For motion, Canva recommends exporting an animated overlay as an MP4. Canva’s starting canvas recommendation for Twitch overlays is 1920 Ă— 1080 px—not a universal platform requirement.
Plan the overlay before opening Canva
Decide what the overlay should frame and what must remain unobstructed. A full-screen border can reinforce a channel’s look, while a few small elements leave more room for the live content. Canva suggests planning for items such as a webcam, chat, social handles, subscriber goals, and donor information.
- Choose the target canvas and identify where gameplay, video, or a camera feed will sit.
- Decide whether you need a webcam frame, chat panel, lower third, social labels, or a separate starting or intermission screen.
- Keep important text and decoration out of areas where live content will cover them.
- Plan changing information carefully: a Canva design is static artwork unless you add motion. It does not automatically update subscriber or donation figures or generate live alerts; configure those separately in streaming software.
Create the design in Canva
Start with a template or blank design
- Open Canva and search for “Twitch Overlay.” Choose a template that suits your channel, or start with a blank design. Canva’s templates include free and premium options. See Canva’s Twitch overlay maker.
- Use Canva’s recommended 1920 × 1080 px canvas as a starting point for a Twitch overlay. It is Canva’s recommendation, not a universal Twitch-mandated size. If your broadcast scene uses a different canvas, design for that target instead.
Customize the frame and graphics
Arrange frames, shapes, icons, patterns, illustrations, images, and text to match your channel’s colors and typography. Keep the visual hierarchy restrained: the overlay should support the stream, not compete with the game, video, or speaker. Preview the composition with the main content area in mind before adding decorative details.
Set transparency
For a partially transparent panel or individual graphic, select the element and use Canva’s Transparency control in the toolbar; Canva Help says you can drag the slider or enter a value. This changes the selected element’s opacity, not the exported page’s background. See Canva Help’s transparency instructions.

For a transparent background around your overlay artwork, export as PNG and enable the transparent-background option if it is available for your account. Canva Help lists transparent PNG and other advanced download options for Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits accounts. Check the download panel for your current account before relying on transparent export. See Canva’s file-type and download guidance.
Add animation only if it serves a purpose
Canva’s overlay guide describes text animations, transitions, video, and effects. It recommends MP4 for animated overlays; its general download guidance also lists GIF for animated designs or elements and MP4 for designs with video and music. These formats may behave differently in streaming software, so preview the exported file in the intended scene. A static PNG is a useful fallback if motion is unnecessary or does not work as expected.

Export and add the overlay to your stream
- In Canva, open the design’s download options. For a static overlay, choose PNG and enable the transparent-background option if your account provides it. For an animated overlay, follow Canva’s overlay guidance and choose MP4. Canva’s documented export choices are described in its overlay guide and download file-type guide.
- Save the file and open the scene you intend to use in your broadcasting software. Canva names OBS and Streamlabs among the tools that can use exported overlays.
- Add the exported image or video as a source in that scene, then position and resize it above the gameplay, camera, or other content source.
- Preview the scene. Confirm that the transparent areas reveal the video beneath, text is legible, the overlay sits in the right place, and any animation plays as intended. Interface labels and controls vary by software version, so use the source and scene controls shown in your installed program.
Choose the right file for the job

Canva’s overlay guide puts it simply: “Save your static or animated Twitch overlays as transparent PNGs or MP4 files, respectively.” The broader download guide also documents GIF for animation, which is why a software-side preview matters.
Common problems and fixes
- The overlay has a solid background. A transparent-looking canvas in the editor does not guarantee a transparent export. Use PNG and enable the transparent-background option if your account offers it.
- The export option is missing. Canva Help restricts transparent PNG downloads to Canva Pro, Teams, Education, and Nonprofits accounts. Check the current download panel and account eligibility.
- The game or video is covered. Move the overlay source above the content source, then resize or reposition it so only the intended frame or panel covers the scene.
- Text or decoration is hard to read. Simplify the design, increase contrast, and move labels away from busy or changing parts of the video.
- An animated file does not play as expected. Preview the export in the streaming software; try the other documented animation format where suitable, or use a static PNG fallback.
- Live alerts or changing counts do not update. The Canva overlay is artwork, not a live data widget. Set up alerts or changing information separately in the broadcasting software or its supported integrations.
