To relay a podcast continuously from a Linux desktop, use OBS Studio to send your program audio and a static visual to YouTube through the Live Control Room. Configure YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, test the connection and audio, and enable OBS automatic reconnect. That can help with some dropped connections, but it does not guarantee 24/7 operation: the desktop, power, network, OBS process, YouTube enforcement and archive limits all need separate consideration.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires the channel to be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
  • A Linux desktop running OBS Studio, with a reliable internet connection and enough capacity for your chosen scene and encoding settings.
  • The podcast audio you intend to relay, plus a visual such as show artwork that you have permission to use. Add a microphone only if you also need live speech.
  • Rights to stream and archive every element in the program, including music, clips, artwork and other third-party material.

OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland among its Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting those basic requirements does not establish that a computer can handle a particular resolution, scene complexity or uninterrupted workload. Check the OBS system requirements and run a real test on the machine you plan to use.

Set up a YouTube podcast stream in OBS

1. Install OBS Studio on Linux

Follow the OBS Project’s Linux installation guidance. It recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and provides a PPA-based installation route for Ubuntu. Installation details can vary by distribution; use the instructions for your system rather than assuming one package command applies everywhere.

2. Prepare the podcast audio and visual

In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Add the prepared podcast program audio as an audio input and add a suitable still image, such as licensed show artwork, as the visual. If the recording is a file, configure OBS to play that source and verify that it repeats or advances as intended for your program. Add a microphone input only if a host will speak live. Use the OBS preview and audio meters to confirm that the image appears and the intended audio is being captured; avoid monitoring the same sound through multiple active inputs, which can create echoes or doubling.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS supports audio inputs and scene-based sources; it does not make the rights status or continuity of your podcast audio automatic. Listen through a representative segment before going live, including transitions and the end of any file or playlist.

3. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Create a new stream or select a stream setup you can reuse. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there.
  3. In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service if available, or choose a custom streaming server and enter the YouTube server URL. Paste the stream key into the key field.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that let an encoder send a feed; anyone with access to the key may be able to stream to your channel. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

For the current connection workflow, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream-key settings.

4. Choose encoder settings and test the feed

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP ingest option. Use the server address supplied by YouTube and select RTMPS when the service or custom-server options offer it. For the video encoder, YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; for audio, it supports AAC or MP3. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations applicable to your stream.

There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate and network. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the output you intend to send, then verify that your sustained upload capacity has headroom above it. A connection that only barely matches the encoder bitrate can become unstable when household or office traffic rises. For an audio-first podcast with a static image, avoid choosing a demanding video mode without a reason; the actual encoding load still depends on your scene and hardware.

Before relying on the broadcast, start a private or otherwise controlled test if your channel setup permits it. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health information, listen for clean and continuous audio, verify that the visual is present, and test with representative movement or transitions. A short test can reveal configuration mistakes, but it cannot prove that the setup will remain healthy for days.

Keep the desktop stream running—and understand its limits

What OBS automatic reconnect can do

OBS documents an automatic reconnect option in its output settings. Enable it, set a retry interval and retry count appropriate to the controls shown in your installed version, and deliberately test a brief network interruption before launch. Reconnection can help when a connection drops temporarily, but it is not an uptime guarantee and may not recover every failure.

OBS running on a desktop is still dependent on that desktop. A crashed OBS process, operating-system update or restart, power failure, lost internet access, or a YouTube interruption may stop the stream. The sources above describe encoder controls, not a complete Linux recovery service that relaunches OBS after every failure. If you configure startup automation or a process supervisor yourself, test its behavior after reboot and process termination rather than assuming it works unattended.

Monitor the stream and plan for intervention

Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the program audio is still playing. Decide who can respond if the desktop or connection fails, and keep the stream key and recovery steps accessible only to trusted operators. If the broadcast is important, test failure cases separately: brief network loss, OBS closure, desktop restart and power interruption. A UPS may help with some short power disruptions, but the right capacity depends on your equipment and required runtime.

Know what happens to the archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous broadcast exceeding 12 hours will produce one complete replay. If a full recording matters, arrange and test a separate local recording workflow, check available disk space, and verify the resulting files. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance describes this limit.

Clear rights before leaving a podcast live

Technical permission to send a stream is not permission to use everything in it. YouTube’s terms require the provider to hold the rights needed for live and archived content, including applicable music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the video with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even when you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the material to remain available.

Check rights for the entire loop, not just the podcast’s spoken recording: theme music, ads, guest clips, background tracks, images and any content inserted between episodes can each have separate terms. YouTube’s Terms of Service and copyright guidance are useful starting points, but they do not replace your licence agreements or legal advice.

When a Linux desktop is the wrong fit

OBS is a practical, visible way to run a YouTube encoder from Linux, especially when you want to inspect the scene and intervene directly. It also means the computer, local power and network must remain available. A command-line or service-managed pipeline can be engineered for unattended operation, but it brings its own work: process supervision, restart-after-boot configuration, key handling, audio continuity, logging, recording storage and health checks. Do not treat a generic Linux command as a tested or guaranteed 24/7 deployment.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want the desktop to be the thing keeping the broadcast alive, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you upload at up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
