A slow VPS disk can cause FFmpeg to fall behind, but stuttering alone does not prove storage is the problem. First identify whether FFmpeg is reading a file, writing a local recording, or doing both. Then remove optional disk writes for a controlled test and compare FFmpeg’s progress with CPU load, YouTube stream health, outbound capacity, and storage activity. Add buffering only for brief interruptions; it cannot fix a sustained storage or network bottleneck.
Find out whether the disk is actually involved
Map the data path in the FFmpeg command before changing settings. FFmpeg can read regular files, network streams, pipes, and capture devices, then write to a local file or a network destination such as YouTube. A file-based source involves disk reads; a simultaneous local archive adds disk writes. Logs or temporary files on the same constrained volume may add activity too. Those cases call for different fixes. See the FFmpeg documentation.
- Source: Is the input a media file on the VPS, a network input, a live capture device, or a generated source?
- Outputs: Does the process send the stream to YouTube and also save a local recording?
- Shared activity: Are other jobs reading or writing heavily on the same volume when the stutter occurs?
There is no universal VPS disk-latency or throughput threshold that identifies a problem across providers. Guest-visible measurements may not reveal contention on the underlying host, depending on the provider and virtualization setup. Correlate whatever read/write activity, latency, and queueing metrics your operating system or provider exposes with the times FFmpeg falls behind.
Run a controlled test and check other bottlenecks
- Capture a baseline. Note the FFmpeg command, input, output, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and when the stutter occurs. Check FFmpeg’s progress and error output alongside the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Remove optional writes. If the command saves a local archive, run a short representative test without that output. Keep the source, encoder settings, resolution, frame rate, and network path as consistent as practical, and avoid unrelated disk-heavy jobs. Improvement is evidence to investigate the write path, not proof by itself; compare measurements over the same interval.
- Check CPU and the encoded output. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, the local archive if present, and the outbound connection when diagnosing stream trouble. If the encoder preview or archive is already poor, investigate the source or encoding path. If those look good but YouTube’s stream health is poor, examine connectivity and upload capacity. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and stream metrics guidance.
- Compare upload capacity to bitrate. The VPS must sustain the configured stream bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends 20% room for upload bandwidth; this is network headroom, not a disk benchmark. Its streaming tips explain testing and network considerations.
- Correlate storage metrics. Compare storage activity and any available latency or queueing figures with FFmpeg’s slowdowns. Repeat under representative conditions long enough to cover when the original symptom appeared.
Apply the fix that matches the evidence
If local recording writes are the constraint
Remove the optional archive during the stream, relocate it, or reduce competing writes. If a recording is required, test a volume whose measured performance suits the workload. Do not assume you can attach an external physical drive to a hosted VPS; availability depends on the provider.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If source-file reads are the constraint
Reduce competing reads and ask the VPS provider about the storage type, sharing or provisioning model, and sustained read performance available to your instance. Upgrade or migrate only if measurements point to a persistent provider-side storage limit. A disk change is not a guaranteed fix unless the workload and provider’s limits support that conclusion.
If CPU or encoding cannot keep up
Check CPU load and encoder behavior before adjusting the stream. If the encoder cannot sustain the requested frame rate, consider lowering resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity, then test the result. The evidence here does not establish a particular FFmpeg preset as a remedy for disk contention.

If outbound network capacity is insufficient
Lower the configured bitrate or improve the VPS’s outbound connection, and preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. A healthy local preview with poor stream health can point toward connectivity rather than storage.
Use FFmpeg options carefully
Do not add -re as a general stutter fix
FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1: it paces file input at its native rate. The command-line documentation cautions that low read rates on actual capture devices or live streams may cause packet loss. Use it only when the input workflow calls for paced file reading, not as a universal cure. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the installed version.

Understand what FIFO buffering can and cannot do
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can decouple encoding from output writes and support recovery behavior. A finite buffer may bridge a temporary interruption, but it cannot create disk capacity or compensate for sustained under-capacity. Options that drop packets risk losing media. Check the muxer documentation for the installed FFmpeg version before using FIFO options.
FFmpeg also documents that “The demuxer buffers the input to allow seeking. Seeking is not possible in some cases.” That describes input buffering and seeking behavior; it is not a general fix for slow storage. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings
A valid encoder configuration will not fix a slow disk, but it helps prevent unrelated stream problems from obscuring the diagnosis. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings rather than choosing a generic bitrate.
YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal VPS disk threshold, and no provider’s upgrade can be assumed to resolve an unmeasured bottleneck. Compare provider plans on documented storage type and performance limits, sharing or provisioning, sustained read/write behavior, included upload capacity, CPU allocation, and measurement or upgrade terms.

Validate the change before relying on it
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static or silent segment.
- Monitor FFmpeg progress and YouTube stream health during the test, and review YouTube’s messages afterward.
- If local recording is enabled, check that the archive is acceptable as well as the live playback.
- Repeat the test for long enough to cover the conditions that produced the original stutter.
YouTube recommends testing with representative content, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages in its streaming tips and metrics guidance.
