Configure a YouTube stream in Live Control Room, enter its stream URL and key in the encoder, use the recording as the source, and keep the PC, encoder, network connection, and power available for the entire broadcast. For a true 24/7 channel, test the complete setup first and plan for copyright checks, interruptions, and YouTube’s limits on long-stream archiving and rewind.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s computer livestreaming guidance.
- A Windows 11 PC, a stable wired or wireless internet connection with adequate upload capacity, and encoder software. YouTube identifies OBS as open-source software for recording and livestreaming.
- A video recording that you have permission to broadcast on YouTube Live, including the music, lyrics, performances, clips, and other third-party material it contains.
- Someone able to test and monitor the stream. A continuous broadcast depends on the PC, encoder, network, and power remaining available.
Set up a recorded service with OBS on Windows 11
- Check channel access. Sign in to YouTube Studio and confirm that the channel can livestream. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Clear the recording for this use. Confirm with the relevant rights holders or licensing administrator that permission covers the specific YouTube livestream and any archive. A license for in-person worship or another use does not by itself establish permission for this broadcast.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure the stream. Copy the stream URL and key from the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it can send a feed to the stream. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the encoder. Install and open OBS, choose the recorded service as the video source, and configure the YouTube connection with the stream URL and key. OBS menus and playback behavior can change; consult its current documentation for the exact controls. Check that the recording plays through to its end, and test any repeat or playlist behavior you intend to use before relying on it.
- Match encoder settings to the recording and connection. Choose a resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. YouTube recommends H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it: it is RTMP over TLS/SSL and encrypts the connection.
- Keep the PC awake while plugged in. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the plugged-in sleep timeout long enough for the broadcast or to prevent sleep during it. The display timeout is separate, so the screen can turn off while the PC remains awake. Menus may differ by device or Windows build. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, then confirm the public watch page works. Test audio and video, stream health, and the complete playback cycle. If you are making a local recording, check that archive too. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; see Streaming tips.
Plan upload capacity and stream quality
Use the connection’s outbound upload speed—not download speed—as your reference. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, if the configured stream bitrate totals 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity. Shared connections can fluctuate, so leave more margin if other devices or services use the network during worship.
Choose a YouTube-listed resolution and bitrate that suit the source recording and the capacity you can reliably sustain. Raising quality beyond the source does not add detail, while an overly ambitious bitrate can lead to dropped frames or interruptions if upload capacity falls. Test at the settings you plan to use, on the actual network, and watch the Live Control Room’s stream health.
Copyright and YouTube interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even when material is licensed, the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel in Content ID for the live stream to proceed without interruption. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Do not assume a recording is cleared because the congregation heard or saw the material in person, because your organization made the recording, or because a license covers a different context. Ask the rights holder or licensing administrator whether the specific YouTube livestream and its archive are covered, and whether channel allowlisting is needed.
What changes when the stream runs longer than 12 hours?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, rewind capability may be limited or unavailable, and you should not count on one complete archive of an around-the-clock broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance and DVR documentation.

Decide what viewers need: the ability to rewind while the stream is live, a replay afterward, or a set of shorter scheduled broadcasts. Test the chosen arrangement rather than promising continuous DVR or a single complete replay for a 24/7 stream.
Keep the Windows setup running reliably
- Prevent sleep: Check the plugged-in sleep timeout and confirm the PC stays awake after the display turns off.
- Protect the connection: Measure outbound upload capacity and test while the network is being used as it will be during the broadcast.
- Monitor the actual output: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. YouTube advises continuous monitoring.
- Test recovery: Before relying on a continuous broadcast, test what happens if the network drops, the encoder closes, or the computer restarts. The basic Windows setup depends on local power, hardware, software, and connectivity.
- Review the replay: If you make a local archive, inspect it and confirm that the result meets your needs.

Troubleshooting common problems
The channel cannot start a livestream
Confirm channel verification and check for livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If the feature was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
The Live Control Room has no video or shows a connection error
Check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and key, that the encoder is running, and that the network has enough outbound capacity. If you changed stream settings, verify that the encoder is pointed at the intended stream.

The broadcast is choppy or drops frames
Compare total configured bitrate with available upload speed, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the bitrate or choose a lower supported resolution if the connection cannot reliably sustain the current settings. Test again on the broadcast network.
The stream stops when nobody is using the PC
Check the plugged-in sleep timeout in Windows 11 at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Confirm that the PC remains awake even when its display turns off.
YouTube replaces or interrupts the live video
A third-party-content match may trigger a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Review rights for all included material and ask the rights holder whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting for this use.
Viewers cannot rewind, or the replay is incomplete
Check the stream’s duration. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, and YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use a tested shorter-broadcast or separate-recording plan if viewers need a reliable replay.
