Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a first YouTube loop, use a spare PC if it can encode your video continuously and your home upload connection is stable. Choose an OVHcloud VPS when you want the encoder off your home network and are comfortable configuring and monitoring a server. Neither option is automatically better: test the exact video, encoder settings, and network before relying on a 24/7 stream.
How to choose between a spare PC and an OVHcloud VPS
| Factor | Spare PC | OVHcloud VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On hardware and an internet connection you control. | On a remotely managed virtual server; you configure and monitor it. |
| Encoding | Depends on the PC’s ability to encode your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate continuously. | Depends on the available CPU resources, encoder support, and sustained performance. Advertised VPS specifications are not encoding benchmarks. |
| Upload path | Your home connection must sustain the outgoing stream bitrate with headroom. | The server sends the stream over its network connection. Listed public bandwidth is not a guarantee of smooth encoding or a good route to YouTube. |
| Costs to consider | Electricity, internet service, and hardware wear or maintenance. Your actual cost depends on power draw and local rates. | Recurring hosting charges, which vary by market and may change; check the current price and regional terms before ordering. |
| Best fit | A low-cost experiment if you already own a suitable PC and your upload connection tests well. | Remote operation is worth the hosting charge and you can handle server setup and monitoring. |
There is no sourced head-to-head benchmark that establishes which option will stream more reliably or encode a particular video better. Choose by the actual workload, sustained outbound capacity, total cost to you, and the maintenance you are willing to do.
Check YouTube’s stream requirements first
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements. Prepare the encoder in advance and test it rather than waiting until the intended start time.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends testing outbound bandwidth and leaving 20% spare upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. A speed-test result is only useful if the connection can sustain the upload; account for other traffic using the same connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that either a given PC or VPS can encode smoothly at those settings. The ranges are for H.264; use guidance appropriate to the actual codec and output. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. The publication year is not shown on the cited YouTube guidance.
Protect the stream key
A YouTube stream key acts like a password and address for your encoder. Keep it private, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube explains stream keys in its live encoder setup instructions.

Check content and policy fit
Do not assume that a continuous loop of prerecorded video is permitted or eligible for monetization in every case. The cited YouTube live-stream guidance does not settle how current policies apply to a particular loop, its content, or its channel. Check YouTube’s current rules for your material before streaming; this comparison cannot promise policy compliance or monetization.

A higher public-bandwidth figure alone is not a reason to select a VPS. Consider CPU availability, encoder support, sustained performance, server location, route quality, and any regional traffic quota as well as the bitrate you intend to send.
Test either setup before depending on it
- Set the intended output. Choose the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your video rather than evaluating the machine using a different workload.
- Check the upload path. On a PC, test the home connection’s sustained outbound capacity; for a VPS, assess the server’s outbound path and applicable regional terms. Leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends.
- Run the encoder with the intended content. Watch for encoding overload, interruptions, and unstable output. A plan’s published vCores or bandwidth does not replace this test.
- Start a test stream ahead of the real start. Review YouTube’s stream health and verify that picture and sound behave as expected. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Recheck after changes. Changing the video, output settings, server plan, or network can change the result; test the configuration you will actually use.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports insufficient or unstable upload | Available sustained upload, competing traffic, or route quality | Repeat an outbound test, reduce competing network use, and choose a bitrate the connection can sustain while preserving YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Encoder reports overload or the stream stutters | Encoding workload exceeds what the machine can sustain | Test the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; lower the workload if necessary. A VPS specification is not a benchmark. |
| Encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Stream key, ingest configuration, or connection settings | Check that the configured key and ingestion settings match the YouTube stream setup. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. |
| VPS data use approaches a regional limit | Location-specific monthly traffic quota | Confirm the quota for the exact VPS plan and location with OVHcloud before continuing or selecting that region. |
| Channel cannot start a live stream | Channel verification or a live-streaming restriction | Review YouTube’s eligibility requirements and channel status before troubleshooting the encoder. |
