For a one-off prerecorded YouTube event, Linode is the more direct option if you want to run and maintain your own Linux playback or relay setup. Google Cloud Live Stream API is worth considering when you need managed encoding and distribution and can account for its usage-based charges. They are not equivalent services: Linode supplies a virtual machine, while Live Stream API manages parts of a live-encoding and distribution workflow. Neither removes the need to schedule the YouTube event and send it a compatible feed.
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than stage a single event, the architecture and cost question changes; StreamNeo is a separate cloud service built for that use case.
What each service does in this workflow
| Option | What you manage | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Linode (Akamai Cloud Compute) | A virtual machine and the software that plays or relays the video, plus security, monitoring, updates, and recovery. | You want control over a Linux host and have the technical capacity to operate it. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | You configure a managed encoding and distribution workflow, then manage its lifecycle and usage charges. | You need managed live encoding or distribution features and the corresponding usage model suits the event. |
| A direct encoder/source feed | A compatible source process that can reliably send the prerecorded file as a live feed to YouTube. | The workflow is simple enough that an extra VM relay or managed distribution layer is unnecessary. |
For either cloud route, YouTube’s event remains a separate part of the setup. Its documented workflow is to schedule a stream in Live Control Room and configure the encoder/source with the event’s server URL and stream key. Viewers can be shown a preview before the operator starts the event. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes the workflow.
Choose based on event shape, not brand
Choose Linode when you want a configurable host
Akamai’s guide demonstrates a self-managed pattern using NGINX with RTMP support: an incoming stream reaches the server, and push directives can forward it to destination ingest endpoints. The guide discusses OBS and YouTube, but it is not an out-of-the-box scheduler for turning a stored file into an automatically timed YouTube event. You still need a playback/source process and a way to start it at the right time. Akamai’s NGINX/RTMP tutorial was published May 21, 2021, targets Ubuntu 20.04, and should be treated as an architectural example rather than current universal installation instructions.

The guide’s sizing suggestions—1 GB for its single-stream example and at least 4 GB for some multi-destination or transcoding cases—are dated provider guidance, not guarantees for a current workload. Measure the actual playback, encoding, and destination requirements. Akamai now lists accelerated VPU instances for video processing, live streaming, and video-on-demand transcoding; that does not mean a VPU is necessary simply to relay an already-encoded file. Akamai’s compute instance documentation describes its compute types.
Consider Live Stream API when managed encoding or distribution matters
Google Cloud Live Stream API offers managed live encoding and distribution. Its documented workflow supports distributing outputs to remote endpoints over RTMP or SRT and provides lifecycle operations for starting and stopping distributions and channels. It is not itself a YouTube event scheduler: create and configure the YouTube event separately, then use that event’s current ingest details for the output destination. Google’s distribution documentation covers remote outputs and lifecycle operations.

Do not confuse input protocol advice with the YouTube delivery protocol. Google recommends SRT rather than RTMP for API source input when the encoder supports it, citing recovery and error-correction features. YouTube’s own encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for ingest. Choose a protocol separately for the API input and the YouTube-facing output. Google’s input documentation covers source input; YouTube’s encoder settings covers YouTube ingest.
Skip an extra cloud layer if the source can send reliably
If a suitable encoder or source host can read the file and send a stable, correctly configured feed directly to YouTube, a Linode relay or Google managed distribution layer may add complexity without solving a requirement you actually have. The right choice depends on automation, source location, encoding needs, and your ability to keep the feed stable; there is no universally cheapest option established for every event.

