YouTube does not keep the feed running by itself: a person or system must start it, monitor it, and recover it if it fails. Plan a separate way for students to find individual lectures, because a 24/7 stream is not a substitute for a course archive.
Before you start: channel access, rights, and responsibilities
Check live-stream eligibility and activation time
Use the university-approved YouTube account and follow its access and governance process. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder streaming guide.
Get permission for every element in the recordings
Before broadcasting, confirm that the university has the necessary rights for the instructor’s performance, student image or voice, slides, readings, music, guest contributions, and third-party clips. YouTube’s livestream terms say content providers must have the necessary rights for live content and its exploitation on Google services. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party material; a stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
University policy, student privacy, accessibility, records retention, and course-material licensing requirements depend on the institution and jurisdiction. Have the relevant campus offices review the proposed broadcast and archive practices; YouTube’s platform guidance cannot determine those obligations for a particular university.

Choose how the continuous feed will run
YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. A continuous prerecorded program needs an operating plan as well as an encoder: decide who or what starts the feed, watches for problems, and restores service after an encoder, network, or platform interruption.

Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Prepare the channel. Verify the university channel, confirm it has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming early enough to allow for the possible first-time activation delay.
- Prepare the program. Assemble the class recordings or playlist in the order viewers should see them. Check the audio and video, confirm rights, and make sure the program identifies the course and current lecture.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow YouTube’s current prompts for stream details and visibility.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to the channel. Do not publish it or share it broadly; reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and preview. Start the feed from the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and the viewer-facing watch page before announcing the stream. Confirm the picture, audio, title, and visibility are correct.
- Monitor the live session. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and have a named person or system responsible for alerts and recovery. A continuous channel needs a response plan if the encoder stops, the network fails, or YouTube drops the stream.
Test network capacity and stream quality
Test with the same recordings, encoder, network, and operating conditions you expect during the live program. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, monitoring stream health, and leaving upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate. Its streaming tips recommend 20% spare upload bandwidth above the bitrate; for example, a feed using 10 Mbps needs at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. This is headroom, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Check audio levels and synchronization as well as video quality.
- Verify the encoder is sending to the intended stream and that the preview updates.
- Test the actual connection the encoder will use; a speed test on a different network does not establish that the broadcast connection is stable.
- Confirm who receives an alert and who can restart the encoder or switch to a backup feed.
Make class recordings easy to find
A continuous live channel can provide scheduled or ambient viewing, but students often need a specific lecture rather than whatever happens to be playing. Publish a clear course schedule and provide a separate route to individual classes, such as a course playlist or individual recordings where permissions allow. Identify the course and lecture in the stream information, and explain how students can locate the relevant class.

Plan replays separately from the 24/7 feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Because a continuous stream exceeds that threshold, do not rely on one complete automatic archive of the whole program. Preserve the source class recordings and organize replays independently.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: check channel verification, prior live-stream restrictions, and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The preview does not appear: confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
- The feed buffers or loses quality: check the encoder’s upload connection and available headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the stream bitrate; test on the actual broadcast connection.
- The stream is interrupted over third-party content: investigate the flagged material and the rights documentation. Contact the rights holder about allowlisting the channel where appropriate; a license does not guarantee that automated detection will not interrupt a live feed.
- There is no complete replay of the 24/7 program: this is not a reliable archive strategy for a stream over 12 hours. Keep recordings as individual class files and manage replay publication separately.
- Students cannot tell which lecture is playing: improve the course and lecture labeling, publish a schedule, and offer a playlist or individual-video route to the class they need.
