You can run a pre-recorded YouTube Live channel from a Hetzner dedicated server by having an encoder on the server play and send your video to YouTube’s live ingest endpoint. Create a YouTube Live event, give the encoder its RTMPS address and stream key, and keep the encoder running. The server does not upload a video file as a normal YouTube upload; it sends a live feed.
This guide covers the YouTube setup and the checks needed for a continuous stream. It does not establish the capacity or terms of any particular Hetzner offer: confirm the selected server’s current hardware, network, traffic and acceptable-use conditions before relying on it for 24/7 output.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified, eligible to livestream, and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance. YouTube’s minimum age for livestreaming is 16.
- A Hetzner dedicated server with an operating system and sustained outbound network capacity suitable for the encoder and stream. Check the exact server offer and current provider terms; capacity and permission for uninterrupted output cannot be assumed from the word “dedicated.”
- Video and audio you have the rights to stream live worldwide, including applicable music rights.
- An encoder that can read your media, loop or schedule it, and send a continuous stream to YouTube. YouTube lists software encoders including OBS in its encoder setup guide; verify that your chosen software supports your server’s operating system and unattended operation.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room. If this is your first livestream, allow for activation time before your planned start.
- Create or schedule a stream and set the event details, visibility and start time appropriate to your channel.
- In the stream settings, copy the server/ingest URL and stream key. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key authorizes it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in public logs or share it with people who should not control the stream. Rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Keep the event’s Live Control Room open for preview and stream-health checks when you start sending video.
Choose an encoder and ingestion protocol
The encoder reads your prerecorded files and turns them into a live feed. Configure it to play the intended sequence or loop, send audio and video together, and restart or recover in a way that suits your operating system and schedule. Do not assume that a particular encoder has been tested on your Hetzner server: confirm compatibility and unattended behavior on the chosen OS.
| Protocol | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Standard software-encoder workflows; YouTube recommends this encrypted RTMP option when supported. | Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube or select YouTube/RTMPS in the encoder. Configure the matching stream key. |
| HLS | Specific workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. | Higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS and stricter segment and rolling-playlist requirements; it is not automatically the better choice for a simple prerecorded loop. |
For a typical prerecorded channel, start with RTMPS unless your codec or HDR requirements call for YouTube’s HLS workflow. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and HLS ingestion guidance for the current protocol requirements.

Set video, audio and bitrate for YouTube
For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube’s published recommendations include H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate together using YouTube’s current settings table; there is no single bitrate that suits every output. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into playback formats for viewers.
- Match the encoder output to the actual source and intended viewing quality; avoid selecting a resolution or frame rate your server cannot encode or sustain.
- Set CBR and the recommended keyframe interval in the encoder’s output settings.
- Check that the audio track is enabled and stays in sync with the video throughout the loop.
- Use the current official bitrate table rather than copying a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate or codec workflow.
Estimate server bandwidth and validate the stream
Size the server connection for the encoded outbound stream, not for the size of the video files stored on disk. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate. If you send a backup feed as well, include its bitrate in the total. The usable capacity is sustained outbound capacity from the selected server and datacenter, not a speed test on your home connection.

- Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate in the encoder.
- Check that the selected server’s sustained outbound capacity can carry the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom. Verify any traffic limits and network conditions against the exact current Hetzner offer.
- Run a test using the same media type, motion, audio and settings planned for production. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then confirm that the public watch page plays correctly.
- Monitor audio and video after launch. If you configured a backup feed, test the failover behavior rather than assuming it will work.
YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A test is useful for finding problems, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Make sure the content is suitable to stream and monetize
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including applicable music licensing rights. A license for an ordinary on-demand upload may not cover continuous live rebroadcast; check that the specific license permits this use.

Technical uptime does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and assess channels as a whole. Its July 15, 2025 clarification named repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and did not change the reused-content policy. Content with little original contribution may affect eligibility; the policy does not mean that every prerecorded livestream is automatically disallowed or automatically monetizable.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Confirm the event is active, the encoder is using the event’s ingest URL and the correct stream key, and the selected protocol matches the endpoint. Keep the key private and replace it if exposed. |
| Stream health reports instability or viewers see interruptions | Check sustained server outbound capacity against the total bitrate, including any backup feed, and leave the recommended headroom. Check the selected offer’s network and traffic terms; reduce the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| Video or audio quality is poor | Compare the encoder’s codec, CBR, frame rate, keyframe interval, resolution and bitrate with YouTube’s current settings guidance. Test with representative source footage and verify audio is enabled and synchronized. |
| First livestream will not activate | Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility, including whether the channel has had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Stream ends when expected to loop | Check the encoder’s playlist/loop configuration, media access and process status on the server. Arrange appropriate monitoring and restart behavior for the encoder you selected; a dedicated server alone does not keep a stopped encoder running. |
Or let it run in the cloud
