What is The OxyContin Express about?
The documentary examines how oxycodone and other prescription pills moved through Florida’s pain-clinic system and into communities farther north. Its investigation looks at clinic practices and the people affected by addiction, while situating the pill trade within the oversight and monitoring systems of that period.
The Peabody Awards’ 2009 profile said the film reported that the 50 U.S. physicians with the highest oxycodone prescription totals all practiced in Florida. It stated that 33 were in Broward County, which had more than 100 pain clinics in the documentary’s account. These are historical figures reported in connection with the film, not current data.

Florida’s response and later figures
A 2020 retrospective by The Florida Bar describes Florida as having over 900 unregulated pain clinics by 2010. It also says that 98 of the 100 U.S. physicians dispensing the highest quantities of oxycodone from their offices were in Florida by that time. These later figures have a different date and scope from the numbers in the Peabody profile.
The Florida Bar describes state responses that included pain-clinic registration and inspections, targeted enforcement, and a prescription drug monitoring program. The program became operational on September 1, 2011. The retrospective reports that opioid-pill deaths fell by more than 38%, from 2,023 in 2010 to 1,244 in 2012, while multiple interventions were underway. It cautions that the effect of any one measure is difficult to isolate.
Production and recognition
The OxyContin Express won a 2009 Peabody Award. The Peabody profile credits Adam Yamaguchi as executive producer; Cerissa Tanner, Darren Foster, and Mariana van Zeller as producers; Darren Foster and Cerissa Tanner as directors; and Darren Foster, Cerissa Tanner, and Mariana van Zeller as writers.
Further reading
For a separate account of a major Florida pill mill, readers can look for John Temple’s book American Pain. The NBER paper and The Florida Bar identify it as a book-length account of the pill mill’s rise and fall; it is supplementary reading, not an official companion to the documentary.

FAQ
What route does the documentary investigate?
It follows prescription-pill traffic from South Florida pain clinics north to Appalachian communities.
Are the documentary’s statistics current?
No. The Peabody profile’s figures describe claims reported in the documentary’s 2009 context. The Florida Bar’s figures describe Florida at later dates, including by 2010 and the period from 2010 to 2012; neither source should be treated as current prevalence or prescribing data.

What changed after Florida regulated pain clinics?
The Florida Bar describes registration and inspection requirements, enforcement, and a prescription drug monitoring program that became operational in September 2011. It reports a decline in opioid-pill deaths during a period when several interventions were in progress, but says their individual effects are difficult to separate.
