For one prerecorded video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key, and check the preview before starting the broadcast.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Repeat setting | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video repeatedly | Media Source | Loop | Select the video file in the source properties. |
| Several local videos in sequence, repeated | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
These controls repeat playback in your OBS scene. They do not by themselves send the scene to YouTube: OBS must also be connected to a YouTube encoder stream. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Prepare YouTube Live
- Confirm that your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key lets your encoder send the feed; treat it like a credential and do not share or publish it.
Build a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select or create the scene for the broadcast. In Sources, choose +, select VLC Video, and create the source.
- Add the local video files to the source playlist and arrange them in the order you want viewers to see them.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback returns to the beginning after the final file. Leave Shuffle off if the order should remain fixed.
- Check the scene for picture and sound. Confirm that the files are available at their selected locations.
To repeat only one video
Instead of VLC Video, add a Media Source, select the local file, and turn on Loop in its properties. Use VLC Video for an ordered multi-file playlist.
Connect OBS and test the broadcast
- Open OBS stream settings. Select YouTube if the integration is available; otherwise enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder in OBS and wait for the picture and sound to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Run a controlled test, such as an unlisted stream if appropriate. Check that the playlist advances, returns to the first file, and carries audio in the YouTube preview.
- When the feed looks right, start the scheduled event in Live Control Room. When finished, end the event and stop the encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
What must stay running
With this OBS method, the media files are played locally and OBS sends the encoder feed. The files must remain available, and the computer running playback and encoding plus its internet connection must keep operating for the stream to continue. This workflow is not an uptime guarantee; test the full setup and monitor audio and video quality during an unattended broadcast. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream.

Copyright, content rules, and archives
YouTube says live streams must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; violating content may be removed or age-restricted. You need the rights to broadcast each video and its soundtrack. A successful OBS setup does not establish that a file is licensed for streaming.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not establish automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not rely on an archive for a longer broadcast.
