For an always-on YouTube podcast, plan captions in two stages: captions for people watching live, and a separate caption track for each replay. YouTube’s live automatic captions do not carry over to the replay; YouTube generates new captions for the archived video, which can differ. Check eligibility before relying on live automation, and review the episode captions in YouTube Studio after each broadcast.

Choose how to caption the live stream

YouTube documents two routes for live captions: automatic captions for eligible streams, and captions sent through a supported professional workflow. Neither route removes the need to check captions on the replay.

Method What to expect What it requires
YouTube live automatic captions English-only under YouTube’s current guidance; availability is being rolled out to eligible English channels. Captions must be enabled for each stream, and the stream must use normal latency. Live captions do not remain on the replay. YouTube Help Feature availability for your channel, normal latency, and activation in that stream’s settings.
Professional captions YouTube documents captions embedded in the video using 608/708 formats, or captions sent by supported software over HTTP. YouTube’s guidance says it currently supports one embedded 608/708 caption track. YouTube Help Compatible encoder or caption software and a configured caption feed. The right setup depends on your equipment and caption provider.

If the live automatic-caption option is unavailable, the stream is not in English, or you need a professional caption feed, arrange the supported professional workflow before going live. YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in its guidance; confirm current compatibility and availability with the vendor before choosing one.

Set up automatic captions for an eligible stream

  1. Open the individual stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. Automatic live captions are enabled per stream, not with a single channel-wide switch.
  2. Use normal latency. YouTube’s current automatic-caption guidance specifies normal latency for eligible streams.
  3. Turn on Closed captions and select Automatic captions. The option may not appear for every channel or stream while YouTube’s eligibility and rollout conditions apply.
  4. Check captions during the broadcast. Listen and watch for missed or misrecognized speech, especially names, specialized terms, accents, dialects, and speech affected by background noise.

YouTube warns that automatic-caption quality varies and encourages creators to review and correct errors. Clear speech and low background noise can help avoid some recognition problems, but automatic captions still need review.

Prepare a separate caption workflow for every episode

Live captions and replay captions are different outputs. YouTube states that live automatic captions “won’t remain on the video” after the stream ends. It generates captions for the archived video through its VOD process, and those captions may differ from the live version. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning

  1. Open the archived video in YouTube Studio and check its subtitle track. Do this even if viewers saw captions during the broadcast.
  2. Review and correct the generated captions. Fix omissions, names, technical terms, and punctuation where needed. YouTube’s subtitle tools also let creators type or paste a transcript and have timings set automatically. YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions
  3. Use a prepared transcript or professional captions when accuracy is important. Machine-generated text can misrepresent speech; live automation is not a substitute for checking the episode archive.

Keep the recording safe on a continuous broadcast

Captioning the episode only helps if the replay is captured. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

  • Check that the intended replay exists before spending time editing its captions.

Audio setup and caption accuracy

Good speech capture can reduce one source of recognition difficulty, but a microphone does not create captions or replace proofreading. YouTube identifies poor sound quality and unrecognized speech as possible reasons automatic captions may be missing or inaccurate. Choose audio equipment for your production needs; no specific microphone model is established here as a caption-accuracy solution.

Troubleshooting live and episode captions

Problem Likely explanation What to do
Automatic captions are missing from the live stream The feature may not be available to the channel or stream, the stream may not meet eligibility conditions, or captions may not have been enabled for that stream. Check the stream’s Closed captions settings and YouTube’s current eligibility guidance. If the option is unavailable or you need a different language/workflow, configure a supported professional caption feed.
Live captions are present but disappear from the replay This is expected: live automatic captions do not remain on the video. Check the archived video’s VOD captions in Studio, then review and edit them.
Replay captions differ from what viewers saw live YouTube generates a new caption output for the VOD, and it may differ from live captions. Review the episode subtitle track rather than assuming the live version was retained.
Captions omit words or misrender names Automatic recognition can be affected by pronunciation, accent, dialect, background noise, or sound quality. Correct the text in Studio or use a prepared transcript or professional captions for the episode.
A very long broadcast has no archive YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Maintain a local recording backup and consider shorter broadcast units if an archive is essential.
