To run a 24/7 YouTube stream from FFmpeg over Airtel Xstream, connect the streaming computer to the Airtel router—preferably by Ethernet—measure sustained upload from that computer, then send an RTMPS stream to the YouTube event using a bitrate your connection can reliably sustain. Airtel’s advertised plan speed is not a promise of your actual upload rate. You do not ordinarily need bridge mode or port forwarding for this outbound publishing setup.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

  • An active Airtel Xstream connection and access to its router.
  • A computer that can read and encode the source video continuously, plus FFmpeg built with the required codecs and protocol support.
  • A YouTube Live event and its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
  • A source file suitable for looping, if you want the same recording to repeat. Confirm you have the rights to stream its video and audio.

Airtel’s broadband page advertises plans from ₹499 at up to 40 Mbps to ₹3,999 at up to 1 Gbps, with prices exclusive of taxes and plan availability and terms varying by location. Those are plan-tier figures, not guaranteed sustained upload speeds for an individual connection. Check the current offer for your address and test the line you will actually use. Airtel broadband plans

Connect the computer and check the Airtel router

Prefer a wired LAN connection

Connect the computer’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on the Airtel router where practical. A wired connection removes the computer-to-router Wi-Fi link as one source of fluctuation; Wi-Fi can still work if its performance is stable. Check that the computer and router have compatible ports and use a cable long enough for your setup. Airtel’s router guide describes accessing router configuration while connected by LAN or wireless network. Airtel router login guide

Open router settings only if you need them

Airtel gives 192.168.1.1 as a default router-management address. The address, login details, and interface can vary by router model and configuration, so use the label on your device or contact Airtel for model-specific help rather than relying on universal default credentials. You generally do not need to change router settings just to publish an outbound stream to YouTube.

Measure upload from the streaming computer

  1. Stop other heavy network use, such as large uploads or downloads, while measuring.
  2. Run multiple upload speed tests from the computer and location that will run FFmpeg. Test at different times if possible; one result is not proof of sustained performance.
  3. Choose a stream profile whose total outbound traffic stays comfortably below the upload rate you observe consistently. Leave headroom for fluctuations and other network use instead of setting FFmpeg to the highest result from a speed test.
  4. If you later see dropped frames or YouTube stream-health warnings, measure again and try a lower bitrate or resolution before assuming the router needs a special mode.

YouTube itself recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live. Airtel’s advertised tier cannot substitute for a measurement on your own connection. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Choose YouTube-compatible video settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not over 4 seconds. AAC or MP3 are listed audio formats. H.264 with AAC is a straightforward FFmpeg profile. YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

Output profile YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that an Airtel connection can sustain the selected rate. The values are for video; leave additional upload capacity for audio and transport overhead. Choose the matching resolution-and-frame-rate row, then reduce the profile or bitrate if your measured upload is variable. For 30 fps, a GOP/keyframe setting of 60 frames represents two seconds; at another frame rate, calculate the frame count accordingly. See YouTube’s full encoder settings guidance for other profiles and current details.

Create a YouTube event and obtain its stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event you intend to use.
  2. Use the event’s stream setup to obtain the YouTube ingest endpoint and stream key.
  3. Choose the RTMPS endpoint if your encoder and event provide one. YouTube documents RTMPS as its secure ingest option and accepts RTMP/RTMPS protocols.
  4. Keep the key private. Avoid placing it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared repositories; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.

The exact endpoint and key format come from the YouTube event, so do not copy a guessed URL into FFmpeg. FFmpeg documents RTMP-family protocols, but confirm that your installed build supports the protocol and TLS features required by the supplied RTMPS endpoint. FFmpeg protocol documentation

Build and run an FFmpeg command

This illustrative command loops an input file in real time and publishes 720p30 H.264 video at an 8 Mbps target with AAC audio. It is not a tested Airtel-specific command, and 8 Mbps is not automatically safe for your line. Replace the input path and YouTube endpoint/key, and adapt frame rate, resolution, audio, bitrate, and encoder settings to your source, computer, and measured connection.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the source at its normal playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. Check that the file is available and decodes cleanly at the loop point.
  • -r 30 sets the output frame rate to 30 fps; -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set the video bitrate target and ceiling in this example. The matching rate-control settings do not ensure the network can carry that bitrate.
  • -bufsize 16M sets the encoder’s rate-control buffer size in this example. Keep the output profile consistent with YouTube’s recommendations and your upload capacity.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at the shown bitrate and sample rate. Confirm that the input contains the expected audio. If no audio is required, change stream mapping and audio options deliberately, then verify the resulting YouTube stream.

If your FFmpeg build lacks libx264 or RTMPS support, the command will fail; check the build configuration and available encoders/protocols rather than assuming every package includes them. Consult the FFmpeg protocol reference for protocol behavior. Never publish a real stream key in the command text you share.

Test the stream and keep a 24/7 process observable

  1. Before relying on the stream, test with representative motion and audio from the actual source.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream preview, health indicators, and messages during the test. Confirm that picture, sound, frame rate, and the event itself behave as expected.
  3. For continuous operation, run FFmpeg under an operating-system process supervisor configured to log exits and restart the process after failure. The exact service configuration depends on the computer’s operating system.
  4. Monitor source-file availability, the computer’s encoding load, network state, router power, disk space if recording, and YouTube stream health. A process restart can recover from some FFmpeg failures; it cannot repair an Airtel outage, an unavailable source, or a YouTube-side problem.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. A successful test does not establish uninterrupted service over a long run.

Do you need bridge mode, a static IP, or port forwarding?

For this workflow, FFmpeg initiates an outbound connection to YouTube over RTMPS. The official Airtel and YouTube materials cited here do not state that ordinary outbound live publishing requires bridge mode, a public or static IP, or inbound port forwarding. Do not change unrelated NAT settings pre-emptively. If the connection cannot reach YouTube, diagnose the actual FFmpeg error and router/network behavior, then seek Airtel guidance specific to your account and router model.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg cannot connect to the ingest server Endpoint, key, protocol support, or network reachability Copy the endpoint and key from the selected YouTube event, confirm the key has not changed, verify FFmpeg supports the required RTMPS protocol, and check the exact error before changing router settings.
YouTube reports dropped frames or an unstable stream Upload variation, competing traffic, Wi-Fi, or an excessive bitrate Repeat an upload test on the streaming computer, stop competing transfers, try Ethernet if possible, and lower bitrate or output profile to add headroom.
Video stutters even though the network seems stable Encoding capacity, source decoding, or frame-rate mismatch Check CPU/GPU load and FFmpeg logs, use a less demanding preset or lower output profile, and confirm the source can be decoded and looped by the installed build.
Picture works but audio is missing or wrong Input audio stream or audio mapping/encoding Inspect the input streams, verify that the source has the expected audio, and adjust FFmpeg mapping and AAC settings; test the result in YouTube preview.
The stream stops after a local failure FFmpeg process, source file, computer, router, or ISP connection Inspect supervisor and FFmpeg logs, confirm the source still exists, restore the local process or connection, and check YouTube health. A restart policy only addresses process failures it can detect.
