatibility and decide whether to normalize

For each item, inspect dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, pixel format, audio presence, and timestamps. Check that video and audio end and transition sensibly at file boundaries. If the files differ in parameters or timestamps in ways that prevent a stable output, normalize or re-encode them to a consistent profile, or construct a concat-filter graph that does so. Re-encoding increases CPU demand on the VPS; relaying already encoded media has a different workload.

  • Test the files that are most likely to expose problems: the first and last items, items with different dimensions or frame rates, and files with different audio arrangements.
  • Confirm that audio does not stop before the corresponding video and that transitions do not produce gaps, freezes, or timestamp errors.
  • Verify looping behavior with the chosen input arrangement. A finite playlist ending normally is not, by itself, a continuous feed.
  • Keep a stable output profile if you are encoding. Confirm that the VPS sustains real-time encoding with your actual media and settings before relying on it.

3. Choose an ingest protocol and configure the output

RTMP/RTMPS-style output

For a simpler FFmpeg workflow, use the ingest method supported by your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Supply the correct ingest address and key through a protected configuration or secret-injection method rather than putting a real key in a public command example. The precise command depends on the input arrangement, output container and codecs, and whether FFmpeg copies or encodes the streams; no single command is safe to prescribe without those details.

After connecting, inspect FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding, and network errors, then confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream and that the broadcast is live. YouTube’s health information can flag low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, GOP or keyframe mismatch, and keyframes that arrive too infrequently. One documented YouTube health message recommends a keyframe interval of four seconds or less; treat that as guidance for the relevant output, not a substitute for checking current encoder recommendations and the selected protocol.

YouTube HLS ingestion

HLS is a segment-based upload protocol with its own playlist and delivery contract. Google’s YouTube HLS ingestion guide says a media playlist lists segments that can be concatenated into a continuous, decodable stream. If you select HLS, follow its current requirements rather than appending generic HLS options to an RTMP output.

  • Send media playlists and media segments to the HLS endpoint over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST. Use a media playlist, not a master playlist.
  • Send one encoded stream with muxed audio and video. The guide lists H.264 and HEVC video, AAC single-track audio, and requires a closed GOP; it supports up to 60 fps.
  • Keep each segment at five seconds or less. The guide recommends one-to-four-second segments. Shorter segments can reduce latency but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency; HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC.
  • Start the playlist sequence at zero and increase it monotonically. Update the playlist for each segment and keep no more than five outstanding segments.

These are HLS-specific rules. Confirm that the FFmpeg build and output muxer you use can satisfy the required upload behavior, then verify the incoming feed in YouTube’s live control room.

4. Keep FFmpeg running after SSH disconnects and reboots

Do not depend on an interactive SSH session staying open for a continuous stream. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another supervised process so it can start after a reboot and restart after a process exit. Use a protected configuration or secret-injection approach appropriate to your host for the stream key; avoid a world-readable unit file or other exposed configuration.

Configure the supervisor to restart on unexpected exits, and retain logs you can inspect. A restart policy can recover from an FFmpeg process exit, but it cannot fix invalid media, a revoked stream key, an unavailable ingest endpoint, or a broadcast that requires an operator to change its state. Plan to check FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health rather than assuming that a running process guarantees a healthy public broadcast.

5. Size the DigitalOcean Droplet for the actual workload

A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine, but a network ceiling alone does not tell you whether a particular plan can encode your media in real time. DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits page, last verified August 19, 2026, states maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for non-GPU, non-premium-CPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for premium CPU Droplets. These are ceilings, not plan recommendations or evidence that a given CPU can sustain a particular transcode.

Check the current plan’s included outbound transfer and network limits before choosing a Droplet. DigitalOcean counts outbound traffic against the monthly transfer allowance. Estimate stream transfer from the actual encoded bitrate and expected runtime: multiply bits per second by seconds streamed, convert bits to bytes, then add protocol/container overhead and a margin. Compare that estimate with the allowance for the specific plan. Do not infer a required plan from resolution alone.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • If relaying pre-encoded media: measure the actual outbound bitrate and verify transfer capacity, storage, and network headroom.
  • If re-encoding: test sustained real-time encoding using the actual codec settings and media. The CPU demand depends on the workload; a plan’s network ceiling does not establish encoding capacity.
  • For either approach: account for storage for media and logs, and verify the selected plan’s current limits and total cost before going live.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg sends data, but viewers do not see a live event The incoming stream is not bound to the intended broadcast, or the broadcast is not live. Check the stream-to-broadcast association and event state in YouTube’s live controls. Sending packets does not create or start the viewer-facing event by itself.
FFmpeg rejects a playlist or stops at a file transition The input syntax is wrong for the playlist, or files are incompatible in codecs, parameters, or timestamps. Confirm whether you are using the concat demuxer, concat filter, concat protocol, or another supported input arrangement. Test transitions and normalize or re-encode mismatched inputs as needed.
Video freezes, audio drops, or the stream has gaps Unstable timestamps, incompatible file parameters, an audio/video duration mismatch, or insufficient encoding capacity. Inspect representative files and FFmpeg logs, test the transition where the fault occurs, and compare actual VPS performance with the chosen output workload.
YouTube reports low bitrate or a frame-rate, GOP, or keyframe warning The output does not match the relevant ingest guidance or is not arriving consistently. Use the health details in YouTube’s live controls, verify the output profile and keyframe behavior, and consult the current encoder guidance for the protocol in use.
The process restarts but the stream does not recover A restart cannot resolve a bad key, invalid input, unavailable endpoint, or broadcast state requiring attention. Read the retained FFmpeg logs, verify the key and ingest details securely, check endpoint availability, and inspect the broadcast state in YouTube.
The Droplet approaches its transfer allowance Continuous outbound streaming consumes data throughout the runtime. Calculate transfer from the actual bitrate and hours streamed, include overhead and margin, and compare it with the current plan allowance. Revisit the output bitrate or hosting plan if the estimate exceeds capacity.
