Yes—a Raspberry Pi can host an encoder that sends a continuous Marathi-music stream to YouTube Live, but the board alone does not make a 24/7 broadcast dependable. You need a YouTube-eligible channel, permission for every recording and composition, an encoding workload the Pi can sustain, stable upload and power, and a plan for restarts and interruptions. A Raspberry Pi 5 is a candidate to test, not a proven always-on music-streaming appliance.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it before your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- A Raspberry Pi, suitable power supply, cooling, storage and network connection sized for the encoding and uptime you intend to test. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications list a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit CPU, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, microSD and RAM options through 16GB. These specifications do not establish that a particular setup will run this workload continuously. See Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.
- Audio and any accompanying visual that you have permission to broadcast on YouTube Live, in the relevant territories and for the intended uses.
- Encoder software configured for YouTube’s supported protocols and settings, plus a private or unlisted test before public launch.
This guide describes the setup decisions and validation process rather than claiming a tested, version-specific FFmpeg command: the available evidence does not establish a particular Pi, operating system and software combination as a reliable 24/7 build.
Clear the Marathi music rights first
Having a song in a personal library or access to it through a music-streaming service does not establish the right to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.
For each track, confirm that your permission covers live streaming on YouTube, the territories where the stream will be available, monetization if you plan to enable it, and retention of the archived replay. Keep written license records. The rights needed depend on the particular recording, composition and permission; no blanket rule here determines the rights for a Marathi song.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may result in a placeholder, interruption or termination. Even if you hold a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube explains live-stream copyright issues and allowlisting. A Content ID match is not itself a ruling on whether you have a license.
Choose a Pi workload you can validate
The main distinction is whether the Pi only needs to send audio with a simple static image or must also generate a more demanding visualizer. A moving visual adds encoding work; the effect depends on the software, resolution, encoder path and Pi model. Measure the actual setup instead of assuming that camera-oriented Pi documentation predicts how an audio playlist and visual will perform.

Raspberry Pi 5
Pi 5’s published specifications make it a candidate to evaluate, but do not prove sustained performance for your chosen FFmpeg or playlist workflow. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation describes camera-oriented software video-encoding workflows; that is not a benchmark for a 24/7 music stream. Do not assume Pi 5 includes a hardware H.264 encoder or that it will sustain a given output without testing.
What to compare during your test
- Visual workload: compare a static background with the visualizer or motion you intend to use, at the target output resolution.
- Network: test wired Gigabit Ethernet if available and compare stability with Wi-Fi in the actual installation location.
- Media source: use the rights-cleared files and playlist behavior intended for the real broadcast.
- Encoding: record CPU use, temperature, audio continuity and stream health over a representative test. Check behavior when a file ends, the encoder exits, the network drops and the connection returns.
Use appropriate power, cooling and storage for the selected board and environment. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 launch announcement listed starting prices of $60 for 4GB and $80 for 8GB before local taxes; those are historical launch prices, not current retail prices. See the launch announcement.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming early. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. YouTube’s eligibility page has the current requirements.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, then use the Live Control Room’s encoder workflow to create or select the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the workflow; interface labels may change.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder privately. The key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, source repository or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting. YouTube’s stream-settings help describes stream keys and configuration.
- Use a private or unlisted test first. Preview the incoming feed in the Live Control Room, inspect stream health, and listen for gaps, clipping or unwanted silence before scheduling or making a public broadcast.
Configure the encoder and upload connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS; H.264, H.265 and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets four seconds as the maximum. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol. Apply the settings your chosen software actually supports, then verify the received stream in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
H.264 video bitrate targets
| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations for H.264 at those specific settings, not a universal preset for every music stream. Notably, the listed 480p recommendation is higher than the 720p recommendation; use the source figures as stated rather than assuming bitrate falls with resolution. Account for audio bitrate as well when estimating the total outgoing stream rate.

Measure upload capacity with headroom
YouTube recommends approximately 20% more upload bandwidth than the total bitrate of the stream. Measure the connection where the Pi will run, at times when it is likely to be busy; a headline ISP plan speed does not show whether the installed connection remains stable. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and network reliability. Prefer a stable wired connection if practical, and include network loss and recovery in the test.

Before relying on a Pi for an unattended stream, run a representative test long enough to expose the failure modes that matter to your installation. Monitor CPU load and temperature, audio playback, available storage, outbound bandwidth and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Check the playlist transition between files and confirm the visual does not unexpectedly stop or overwhelm the encoder.

A process supervisor or operating-system service manager can be configured to restart an encoder process that exits. That only addresses one failure class: it does not restore power, repair a failing internet connection, resolve an account restriction, or prevent YouTube from interrupting a stream. Decide how you will notice failures and what recovery should look like before leaving the system unattended. YouTube recommends testing, previewing and continuously monitoring live broadcasts. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel verification, a live-stream restriction or first-time activation still pending | Check eligibility and allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming for the first time. |
| YouTube receives no encoder feed | Wrong or stale stream key, incorrect server details, or an encoder that is not sending | Check the stream configuration in YouTube Studio, keep the key private, and restart the encoder with the correct settings. |
| Stream health reports connection trouble or the feed drops | Unstable upload, insufficient bandwidth headroom, Wi-Fi variation or a local network interruption | Measure the connection at the Pi, compare wired Ethernet, and retest with approximately 20% upload headroom over the total stream bitrate. |
| Video stutters or the Pi becomes hot or heavily loaded | The selected resolution, frame rate, visualizer or encoding path may exceed what the setup sustains | Reduce the visual workload or output target and measure CPU use and temperature again; do not assume another Pi configuration will behave identically. |
| Audio has gaps or stops between tracks | Playlist transitions, local file access, decoder behavior or a stopped process | Test the complete playlist and transitions, check storage and logs, and verify that any configured supervisor detects process exit. |
| YouTube inserts a placeholder or interrupts the broadcast | A live-stream match for third-party content, including content whose owner has not allowlisted the channel | Review the matched content and rights documentation; contact the rights owner or administrator about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a Pi, home internet connection and local recovery process is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. The flow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
- Nothing needs to stay powered on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Other billing periods are available, and the product is the same across plans; only the billing length changes.
For a Marathi music channel, you still need the necessary music rights and YouTube account eligibility. Start your free StreamNeo day.
