You can use a Hetzner Cloud snapshot to create a replacement server for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but it is a copy of the server disk—not a seamless live migration. Hetzner excludes attached Volumes and recommends shutting down the source for a consistent snapshot. Build and test the replacement, then plan a controlled encoder cutover; neither a snapshot nor YouTube’s encoder setup guarantees an uninterrupted handoff.
What a snapshot does—and what it leaves behind
A Hetzner Cloud snapshot captures a server disk at a point in time. You can use it to create a new server, including in a different location, provided the replacement uses a compatible CPU architecture. It does not move attached Hetzner Volumes, and any disk changes made after the snapshot are absent from the new image. See Hetzner’s Backups/Snapshots overview and server FAQ.
A snapshot is therefore a starting point for rebuilding the host, not proof that the stream process, mounts, networking, or YouTube event will continue exactly as before. Hetzner also says you cannot change an existing server’s location in place; creating a replacement is the route when changing locations.
Before you begin: inventory the stream server
Write down the details needed to recreate and verify the source. Keep credentials, especially the YouTube stream key, out of public notes, scripts, screenshots, and logs.

- Source server’s CPU architecture, server type, location, public and private networking, and firewall rules.
- Attached Volumes, their data, mount points, and any services that depend on them. Plan separately to attach or recreate storage; a snapshot does not contain Volume data.
- Streaming software and how it starts: service manager, container, scheduled task, shell script, or another process. Record relevant configuration and environment variables without exposing secrets.
- YouTube stream URL and the method used to supply the stream key. Confirm you can access the relevant controls in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Encoder output settings, including resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval, plus any local recording destination.
- How the audience reaches the stream: YouTube watch page, a website embed, DNS, or another endpoint. Identify which parts, if any, must change during cutover.
Choose when to take the snapshot
Hetzner recommends powering off the source before creating a snapshot to improve disk consistency. A snapshot while the server is running is possible, but Hetzner does not guarantee consistency in that case. For a 24/7 stream, this creates a real trade-off: a controlled stop may interrupt the feed, while a live snapshot avoids that planned stop but may capture changing data inconsistently. Hetzner describes the consistency caveat in its Backups/Snapshots FAQ.
- If a planned interruption is acceptable: arrange the stop, power off the source, create the snapshot, and restart the old server if you want to keep it serving while you prepare the replacement.
- If you cannot stop the stream: treat the snapshot as a best-effort disk image, not a guaranteed consistent backup. Use application-level quiescing or a separate backup for changing state if your software supports it, and validate the replacement carefully.
Do not assume there is a universal downtime figure. The interruption depends on your stream workflow, how you take the snapshot, and how you switch encoders.

Create and prepare the replacement server
- Create a snapshot from the source. In Hetzner Cloud, use the source server’s snapshot action. For a consistency-focused snapshot, follow Hetzner’s recommendation to power off first.
- Create a new server from that snapshot. Choose the target location and a server type whose CPU architecture is compatible with the snapshot. Configure networking and firewall resources for the replacement; they are part of the deployment plan and should not be presumed correct merely because the disk image booted.
- Handle Volumes separately. Recreate or attach the required Volumes and restore their data as needed. Check that each filesystem mounts at the expected path and that services have the required read/write access.
- Boot and inspect the host. Confirm SSH or other administrative access, expected disk space, system time, network interfaces, firewall behavior, and outbound connectivity.
- Check streaming services and configuration. Verify the relevant service is installed, enabled as intended, and using the correct media paths and environment. Do not start a second public encoder yet if doing so could create duplicate feeds or conflicting writes.
Validate YouTube and the encoder before cutover
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the correct stream URL and stream key. Verify both in Live Control Room and ensure the replacement’s encoder uses the intended values; keep the key private and rotate or update it through YouTube’s controls when necessary. YouTube’s instructions for connecting an encoder are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Check that the replacement can read the media and write any local recordings to the intended disk or Volume.
- Verify the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe settings against the configuration you intend to use. Confirm the stream’s network path can sustain the actual primary and backup bitrate, if applicable.
- Use a test stream or controlled event when possible. Check that the encoder connects and that Live Control Room shows a usable preview before directing the production feed to the new host.
- Inspect audio/video synchronization and quality, not just the presence of a connected status.
- Check watch-page access and that any embedded or linked destination still points to the correct event or page.
A successful boot or encoder connection alone does not establish that every custom installation has been reconfigured correctly. Test the actual snapshot-derived server and its storage, network, and stream workflow.

Cut over without assuming a seamless handoff
- Choose the cutover point. Decide when the old encoder stops and the replacement starts. If your topology uses DNS or another endpoint, make only the changes that topology requires; the snapshot itself does not perform a traffic switch.
- Start or redirect the encoder deliberately. Point the active process at the intended YouTube stream URL and key. Avoid leaving two encoders publishing unexpectedly or letting both servers write to shared state.
- Confirm the audience-facing stream. Check Live Control Room preview, stream health, the public watch page, audio/video, and any site embed or player your viewers use.
- Observe before retiring the source. Watch the new host’s process, network, mounts, and output. Keep the original server available until the replacement is confirmed and rollback is no longer needed.
- Stop the old process when appropriate. Explicitly decide when to stop the source encoder and server so it cannot create a duplicate feed or conflicting writes. Preserve its data until you have finished the rollback window.
YouTube’s setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder, but it does not promise that a host migration or reconnection will preserve one continuous live event. Plan for a possible interruption rather than advertising a zero-downtime cutover.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 feed should therefore have an independent local recording plan and enough storage management to prevent recordings from filling the server disk. See Archive live streams. Long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR beyond 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams.

After cutover, verify that local archive files are actually growing and playable, not merely that the encoder reports recording. If you operate primary and backup encoders, YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary or disconnecting its network path and confirming playback rolls over as intended. Follow YouTube live streaming tips for stream checks and failover guidance.
YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Confirm the replacement server’s actual route and outbound capacity; a snapshot does not carry over or guarantee network performance. See Streaming tips.

Common migration problems and fixes
- The replacement will not boot or behaves inconsistently: confirm CPU architecture compatibility. If the source snapshot was taken while running, remember that disk consistency is not guaranteed; restore from a suitable backup or recreate from a powered-off source if necessary.
- Media files or configuration are missing: check whether they lived on an attached Volume or were changed after snapshot time. Reattach or restore the Volume and verify mount paths and permissions.
- The stream process starts but cannot reach YouTube: review the replacement’s firewall and network configuration, outbound reachability, and the encoder’s stream URL and key. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- Live Control Room has no preview or the wrong event is active: verify the selected event, stream URL, key, and encoder connection; use a controlled test before production cutover.
- The stream drops or degrades under load: check the new host’s actual route and sustained bandwidth against the combined bitrate, allowing YouTube’s suggested 20% headroom where primary and backup feeds are used.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: do not rely on YouTube to retain a continuous stream beyond 12 hours. Confirm the local recording path, available space, file growth, and playback.
- Two feeds or conflicting writes appear: check whether the old and new encoder processes are both active or whether both hosts are writing shared state. Stop the unintended process and review the cutover plan.
