For a small relaxation channel, start with a scheduled horizontal stream built around one specific atmosphere—such as a quiet rain room or a slow nighttime soundscape—rather than launching an interchangeable 24/7 loop. Use original or properly licensed audio and visuals, establish a dependable schedule, and expand to continuous streaming only if your reliability and channel analytics show that the extra uptime serves viewers. YouTube does not publish evidence that uninterrupted broadcasting performs better for small relaxation channels.
Choose a clear listener promise before choosing stream length
Define what a viewer should get from the stream, then make the title and description specific to that experience. “Quiet rain on a cabin window for reading” gives a clearer promise than a generic “relaxing music live.” A recognizable authored identity and meaningful variation help distinguish the channel’s work from repetitive or mass-produced material.
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams as well as other formats. Its July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material with little distinct value is ineligible under the existing policy; YouTube said the update clarified the policy rather than changing its reused-content policy. YouTube also warns: “If we cannot clearly tell that you made the content, monetization may be removed from your entire channel.” Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Start with scheduled sessions, then assess continuous streaming
Why a schedule is the practical starting point
A scheduled stream gives you a dependable cadence to maintain while you learn what your viewers use and when. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt in to notifications. When to test 24/7 operation
Consider continuous operation only after you can keep delivery reliable and have channel analytics indicating that additional availability benefits your audience. The official guidance does not compare scheduled sessions with 24/7 streaming for small relaxation channels, so there is no established best stream length or performance advantage to assume. Treat continuous uptime as an operating choice to test against your own audience and reliability data, not as a discovery shortcut.
Choose horizontal or vertical for the viewing experience
For longer ambient listening, horizontal is a sensible initial format when clickable links in the description or chat matter. YouTube documents different features for horizontal and vertical live streams: horizontal streams have live ad formats and clickable links, while vertical streams can appear in the Shorts feed but do not support live pre-roll and mid-roll ads or clickable links. Choose vertical when Shorts-feed exposure is a deliberate priority, and check YouTube’s current feature details before deciding. YouTube’s live-streaming tips explain the format differences.

Set up the stream and protect the rights to its content
- Choose a supported streaming method. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; the format does not require a particular hardware product. Check the current eligibility and setup steps in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide. The guide’s 90-day rule is an eligibility requirement—no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days—not a performance measure.
- Schedule a session and describe it accurately. Use a precise title and description that tell viewers what the soundscape is for and what they will hear. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, where viewers can choose to receive a notification.
- Use material you have the right to stream. Create the audio and visuals yourself or obtain the rights needed for this use. YouTube’s live-stream terms require providers to represent that they have the necessary rights to exploit their content, including applicable music licensing rights. Music being available on another service does not, by itself, establish permission to use it in a continuous YouTube stream. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and confirm your licenses cover the intended use.
- Review the stream after it starts. Check that the intended audio and visuals are playing and that the scheduled stream is behaving as expected before you build a longer operating routine around it.
Set realistic expectations for monetization
Eligible channels may earn from live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships. Eligibility is conditional, and YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Avoid promising uninterrupted ad-free listening if monetization is enabled: YouTube controls whether ad slots are served. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
