If OBS shows a black preview and a short local recording is also black, troubleshoot the scene, capture source, and VPS display session first—not Oracle Cloud firewall rules. If the preview and recording look right but viewers get no video or the connection drops, investigate the stream destination and network path instead. OBS sends its output to the selected streaming service; it does not relay the stream through OBS itself. The exact cause depends on your operating system, desktop session, source, OCI shape, and logs, so there is no single fix that applies to every VPS.
First determine what is actually black
Make a short local recording and compare it with the OBS preview. This separates a capture problem from an output or connectivity problem.
| What you see | Investigate first | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview and local recording are black | Scene and source visibility, capture method, display session, permissions, and graphics stack. | It does not show that OCI networking is broken. |
| Preview and local recording work, but the remote stream has no video | Configured destination, service state, authentication, outbound connectivity, and OBS logs. | It does not show that capture is broken. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or an unstable connection | Network capacity and stability to the streaming endpoint, and whether the configured bitrate is suitable. | It does not explain a black local preview. |
| Hardware encoder is unavailable | GPU shape, driver, OBS build, and encoder compatibility. | It does not tell you whether the capture source works. |
OBS’s Help Portal distinguishes connection and dropped-frame problems from capture issues. OBS’s capture troubleshooting guidance is a useful starting point for a black preview.
Check the scene, source, and display session
Verify the OBS source
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream and confirm it contains the intended source.
- Check that the source is enabled and visible in the Sources list. Confirm its properties point to the intended display or window.
- Test with a short local recording. If the recording is black too, stay on the capture branch until the local image works.
On a Linux VPS, display capture needs a usable display session that OBS can access. Determine whether the VM is running X11 or Wayland, how OBS is launched, and whether a remote desktop or virtual display is producing pixels visible to that OBS process. An SSH session by itself does not create a desktop to capture. The compatible capture path depends on the distribution and session; do not assume a display-capture source can see a desktop that is absent or belongs to another session. See the OBS Linux installation guidance for Linux prerequisites.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirm the graphics stack can initialize
OBS’s Linux guidance requires OpenGL 3.3 or later. Confirm OBS starts in the intended graphical session and can initialize the available graphics stack. If you use an OCI GPU shape, separately confirm that the shape was provisioned, your tenancy has the required quota or service limit, and the driver is configured for that GPU and image. Oracle’s Compute Shapes documentation covers shape availability and limits; its GPU workstation tutorial is an example configuration, not a universal OBS setup. OCI’s Platform Images information is relevant when checking image and driver compatibility.
A generic VPS should not be assumed to include a GPU. A GPU can help with supported rendering or encoding, but it cannot supply a desktop image if the capture source has no accessible display.

Separate capture from encoding
Fix the local preview before changing encoder settings. Capture produces the frames; an encoder compresses frames OBS already has. Selecting a hardware encoder cannot create a desktop source or make an inaccessible display visible. Once capture works, choose an encoder supported by the provisioned hardware and installed drivers. OBS documents hardware options such as NVENC in its hardware encoding guide.
Check network rules only for connection symptoms
If the preview and recording are correct but OBS cannot connect or reports dropped frames, verify the selected service or destination, its state, and the VPS’s outbound path. Oracle’s VCN troubleshooting guidance identifies three rule layers to check when relevant:

- Network security group rules.
- Subnet security lists.
- The operating system firewall; Oracle Linux images may use
firewalld.
Match any rule changes to the protocol and destination you actually use. Do not open broad ports speculatively to fix a black local preview; network rules cannot make a missing display produce pixels.
Review conflicts and OBS logs
Some security or firewall products can affect capture or connectivity. OBS lists possible software conflicts in its Known Application Conflicts guidance. Review the OBS log for source initialization, display or graphics, encoder, and connection errors. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell which change mattered.

If you are choosing an OCI VM configuration
There is no established best OCI shape for this symptom. Compare the configuration factors that determine whether OBS can both see an image and process it:
- Whether the shape includes the GPU capability you need.
- Whether the shape is available in your region and availability domain, and permitted by your tenancy limits.
- Whether the OS image and installed drivers are compatible.
- Whether the workload needs GPU rendering or hardware encoding.
- Whether an accessible display session exists, independently of the encoder.
OCI’s shape, GPU, and image documentation describes availability and configuration, but does not establish a shape recommendation or benchmark for OBS streaming.
