Choose based on the encoder’s CPU needs, sustained outbound traffic, region and route to YouTube ingest, and how you will detect and recover from failures. Hetzner Cloud offers flexible capacity, including CCX plans with dedicated CPU resources; its standard dedicated root servers offer a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink and unlimited traffic under the published policy. The 10 Gbit/s dedicated-server option has a different traffic allowance.

These are provider-level distinctions, not a guarantee that a particular server can encode a particular video. The available guidance does not establish a universal CPU threshold for a resolution, codec or software encoder. Benchmark the actual workload before choosing a plan. Estimate bandwidth before comparing plans
Encoder bitrate and a provider’s traffic allowance are different measurements. Bitrate is the stream’s ongoing upload rate; the hosting plan’s allowance determines how much outbound data can be sent within its traffic terms. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must remain below available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. [YouTube streaming tips]
As a planning estimate, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB (1 Mbps × 86,400 seconds × 30 ÷ 8, with decimal GB). At that estimate, a continuous 10 Mbps stream sends about 3.24 TB in 30 days, before protocol overhead or other outbound traffic. A 12 Mbps stream sends about 3.89 TB. These calculations are estimates, not a provider billing measurement; check the plan’s current traffic accounting and allowance.

- Use the actual total bitrate, including audio, and multiply by the hours streamed.
- Allow headroom on the server’s network path as well as on the encoder’s available upload bandwidth.
- For cloud plans, verify the exact region and plan allowance, plus the current overage rate. Hetzner says cloud overage is billed in 100 MB blocks; usage notices at 75% and 100% are alerts, not caps. [Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ]
- For dedicated servers, distinguish the standard 1 Gbit/s policy from the 10 Gbit/s option’s included traffic and overage terms. [Hetzner traffic documentation]
Size the encoder and validate the route
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 6 Mbps for 720p60. Treat these as YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a given host can encode the source. - Measure the real workload. Run the intended encoder, source, codec, resolution and frame rate on the candidate server. Watch CPU use and output stability over a representative period; the available documentation does not provide a one-size-fits-all CPU requirement.
- Check the route and available bandwidth. Test from the server’s actual region to the intended YouTube ingest, and leave the 20% bandwidth margin YouTube recommends. A nominal uplink speed alone does not prove the route will remain healthy. [YouTube streaming tips]
- Test YouTube ingest before relying on it. Send a private or unlisted test stream, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify audio and video before making a public broadcast. Plan for recovery, not just server uptime
A continuous broadcast depends on the source media, encoder process, software supervision, server, network route, YouTube ingest and recovery procedure. Hetzner lists minimum network availability of 99.9% on its AX42 product page, but that is a product-page network figure—not an end-to-end stream-uptime guarantee. [Hetzner AX42]

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could break a stream. It recommends testing backup-encoder failover, monitoring stream health, checking the Live Control Room preview, and watching audio and video during the event. - Supervise the encoder so a crashed process can be detected and restarted; separately confirm that a restart reconnects to YouTube as intended.
- Rehearse backup-encoder failover rather than assuming a second process or server will take over cleanly.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the actual audio and video; a running process is not proof of a healthy broadcast.
- For loops of recorded material, verify that you have the rights to the video, music and other included content. YouTube’s rules and monetization eligibility are separate from hosting capacity; uninterrupted playback does not ensure that content complies with platform policies.
Which should you choose?
- Evaluate shared Cloud when flexibility or resizing matters and your measured CPU use fits its shared, burstable model. Confirm regional traffic allowance and billable overage first.
- Evaluate CCX when your encoder needs more predictable CPU performance but you do not need a whole physical server. Its traffic terms remain plan- and region-specific.
- Evaluate a dedicated root server when the model, location, uplink and standard traffic policy suit your sustained workload. Confirm whether you are considering the standard 1 Gbit/s configuration or the 10 Gbit/s option.
- Do not choose on a headline price or availability figure alone. Compare current plan or model pricing, region, sustained traffic cost, measured encoder load and recovery setup. The available facts do not establish current complete price comparisons or a universal break-even point.
