Run two independent FFmpeg processes on one Linode: give each process its own prerecorded video, loop it, and send it to a separate YouTube Live event using that event’s stream URL and key. The main constraints are the server’s sustained CPU and memory capacity, outbound bandwidth, and Linode’s current transfer allowance. The exact two-process setup is not validated by the cited documentation, so test both streams under load before relying on them.
How the two-stream setup works
Each FFmpeg process handles one video and one YouTube event. The processes run independently, so a failure in one need not stop the other—but only if you supervise and monitor them separately. An RTMP relay is not needed for two different loop videos going to two YouTube events; it is more relevant when redistributing one incoming feed to multiple destinations.
This method sends prerecorded video as a live stream. It does not turn a camera feed into a loop, and the two streams need distinct event credentials. Confirm that your channel can run the intended events concurrently before configuring the server.
Prepare YouTube Live events and stream keys
- Create or select an event for each broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the first event, then do the same for the second.
- Copy the matching ingest details. For each event, copy its stream URL and associated stream key into that process’s configuration. Do not swap keys between events.
- Protect the keys. Treat stream keys as credentials: keep them out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the corresponding process.
YouTube’s workflow asks creators to enter the server URL and key in their encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.

Choose input files and output settings
Check each video before streaming
Use one compatible local video file per process. Confirm that each file contains the intended audio and video, plays correctly, and has enough duration for the planned loop. A stream-copy command can avoid re-encoding, but only when the source streams and container are suitable for the selected output. If they are not, configure FFmpeg to encode to a supported format and allow for the extra CPU load.
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Its stated keyframe guidance is: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Audio guidance lists AAC or MP3, stereo at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
For the listed H.264 recommendations, YouTube specifies 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30. Its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 6 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that every source needs or can sustain those rates. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers; check the official encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when setting up because guidance can change.

Run two FFmpeg loop processes
The following is a configuration pattern, not a universal command: input compatibility, codecs, and event URLs vary. StreamNeo’s FFmpeg example illustrates the loop flags -re and -stream_loop -1, and stream copy with -c copy when the media is suitable. Build and test each process against its own event before running both continuously.

Record the input path, intended output settings, YouTube ingest URL, and matching key. Keep credentials protected.
- Start and validate the first process. Use FFmpeg’s real-time input reading and repeat the file indefinitely. Confirm that the event receives both picture and sound and that Live Control Room reports healthy stream status.
- Start and validate the second process independently. Point it at the second file and second event credentials. Confirm its picture, sound, and health without assuming the first process’s success proves the second is working.
- Arrange supervision and alerts. Use separate process supervision and health checks so one exit is visible and does not silently leave an event offline. Choose and test a restart mechanism and an external alert path; the cited guidance does not establish a particular supervisor configuration or uptime guarantee.
- Run a sustained two-stream test. Monitor both YouTube stream-health panels along with Linode CPU, memory, outbound traffic, and dropped frames. Test what happens after an FFmpeg exit and a network interruption before depending on the setup.
YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. A static or silent test may miss problems that appear with the actual content.
Plan bandwidth, transfer, and server capacity
Estimate concurrent outbound bitrate
The server must send both streams at once. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates, two 720p30 streams total about 16 Mbps of video bitrate; two 1080p30 streams total about 28 Mbps. Those totals exclude audio and protocol overhead. The equivalent AV1/H.265 totals at those frame rates are about 12 Mbps for two 720p30 streams and 20 Mbps for two 1080p30 streams.

Estimate monthly transfer
For a rough decimal-GB transfer estimate, multiply the combined Mbps by 0.45 and by the number of streaming hours. For example, 16 Mbps streamed for 720 hours is approximately 5,184 GB before audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other account traffic. This is a planning calculation, not a Linode plan quote. Check the selected plan’s current transfer allowance and billing terms before committing to a resolution.
Size from measurements, not a rule of thumb
Linode’s RTMP guide says a single stream may fit a 1 GB instance and suggests at least 4 GB for retransmitting to several sites or converting formats. That is broad guidance, not a benchmark for two separate loop encoders. Copying compatible encoded media should use less CPU than transcoding, but the actual load depends on the files, output settings, and instance. Measure a sustained run and observe CPU, memory, egress, and dropped frames before choosing a size. See Linode’s RTMP server guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A Linode Community respondent described one operator’s experience: about 10 Mbps outbound for a 4K stream and about 20 Mbps after adding a second, then about 4.03 Mbps combined after lowering both inputs to 480p. That is an anecdotal report, not a benchmark for other instances or media. The answer also quoted plan transfer limits and overage rates from roughly four years before 2026-10-03; those historical amounts should not be treated as current prices or allowances. The practical takeaway is to measure both outputs and check today’s plan terms. Read the Linode Community discussion.

Troubleshoot common failures
- One event stays offline: Check that its FFmpeg process is running and that its configured URL and key belong to that event. Inspect the process output for connection errors, then verify the event’s Live Control Room status.
- Video arrives but audio does not: Confirm that the source contains an audio stream and that the chosen output uses an audio codec and settings accepted by YouTube. Test with representative sound, not just a silent sample.
- Stream health reports problems or frames drop: Check the process logs, source playback, CPU use, and available outbound capacity. Compare the actual rate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure the keyframe interval does not exceed four seconds.
- Both streams degrade when started together: Measure combined egress and system load. Reduce output resolution or bitrate, avoid unnecessary transcoding where stream copy is compatible, or use a larger instance after checking current plan terms.
- A process exits and the event stops: Check the exit reason and arrange tested process supervision, health checks, and alerting. Automatic restart alone does not prove the stream recovered; confirm the event is receiving media again.
- Transfer use is higher than expected: Recalculate from the combined bitrate and actual streamed hours, then account for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other traffic. Check the plan’s current allowance rather than relying on old community figures.
Choose between FFmpeg, a relay, and a managed loop service
Two direct FFmpeg processes on Linode offer control over inputs and output settings, but you manage the server, updates, process recovery, monitoring, storage, and egress. A relay is useful when one incoming feed must be forwarded to multiple destinations; it still has to send a copy to each endpoint and may need more resources if it transcodes. A desktop OBS setup can make sense when graphical controls and an active desktop session are desired. A managed loop service shifts server operations to a vendor, so compare its stream count, supported quality, storage, recovery, and current terms against your requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the #1 managed option to consider here: it keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the same plan supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
