For a single video, open the OBS Media Source’s Properties and turn on Loop. For several videos, use a VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. These settings repeat media inside OBS; they do not prevent a computer, network, OBS, or YouTube connection from failing.
Fix looping for one video
- In your OBS scene, select the Media Source that plays the video.
- Open the source’s Properties.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the change.
- Test playback through the end of the file and check that it starts again while remaining visible in the scene.
OBS Project describes Loop as replaying the file when playback completes; it is off by default in the OBS documentation. The documented labels are from its Media Sources reference dated 2022-01-11, so check the installed interface if labels differ in your OBS version: OBS Project: Media Sources.
Know what the other playback settings do
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts playback when the source becomes visible or active. It is separate from end-of-file looping and cannot replace Loop. OBS lists this setting as on by default.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what happens to the source’s display after playback ends. It does not enable looping.
- Close file when inactive unloads media while the source is hidden. When the source becomes visible again, it may take a short time to reload.
These controls are documented by the OBS Project Media Sources reference.
Loop a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries and may not appear without the dependency.
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene and populate its playlist with your clips.
- Enable Loop Playlist so the playlist starts again after it runs out.
- Choose whether to keep the playlist in its listed order or enable Shuffle Playlist for a different order. Shuffle changes the order; it does not turn looping on.
- Test the playlist through its final clip and verify that the first clip plays again.
OBS documents Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist as separate controls. Its reference explicitly says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source is missing, first install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. See OBS Project: Media Sources.

Choose the source that fits your material

For a playlist, use the listed order or shuffle according to the sequence you want. Separately, select how the source behaves when hidden—such as stopping and restarting, pausing and unpausing, or continuing to play—using the available visibility settings in OBS. Those behaviors do not replace the loop control.
Test before relying on a long stream
- Confirm that the intended source is in the active scene and points to the correct local file or playlist.
- Check that the source stays visible as playback reaches the end.
- Watch for the file or playlist to start again rather than assuming the checkbox took effect.
- If it still fails, record your OBS version, operating system, file container and codec, source properties, and OBS log. Those details are needed to distinguish a playback problem from a configuration or compatibility issue.
If the video loops but the YouTube stream stops
A looping source only controls media playback inside OBS. It does not make OBS immune to a crash, a sleeping or powered-off computer, a network outage, or an interruption to YouTube’s ingest connection. If the video continues locally but viewers lose the broadcast, troubleshoot the stream connection and computer separately from the source’s loop setting. The OBS controls described above establish playback behavior, not 24/7 broadcast uptime.