Estimate total cost before committing
First write down the event frequency and duration, output resolution and codec, source format, number of destinations, region, setup time, and any idle time. Then compare the whole workflow, not just a VM’s hourly line item.
- Compute or managed service: Linode cost follows the VM and how long it runs. Live Stream API charges depend on active-channel duration, resolution and codec, added outputs, and distribution endpoints. Google says an active channel may accrue charges even when no input stream is arriving, so stop resources when the event is over. Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing explains the usage model.
- Encoding: If the file already matches the intended output, you may not need to transcode it. If it does not, account for the VM’s processing capacity or Google API charges that vary by output resolution and codec. VPU capacity is relevant to processing workloads, not automatically to a simple relay.
- Storage and network: Account for where the source file lives, transfer into the service, outbound delivery, regional plan terms, and possible overages. Akamai notes that most paid services accrue hourly up to a monthly cap, while network transfer overages are excluded from its cap assurance. Akamai’s price-capping guide sets out that distinction.
- Operations: Include the time and responsibility for initial setup, updates, access control, logs, monitoring, reconnects, and event-day support. A lower compute bill can involve more operator work; no labor cost can be assumed without knowing your team and event.
- Event lifecycle: For infrequent broadcasts, check whether every resource can be stopped cleanly after the event. In Google’s case, channel activity and distributions have separate lifecycle and billing implications.
Akamai’s opened Asia Pacific pricing table displays legacy shared-CPU examples of a Nanode 1 GB at $5/month and a Linode 4 GB at $24/month. Those are regional examples, not global quotes; plan generation, availability, location, and current pricing may differ. Check the live table for your region before estimating. Set up the YouTube event and source carefully
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says encoder-based live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Check eligibility before planning the event. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the requirements.
- Schedule in Live Control Room. Create the event and use the server URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key as a credential: do not put a real key in a public repository, terminal capture, article, or screenshot.
- Prepare the source path. Ensure the VM or managed workflow can access the video and that the source process can play it as a live feed. For a Linode relay, secure server access and require authentication for any RTMP server exposed to a source; Akamai’s guide explicitly recommends authentication and warns that excessively high stream rates can disconnect OBS.
- Apply YouTube-compatible encoder settings. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS plus H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the current settings table for the chosen resolution and codec rather than copying arbitrary bitrate values. YouTube encoder settings has the details.
- Test the full path. Run a representative segment through the actual source, relay or API, and YouTube preview. Check audio/video sync, levels, continuity, reconnect behavior, and that the event receives the intended feed before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- Start early and monitor. YouTube Help says: “Start encoders at least 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start.” Check the preview and monitor audio and video during the event. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover this advice.
- Stop what is billable. After the event, stop the source and any VM you no longer need. For Live Stream API, stop the distribution and channel according to the documented lifecycle rather than leaving an active channel idle.
Protect the stream and the documentary itself
A reliable feed does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the video. Before scheduling, confirm that you hold the necessary rights to the documentary, soundtrack, archival footage, photographs, and any other included material for a YouTube livestream. Do not assume that owning a copy or having permission for an upload automatically covers livestreaming.
Also consider YouTube’s channel policies and the value of the live presentation. Replaying material as a live stream does not make it original, licensed, or eligible for monetization by itself. Review current YouTube copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content; the technical setup sources cited here do not determine those rights or policy outcomes.

Common failure points and practical fixes
- No YouTube preview: Verify that the event is scheduled, the source is running, and the exact current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room are configured. Check network reachability and the logs at the source, relay, or API output.
- Feed disconnects under load: Check for excessive stream rates, CPU or memory pressure, and unstable source connectivity. Akamai’s older guide cautions that excessively high stream rates can disconnect OBS; reduce unnecessary processing and test with the intended output settings.
- Audio or video quality is wrong: Confirm that the source file, encoder output, and YouTube settings agree on codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval. Do not raise bitrate without checking available upload capacity and the target settings table.
- Google charges continue after the event: Check whether the channel or a distribution remains active. Google documents charges for active channel time, including periods without an input stream, and separate distribution costs; stop both as appropriate.
- Linode relay works manually but not on schedule: The NGINX/RTMP guide does not provide a complete prerecorded event scheduler. Add and test your own source start/stop automation, logging, and recovery path, or use a simpler source-to-YouTube setup if it meets the need.
- Unexpected costs: Recheck region, transfer allowances, encoding needs, idle duration, and endpoint count. A regional example or base VM price is not a full event estimate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual need is continuous YouTube playback from uploaded videos rather than a single scheduled event, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
