To keep a YouTube Live product demo running overnight with OBS, build and test a scene that repeats the intended demo, connect OBS to the correct YouTube encoder stream, and verify the preview, stream health, network and power setup before leaving it unattended. OBS does not make an overnight stream failure-proof: the computer, encoder and internet connection must keep working, and YouTube may limit DVR or archiving for long streams.
Choose what the demo will show
Start by deciding whether each pass through the demo should be identical or reflect something happening live. That choice determines the source to configure in OBS and what you need to test.
- Prerecorded media: Use this when the same prepared demonstration should repeat. Configure the media source or scene to return to the beginning, then watch it complete a full cycle to confirm the transition is clean.
- Live camera or product setup: Use this when the demonstration needs to show a real device or changing conditions. Confirm framing, lighting, focus and audio for the whole intended run.
- Computer capture: Use this to demonstrate software or a website. Close unrelated windows, silence notifications and make sure no private information will appear on screen.
OBS source-loop controls depend on the source and setup. Check the current OBS instructions for the media source you are using rather than assuming one universal loop setting. Whatever the source, verify that it returns to the intended opening state during a test.
Create or select the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the encoder stream for the demo. Set the event’s title, description, privacy and other audience-facing details before transmitting. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating and scheduling a stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Use the credentials for the specific event you intend to run. YouTube describes the key as analogous to a password and address; keep it private, and do not show it in a public scene, screenshot or recording. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use RTMPS where supported by your encoder and setup. YouTube recommends encrypted ingestion in its encoder settings guidance.
Match OBS output to your upload connection
There is no single correct bitrate for every overnight demo. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate together, using YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec and output format in its encoder settings and bitrate table. A higher-quality setting is useful only if the connection can sustain it without interruptions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Available upload capacity can change when other people or devices share the connection. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break the stream; see its streaming tips.
If Ethernet is available for both the computer and network equipment, a wired connection is a practical option to reduce reliance on Wi-Fi. It does not increase the ISP’s upload capacity or prevent power failures, upstream congestion or encoder problems.

Preflight before leaving the stream unattended
Do a full rehearsal ahead of the overnight run, using representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends setting up early, starting the encoder before the event, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality, and checking local archive files. Its live streaming tips also discuss testing a backup encoder when one has actually been configured.
- Check the scene: Watch the demo return to its opening state. Look for unintended dialogs, desktop notifications, blank frames or abrupt transitions.
- Check sound: Listen to representative sections and confirm the audio level and content are appropriate throughout the intended cycle.
- Start OBS early: Begin sending the encoder signal with enough time to inspect it in YouTube Live Control Room before the scheduled event or public start.
- Inspect preview and stream health: Confirm the expected picture and sound appear, and review YouTube’s status messages. Its live stream metrics guide explains the available health and status information.
- Check network and power: Make sure the computer will not sleep or shut down during the run, and that the network path is stable. Plan for the limits of your actual equipment and connection; a rehearsal cannot guarantee an unattended stream will remain uninterrupted.
- Verify local recording if needed: If you need your own copy, confirm recording is enabled and that the local file is present and growing before leaving. A local recording is separate from YouTube’s archive.
- Use backup only if tested: A single OBS computer does not provide encoder failover by itself. If you have configured a second encoder path, test the switch before relying on it; YouTube’s tips describe checking whether the player moves to a backup when the primary is stopped.
Plan for long-stream DVR and archives
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while its help pages caution that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check the planned duration and the current event settings before promising viewers they can rewind or expect a complete YouTube archive. See Turn on DVR on live streams and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. If the demo must run beyond that threshold, consider whether a separate local recording is required.

Troubleshooting an overnight OBS stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | Incorrect stream URL or key, or the encoder has not started sending. | Check that OBS uses the URL and key for the selected event, then confirm the encoder is sending and inspect Live Control Room status. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health reports a problem | Insufficient upload headroom, changing network demand or a disrupted connection. | Compare the selected bitrate with sustained upload capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. |
| The demo goes blank or does not restart | The selected source or scene is not configured to repeat as intended. | Test the source through a complete cycle in OBS and adjust its loop or restart behavior according to the current instructions for that source. |
| Viewers cannot rewind the full stream or the archive is missing | The stream exceeded the duration for which YouTube documents automatic archiving or may limit DVR. | Check YouTube’s current archive and DVR behavior for the event; keep a separate local recording if you need a copy. |
| The stream stops while the room is unattended | Possible computer sleep or shutdown, loss of power, network interruption or encoder failure. | Review OBS and YouTube status, the computer’s power settings and the network path. A backup encoder helps only if it has been deliberately configured and tested. |
