How to Run an Always-On YouTube Playlist Stream on Google Cloud Run

A Cloud Run playlist stream needs a workload that stays active without requests, deliberate CPU and cost settings, secure YouTube ingest, and a recovery plan. Jobs have a finite 7-day maximum task timeout.

You can run a looping YouTube Live playlist from Cloud Run, but not by treating it as an ordinary request-driven service and assuming it will stay alive. Use a runtime designed for continuing background work, configure CPU allocation deliberately, keep at least one service instance available if using a service, and build restart and monitoring into the design. A Cloud Run Job is not an indefinite 24/7 process: each task has a maximum configurable timeout of 168 hours (7 days).

This is an architecture guide, not a tested deployment recipe: no FFmpeg container or command line has been validated here. Benchmark your own media, encoder settings, and Cloud Run configuration, and confirm that you have the rights to rebroadcast every item in the playlist.

Choose a Cloud Run workload that can keep processing without requests

A continuous playlist encoder has work to do even when nobody visits a web page. Cloud Run services normally scale to zero when idle; Google advises setting the minimum number of instances to at least one when background threads or asynchronous work must continue without requests. See Cloud Run autoscaling.

That setting alone does not make every service configuration suitable. Cloud Run’s fit guidance describes services receiving requests, streams, or events over HTTP, HTTP/2, WebSockets, or gRPC, as well as execution to completion. A playlist encoder that makes an outbound RTMPS connection but receives no inbound requests needs an architecture and CPU/billing configuration appropriate to continuing, non-request work. Review Google’s current guidance on Cloud Run workloads and autoscaling before choosing the design.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Cloud Run service: consider this only with configuration that keeps the required instance and CPU available for background processing. Ensure the service’s interface and resource limits fit your process.
  • Worker pool: assess current worker-pool capabilities and limits for generic non-request workloads; confirm that the options available in your project support the continuous processing you need.
  • Cloud Run Job: useful for bounded work, but not a single indefinitely running stream. A task can be configured for a maximum timeout of 168 hours (7 days), and must finish within that limit. See Cloud Run Job task timeouts.

For any option, plan for instance resource limits, network behavior, deployments and restarts. Cloud Run’s published fit criteria are not a guarantee that a particular encoder, video, resolution, or playlist will perform reliably on a chosen instance size.

Prepare the playlist container

Your container needs to read authorized media, play items in the intended order, and either loop or schedule them. It must send the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live. Depending on the source files and output profile, the process may encode or remux; exact FFmpeg flags depend on those codecs and choices. No command line is established here as a working configuration.

Before deploying, make the process fail in a way your supervisor can detect. Handle a missing or unreadable file, a failed encoder, and a lost connection explicitly. For unrecoverable errors, exit cleanly so your recovery system can restart the workload rather than leaving it stuck in a failed state.

  • Keep media available to the running instance. Cloud Run instances have bounded resources, so check whether your source storage and any temporary files fit the chosen design.
  • Test the complete playlist, including transitions between files and any audio or video format changes.
  • Use only content you own or are authorized to rebroadcast. Cloud configuration does not grant music, film, documentary, or other media rights; check applicable permissions and YouTube policies separately.

Configure CPU, memory, and cost for continuous encoding

Encoding is ongoing compute, not occasional request handling. Cloud Run’s CPU allocation and billing behavior affect whether work can continue outside requests and what it costs. Select the appropriate CPU and billing configuration for your workload, and consult the current Cloud Run pricing for the target region. There is no reliable universal monthly price for this setup: region, CPU and memory settings, billing mode, runtime, and network egress all matter.

Measure CPU and memory while running representative media at the intended quality. A brief startup test may not reveal resource pressure during a longer playlist or a demanding encode. Recheck Google’s current product documentation because configuration options and billing behavior can change.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live securely

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown there. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance for the current interface.
  2. Use the RTMPS ingest URL if your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; YouTube recommends it for an encrypted connection. Use the secure URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed RTMP endpoint is the secure one. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  3. Store the stream key in a secret-management mechanism and provide it to the workload at runtime. Do not embed it in the container image or source repository, or print it in logs. YouTube treats the key like a password; a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
  4. Restrict access to the secret to the identities that need it. If you suspect compromise, reset the key and update the workload’s secret reference.

Set an encoder profile for the intended output

YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings to select a profile appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For one reference point, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. Do not apply that bitrate to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs: recommended bitrate varies with the profile. The source media and your encoder also affect what settings are practical.

  • Match the encoder’s output dimensions and frame rate to the stream profile you intend to send.
  • Set CBR and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s stated guidance.
  • Check that both the video and audio codecs are supported and that audio is present throughout the playlist.
  • Allow enough stable outbound network capacity for the selected bitrate, with headroom for network variation.

Deploy, test, and supervise the stream

  1. Deploy the container using the selected Cloud Run workload type and resource settings. If you use a service for background work, configure at least one minimum instance and confirm that CPU remains allocated as required.
  2. Supply the stream URL and secret key through runtime configuration, not baked into the image. Verify outbound connectivity to the selected RTMPS endpoint.
  3. Start with a test stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health, confirm that picture and sound are correct, and observe the stream through playlist transitions.
  4. Test the failure paths you can reproduce safely: stop the encoder, interrupt the connection, and verify that your supervision and alerting detect the interruption and recover as intended.
  5. Before relying on the stream, run representative media at the target quality long enough to observe resource use and stability. Adjust CPU, memory, encoder settings, or architecture based on what you measure.
  6. Monitor for a stopped process, failed connection, exhausted resources, or missing output. Alert on interruption and account for Cloud Run deployments and revisions, which can affect a running process. Recovery and alerting are engineering responsibilities, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime from the platform.

Plan for archives and audience access

Decide how viewers will find the live stream and whether you need a recording independent of YouTube’s live archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold does not establish that a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived in full. If you need a complete record of a 24-hour broadcast, arrange and test a separate recording and retention plan.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The stream stops when there are no requests The service scaled to zero, or CPU is not allocated for work outside requests. Confirm the workload type, minimum instance setting, and CPU/billing configuration against Google’s current autoscaling guidance.
The container starts but YouTube receives no video Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported output, or blocked/failed outbound connection. Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, use the RTMPS endpoint where supported, inspect encoder errors, and check stream health.
The process exits or restarts repeatedly Source read failures, resource pressure, or unhandled encoder/network errors. Review logs without exposing secrets, confirm media is accessible, measure CPU and memory, and make failure handling and restart behavior explicit.
Video or audio is unstable Encoder settings, source inconsistencies, or insufficiently stable network capacity. Check codec support, CBR, keyframe interval, audio presence, bitrate for the selected profile, and outbound network stability.
A Job stops after several days Jobs have a finite task timeout. Do not use one Job invocation as an indefinite stream; choose a continuing workload design or plan bounded runs with explicit handoff and recovery.
The live stream works but the full day is not available as an archive YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer streams. Use a separate recording and retention plan if the complete broadcast is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than managing an encoder container, StreamNeo offers a simpler route:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free, with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live service. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
