This brings the encoder back after many unexpected exits; it does not fix a persistent input, network, YouTube, or music-rights problem. You must still check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
What systemd can—and cannot—restart
Systemd supervises a local process. If the encoder exits unexpectedly, the service can launch it again. That may restore the encoder connection after a process crash, but it cannot ensure the playlist is readable, repair an unavailable network, make YouTube accept a stream, or authorize the music.
A YouTube encoder stream also requires an eligible channel and the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A service marked active only tells you about the local process; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving healthy audio.
Choose a restart policy
| Setting | Behavior | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
Restarts after an unclean exit, signal, or timeout, but not after a clean exit. | The encoder should normally keep running and a clean exit should remain stopped. |
Restart=always |
Restarts after a clean exit as well as failure. | The process is expected to run continuously even if it exits with a success status. |
Both policies are subject to systemd’s start-rate limiting: repeated rapid failures can cause the unit to stop retrying. A service explicitly stopped by an operator is not restarted by its configured policy. Restart behavior is separate from boot enablement; use systemctl enable if it should start when the machine boots. See systemd.service for the service directives and restart semantics.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create a systemd service for the encoder
The example below is a skeleton, not a universal FFmpeg command. Replace paths, account, input, codecs, output format, and ingest details with values appropriate to your setup and YouTube’s current requirements. Keep the encoder in the foreground so systemd supervises the process it launched.
- Create a restricted service account and working directory. The example assumes a user named
streamcan read the source files in/srv/music-stream. Confirm permissions and paths on your system. - Protect the stream key. Do not put a real key in a public example or a world-readable unit file. Use a root-readable environment file or a credentials mechanism supported by your host’s systemd version. If using an environment file, restrict it to root, for example with mode
0600, and ensure the encoder can receive the key without exposing it in logs or process listings. - Write the service unit. Save a file such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-music.servicewith an adapted structure like this:
[Unit]
Description=YouTube music livestream encoder
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/music-stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-music.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/music-stream/playlist-or-input -c:a aac -f flv rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The paths and command arguments are illustrative placeholders. In particular, the input, any video source or still image, looping behavior, output codecs, ingest endpoint and secret handling must match your encoder and the requirements shown in Live Control Room. The available configuration guidance does not validate this FFmpeg invocation or establish that it will loop a particular playlist correctly. Verify the exact command independently before relying on it.

A protected environment file is only useful if your chosen command can safely consume the key. Do not substitute a literal secret into the example or expose it in a public repository. Use the secret-handling approach supported by your systemd version and encoder.
- Tell systemd to reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable and start the service:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-music.service. - Check the local process and logs:
systemctl status youtube-music.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-music.service -f. Look for input, permission, authentication, and connection errors. - Verify delivery in YouTube: Open Live Control Room and check that the stream preview and health indicator show the expected incoming feed. Do not treat a running service as confirmation that viewers can hear it.
Set the delay and diagnose repeated failures
RestartSec=10s in the example asks systemd to wait 10 seconds before an automatic restart. Choose a delay suitable for your deployment. A short delay can produce rapid repeated attempts when the underlying cause persists; systemd’s rate limiting can then stop further starts.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Unit fails immediately: Check
systemctl statusand the journal for a bad executable path, invalid arguments, missing files, or permission errors. Fix the underlying error before expecting a restart policy to help. - Service runs but the feed is absent or unhealthy: Check the encoder’s output and logs, stream URL and key, network path, and Live Control Room status. A local active state is not a YouTube health check.
- Service repeatedly starts and stops: Find the first meaningful error in
journalctl -u youtube-music.service. A missing input, invalid key, rights restriction, full disk, or unavailable network can cause every retry to fail. Increasing the delay alone will not repair it. - It starts manually but not after reboot: Confirm the unit has an
[Install]section withWantedBy=multi-user.target, then enable it withsystemctl enable youtube-music.service. Check that required files and secrets are available at boot to the service account. - You stopped it intentionally: A configured restart policy does not override an explicit operator stop. Start it again with
systemctl start youtube-music.servicewhen you want it running.
For a long-running stream, monitor both the service and YouTube’s stream health. If failures need attention, arrange alerting and a deliberate retry strategy instead of assuming that automatic restarts can resolve every outage.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the operator; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you have a licence, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See Copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights, and must meet applicable licensing, registration, notification, or approval requirements for the stream territory.
“Indian music” does not identify the recording, composition, performers, rights holders, or territories covered by a licence. Owning a file, buying a song, or crediting its artist does not by itself establish livestream rights. Confirm rights for each recording and territory with the relevant rights holders. Systemd may relaunch an encoder after a process exits, but it cannot remove a YouTube restriction or supply missing rights. This is not legal advice and does not clear any particular catalogue.
