To reduce Linode costs for a nonstop YouTube livestream, first find out whether compute or outbound transfer is driving the bill. Record your instance plan and region, CPU and memory use under representative load, monthly transfer, stream bitrate, and every destination receiving the feed. Then compare the full setup with current regional pricing before resizing the server or changing quality. There is no universal cheapest plan: rates and included transfer vary, and current plan-specific allowances must be checked in your Linode account and the official pricing tools.

Start with the bill and usage data

Use your account’s billing and monitoring data to identify the cost you can actually change. Note the instance’s plan and region, the dates in the billing period, outbound transfer used so far, and CPU and memory behavior while the stream is running. Also list the stream’s configured bitrate and all destinations receiving it.

  • Instance and region: Record the current plan and where it runs. Pricing is region-sensitive; check the current Akamai Cloud pricing page and use the Akamai Cloud calculator for the relevant region.
  • Transfer: Compare the account’s measured outbound usage with the included allowance and any applicable overage shown for your current plan. Do not infer today’s allowance or charges from older plan tables or forum posts.
  • Compute: Observe CPU and memory during normal operation, including reconnects or other routine work. A low average alone may not describe peak load or the capacity needed for reliable recovery.
  • Architecture: Distinguish a direct feed to YouTube from a relay that forwards to more than one destination. Count the relay’s compute and outbound traffic as part of the bill.

The calculator can estimate hourly and monthly costs, but your account’s current billing details are needed to establish the transfer allowance and any overage applicable to your setup. Compare like-for-like regions and availability needs rather than treating one displayed rate as universal.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 livestream use?

For a continuous stream over a 30-day month, a useful decimal estimate is GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324. This is arithmetic based on bitrate and elapsed time, not a published Akamai or YouTube usage statistic.

Continuous bitrate Approximate traffic in 30 days Context
1 Mbps 324 GB Baseline calculation, before overhead or other traffic
4 Mbps 1,296 GB Corresponds to YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps
10 Mbps 3,240 GB Corresponds to YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps

These estimates exclude protocol overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, and differences in billing-period length. Use the actual configured bitrate and billing dates for a closer estimate, then validate it against interface and account usage. YouTube’s recommendations are encoder-input guidance, not a statement about your Linode plan’s included transfer or a guarantee of the quality viewers will see.

Reduce bitrate only after testing the picture

A lower encoder bitrate can reduce traffic sent out by a Linode relay, but it also changes the feed YouTube receives. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers; that downstream processing does not make the encoder’s input quality irrelevant.

YouTube’s official encoder settings documentation says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Its H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Treat these as starting points for configuring the encoder, not as a reason to lower an existing stream without checking the result.

  1. Record the current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval so you can restore them if necessary.
  2. Change only the setting needed to test a lower traffic target. Keep the stream on a supported configuration, including CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
  3. Run a representative test and inspect YouTube’s stream health and the resulting picture, especially during motion or other visually demanding sections.
  4. Keep the change only if the picture meets your needs and the stream remains stable; compare subsequent account transfer data over a comparable billing interval.

Right-size the VM using observed load

Compare measured CPU and memory use during representative nonstop operation with current plans and prices for the same region. Resize only when the workload gives you a reason to: a stream that works at low average utilization still needs enough headroom to handle real peaks and recover from interruptions without becoming unstable.

Akamai’s current pricing and calculator are the appropriate places to compare the available options. An older Linode RTMP guide describes a relay architecture, but its example VM size is not current sizing advice. There is not enough current plan-specific information here to name a lowest-cost instance or guarantee that a particular smaller plan will run your stream.

Keep or remove a relay based on the whole architecture

A relay may make sense when one feed from your home or studio connection is forwarded to multiple platforms: the Linode guide describes this arrangement as a way to reduce duplicate uploads on the local connection. That does not establish that the relay lowers your Linode bill.

  • One YouTube destination: Compare the direct encoder-to-YouTube path with the relay’s VM cost and its outbound traffic. A relay can add cost rather than reduce it.
  • Multiple destinations: Include the value of sending one source feed to the relay instead of uploading separately from your local connection, while still counting the relay’s compute and outbound traffic.
  • Any design: Recheck the bill and measured transfer after a change. A theoretical reduction in source uploads is not proof of a reduction in total costs.

Use Object Storage and CDN for the right job

Linode Object Storage documentation describes using stored media as an origin for delivery through Akamai CDN in streaming and data-delivery scenarios. That is a separate use case from the live encoder-to-YouTube ingest path: the documentation does not establish that Object Storage reduces the cost of sending a live feed to YouTube. Consider storage and CDN costs only if your project also stores or distributes media assets.

A practical cost-reduction checklist

  1. Write down the VM plan, region, billing-period dates, CPU and memory profile, stream bitrate, and every destination.
  2. Use account billing data to determine whether compute, outbound transfer, or another charge is driving the bill.
  3. Estimate continuous traffic with bitrate in Mbps × 324 for a 30-day month, then compare the estimate with actual usage and the plan’s current allowance.
  4. Check current regional pricing and calculator estimates for the existing setup and any proposed change.
  5. Test any bitrate reduction against YouTube stream health and the picture before keeping it.
  6. Resize compute only after observing representative load, and include restart and recovery behavior in the decision.
  7. Keep a relay only when its role justifies its compute and outbound traffic in the full architecture.
  8. After changing a setting or plan, recheck account usage and costs over a comparable period.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that plays uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating a Linode encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
