How to Run an Always-On YouTube Video Stream on a Windows Mini PC

A practical guide to running an always-on YouTube video stream from a Windows mini PC, with OBS setup, bitrate guidance, reliability checks, and archive caveats.

You can keep a prerecorded video or other feed live on YouTube from a Windows mini PC by sending it through an encoder such as OBS Studio. The setup is straightforward; keeping it reliable means choosing settings the PC and internet connection can sustain, monitoring the stream, and planning for interruptions. YouTube does not guarantee that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived.

Before you start

Check that your YouTube channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. If you have never enabled live streaming on the channel, activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 mini PC that can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene. OBS support for an operating system is not a guarantee that a particular computer can handle a particular workload. Check OBS Studio’s system requirements.
  • OBS Studio and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the complete stream.
  • A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • Video and audio you have the right to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Licensed content may still be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID where applicable. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.

Set up OBS and YouTube Live

  1. Install OBS Studio. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual video, resolution, frame rate, and scene you plan to run. OBS’s stated Windows compatibility is an operating-system floor, not a mini-PC performance rating.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live, and create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe the setup.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, find the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If someone else obtains it, reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  4. Set encoder output for a workload your mini PC can sustain. For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists a recommended video bitrate of 5 Mbps and a minimum of 4 Mbps. Its general guidance supports CBR and H.264, H.265, or AV1 with RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates for the resolution and frame rate you select. These are platform settings, not a guarantee your PC or connection can sustain them.
  5. Check upload capacity with the whole stream running. Test your real outbound speed, preferably over a wired connection if available. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Include audio and movement similar to the eventual content, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health messages before relying on the setup. A connection disruption can break the stream; see YouTube’s network guidance.
  6. Start with a private or unlisted test. Confirm that video and audio reach the Live Control Room preview, that playback is stable, and that the selected output looks and sounds right before making the stream public.
  7. Set up a local recording if the footage matters. Configure OBS to record locally and verify that the file is growing. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive; it also warns that DVR rewind can be limited on very long streams. Review YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and test the viewer experience for your stream.

Keep the mini PC running continuously

OBS can send the video, but an always-on setup also depends on the PC, power, network, and encoder continuing to work. Treat the stream as a system to monitor rather than assuming that starting it once ensures uninterrupted service.

  • Prevent Windows from sleeping while the stream is meant to run, and review update and restart behavior so an unattended restart does not surprise you. Exact menu labels can vary by Windows version and configuration.
  • Use a reliable power source and network connection. A wired connection, where practical, avoids relying on Wi-Fi conditions, but no connection method guarantees uninterrupted service.
  • Watch OBS and YouTube Live Control Room for disconnections, dropped frames, or stream-health messages. Check the local recording file if you need a backup.
  • Test the full setup for an extended period before depending on it. Mini PCs vary, and sustained performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and the specific system’s thermal behavior.

Choose a mini PC by the workload, not its size

There is no universal minimum mini-PC specification established for this job. A machine that can run OBS may still struggle with a particular output setting or complex scene. When assessing a PC, check the available CPU or GPU encoder, whether it can sustain your target resolution and frame rate, wired-network availability, heat behavior under prolonged load, restart recovery, local-recording storage, noise, and price. Treat these as evaluation criteria, not as tested performance claims for any model.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel, then check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream is unstable or drops: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the real upload rate. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the connection or encoder cannot sustain the current settings, and retest with headroom.
  • OBS reports performance trouble: Reduce the workload—such as resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity—and test again. Windows compatibility alone does not establish that the mini PC can handle a chosen stream.
  • The stream stops after a Windows or power interruption: Restore power and network, reopen OBS if needed, and check whether YouTube is receiving the encoder again. Plan for manual recovery unless you have verified a restart and recovery setup on your own PC.
  • A live stream is interrupted over content: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and use only material you have the rights to stream. If you hold a license, check whether the rights holder needs to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
  • A long broadcast has no complete archive or limited rewind: YouTube may not archive streams that exceed 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited on long streams. Use a local recording when you need to retain the full program.
