You can automatically add new channel uploads to a separate YouTube playlist with the YouTube Data API. The automation reads the channel’s uploads playlist, checks which videos are new, and inserts eligible ones into your stream’s destination playlist using playlistItems.insert. This requires OAuth authorization from the channel owner.
That only updates the playlist. It does not start, update, or keep a live broadcast running; the playlist workflow and the stream host or encoder must be configured separately.
How the automatic queue works
YouTube Studio supports manually creating and ordering playlists, changing their privacy, and adding videos from search, a URL, or your library. Its documented playlist workflow does not describe a rule that automatically adds future uploads to an ordinary playlist. For automatic queuing, use the YouTube Data API or an automation built on it.
- Watch the uploads playlist. Get the channel’s uploads playlist ID from its channel resource, then read its items with
playlistItems.list. - Track what has already been handled. Compare the upload items against a record of video IDs already processed, and check the destination playlist for duplicates before inserting.
- Insert eligible new videos. Send a
playlistItems.insertrequest for each new video to a separate destination playlist. - Run checks again. Reconcile the source and destination on a schedule so that a missed run or temporary error does not leave the queue out of date.
The uploads playlist is a source to read, not the destination: YouTube does not support inserting items into the channel’s special uploaded-videos playlist.

Set up the destination playlist
Create a dedicated playlist
In YouTube Studio, create or identify a regular playlist intended for the stream queue. Keep its playlist ID for the automation. A dedicated target keeps the automation’s job clear and avoids trying to alter YouTube’s special uploads playlist.
Choose the destination’s privacy and ordering deliberately. The Data API supports a position field when inserting an item. If queue order matters, select the position your stream workflow expects and periodically reconcile the playlist against that intended order. The exact behavior of a particular player or 24/7 streaming setup should be verified in that setup; playlist insertion alone does not guarantee how a running broadcast will react to edits.

Keep the source and destination distinct
The channel’s uploads playlist represents the channel’s uploaded videos. Read it to discover new uploads, then write those videos to the regular destination playlist. Do not attempt to use the uploads playlist as the queue target: that operation is unsupported by YouTube.
Authorize and make an insertion
Use channel-owner OAuth
The automation needs OAuth authorization for the channel that owns the destination playlist. YouTube documents the youtube and youtube.force-ssl scopes for this operation; youtubepartner is for eligible content partners. Choose the least access appropriate to your implementation and protect the resulting credentials.

Provide the required IDs
playlistItems.insert is a POST request to the YouTube Data API. Its request body must include snippet.playlistId for the destination and snippet.resourceId identifying the video. For a video resource, the resource ID identifies the video being added. Consult the current YouTube Data API insertion reference for the current request format, authorization details, and accepted fields.
Each insert call costs 50 quota units according to Google’s current YouTube Data API reference, accessed 2026-10-03. Budget for one insert per video, as well as the API calls used to discover uploads and check playlist contents. Quota allocation and API details can change, so check the current reference when implementing.

Handle duplicates, access failures, and ordering
- Duplicates: Keep a durable record of processed video IDs and check the destination before insertion. The API documents a duplicate-item error; treat that response as already queued rather than retrying indefinitely.
- Private, deleted, or inaccessible videos: Decide how to handle videos the authorized account cannot access or that are otherwise ineligible. Log and skip them or revisit them later, rather than letting one failed item block later uploads.
- Missing or invalid IDs: Validate the playlist ID and video resource ID before sending the request. The API documents errors for missing or invalid IDs.
- Playlist size: The API documents an error when a playlist reaches its maximum item count. Plan to remove or archive old queue entries if your workflow needs a continuing destination.
- Unsupported operations: An unsupported-playlist-operation error can occur if the target is not a playlist that accepts inserts, including the channel’s uploads playlist.
- Position and reconciliation: Set insertion position deliberately if sequence matters, then periodically compare the destination with the intended queue. Do not assume a successful edit will change a separately hosted live stream immediately.

A playlist and a live broadcast are separate parts of the setup. The Data API manages playlist items; a live encoder and YouTube Live Control Room settings handle sending the stream. YouTube’s Live API is for live-event management, not a replacement for inserting videos into a playlist.

For an encoder-based broadcast, YouTube says the channel needs verification and must have had no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Configure the stream key and encoder separately, and test stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.
