You can run the encoder on a computer, use a cloud streaming service such as StreamNeo, or use dedicated hardware. A playlist by itself does not create a livestream: an encoder must send the program feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key.
What an always-on podcast channel does—and does not do
A continuous channel gives listeners a radio-style way to discover stories by joining the broadcast at any time. It is different from an ordinary upload or a podcast RSS feed: the encoder sends audio and video continuously to YouTube, which presents it as a live stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes sending the feed, checking the preview, and going live where required. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
A live rotation is not a dependable episode archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams longer than that. Keep the original masters and publish episodes separately if listeners need to find a story, start at its beginning, or replay it later. The YouTube Live Streaming API also describes a 24/7 broadcast alongside a separate video for an item that occurs during the broadcast. Google’s API guide was last updated September 14, 2026.
Prepare the archive before you choose an encoder
Check rights for every element
Make an inventory of each episode’s master audio, script, music, sound effects, artwork, guest or performer agreements, and inserted clips. Confirm that the rights you hold cover YouTube distribution and continuous public performance in the territories where you plan to make the channel available. The platform cannot tell you what your production agreements grant; check the actual contracts and licenses.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If a match is detected, it may replace the live image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If a licensed element is registered in Content ID, ask its rights owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist before launch. A license alone may not prevent an interruption. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after they end. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Design a feed people can follow midway through
Choose a visual that remains useful while the audio plays: for example, show artwork with the current episode title, a simple schedule, or restrained animation. Put episodes in a deliberate sequence—complete stories or themed blocks—and make the order legible to someone who joins halfway through. This is a programming choice, not a YouTube technical requirement.

Choose how to keep the feed running
The relevant operational choices are a computer and software encoder, a cloud service, or dedicated streaming hardware. YouTube lists OBS as no-charge, open-source software; Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; and AJA HELO Plus hardware with PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. These are available approaches, not guarantees of uptime or recommendations for every budget. YouTube’s documentation does not provide a like-for-like comparison of their prices or reliability. Check YouTube’s encoder guide and verify current features, limits, and service details with each provider before committing.
| Approach | What it suits | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Computer and software encoder, such as OBS | Creators who want control over playback and visual composition. | The computer, encoder configuration, and internet connection must remain available. YouTube’s listing does not promise 24/7 reliability. |
| Cloud service | Creators who want to run a prerecorded rotation without keeping a dedicated local computer on. YouTube lists Gyre in this category. | Check the provider’s current price, media limits, restart and recovery behavior, and service status; these details are not established by YouTube’s listing. |
| Dedicated hardware, such as AJA HELO Plus | Creators seeking a purpose-built route; YouTube describes PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. | Verify the current feature availability, setup, and workflow before buying. It is a specialist hardware option. |
Compare the choices by local operating burden, scheduling and recovery controls, the visual complexity you need, total cost, and how easily you can monitor a long-running feed. No official source cited here establishes a numerical cost or uptime advantage for one route over another.

Set up and start the YouTube livestream
- Enable live streaming in advance. Complete YouTube’s live-stream activation for the channel before the launch date. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Follow the encoder workflow in Studio to obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Configure your encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key, then select the prepared media and visual feed. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Start sending the feed. Start the encoder and check that YouTube receives the content and displays a usable preview. YouTube creates the live page when the encoder starts sending content.
- Go live when prompted. For a scheduled stream, confirm the preview and use YouTube Studio’s Go live step. Monitor the live page after launch to catch playback or rights interruptions.
The exact controls can change, so use YouTube’s current encoder instructions for the Studio workflow shown for your channel.
Keep episode discovery separate from the continuous rotation
A listener who arrives during an episode may not know its title or be able to start at the beginning. Publish episode-level videos or maintain a podcast archive alongside the live channel, with clear titles and organization. Keep the source files even if the live stream appears in YouTube’s archive: the automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not to a continuous broadcast of unlimited duration.

YouTube’s RSS delivery option can create static-art videos from selected audio-first podcast episodes and automatically upload future episodes. It is an episode-delivery route, not a live broadcast. Availability is region-limited; back-catalog episodes added through RSS do not notify subscribers, and changing the audio in the feed does not silently update a published episode. YouTube’s instructions also say imported podcast content cannot contain advertisements; sponsorships, endorsements, and branded content must be disclosed through the relevant settings and comply with policy. Review the current regional availability, episode selection, and re-upload workflow before using it. Details are in YouTube’s RSS podcast guidance.

Copyright can interrupt a technically healthy stream
Encoder setup does not clear rights. YouTube’s live matching may trigger a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination when third-party content remains in the feed. Coordinate Content ID allowlisting with rights owners when needed; keep in mind that an ended stream’s archive can receive a claim later. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and resolve rights questions before launch.

Monetization depends on the channel’s substance
YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. It expects original, authentic material and says repetitive, mass-produced, or interchangeable content may be ineligible. Its examples allow a recurring-character series when episodes have distinct storylines or focus, so fiction reruns are not automatically disqualified; the channel as a whole still needs to demonstrate meaningful variation and value. YouTube evaluates factors such as the channel theme, high-watch-time videos, metadata, and About section. No policy page can establish in advance that a particular archive will be accepted or monetized. The policy clarification dated July 15, 2025, addresses repetitive or mass-produced material under the inauthentic-content policy. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common launch problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature ahead of launch and allow time for it to become available.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the stream created in YouTube Studio. If you shared the key, replace it and update the encoder configuration.
- The live feed is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: Investigate a third-party-content match, including music, clips, or other licensed material. Contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; having a license may not be sufficient to prevent a live interruption.
- The long-running broadcast is not available as a complete replay: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours only. Retain masters and publish episode-level videos rather than relying on the continuous stream for durable access.
- A podcast episode does not appear as a livestream through RSS: RSS delivery creates episode videos, not a continuous live feed. Check regional availability and the feed’s episode selection and upload workflow.
