You can use a DigitalOcean Droplet to send a continuous sequence of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live, but a YouTube playlist by itself will not create a live broadcast. Create or schedule a YouTube Live event, then run an encoder on the Droplet to join your video files and send the feed using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. The exact Droplet size depends on your files, encoding settings and workload; no particular size guarantees 24/7 operation.
What “24/7 YouTube playlist” means
A normal YouTube playlist is for on-demand videos. For a continuous prerecorded broadcast, YouTube needs a live event and an encoder or streaming service that supplies a live feed. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder documentation also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for continuous prerecorded-video streaming; that listing does not establish YouTube endorsement, current pricing or comparative performance. With a self-managed setup, the Droplet hosts the media files and sequencing/encoding software. It sends one continuous feed to YouTube Live. You manage the server, video sequence, encoder configuration, monitoring and recovery yourself.

Prepare the YouTube Live event
- Check live access early. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become enabled, so do not leave activation until the planned start.
- Create or schedule the event. Scheduling can make an upcoming stream visible to subscribers and allow reminders. Confirm the current Live Control Room labels and event settings in YouTube Studio.
- Get the connection details. In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL and documents how to reveal the RTMPS URL. Enter the URL and key in your encoder.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in public commands, screenshots, repositories or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Prepare and sequence your video files
- Choose the order. Make an explicit ordered list of the files you want played. Keep the source files available on the Droplet or on storage your encoder can reliably access.
- Check compatibility. Different containers, codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio layouts and durations can complicate joining files. Test the actual files and transitions with your chosen software. Do not assume arbitrary files will join seamlessly.
- Choose how to join them. FFmpeg offers a concat demuxer and a concat filter. The demuxer can avoid re-encoding in suitable cases; the filter is another option when inputs need processing. Which works depends on the media and desired output. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains the concat approaches but does not provide a complete, tested command for an indefinitely looping YouTube stream. - Configure a continuous encoder feed. Configure your sequencing and encoding software to provide a real-time feed to the YouTube stream URL and key. Test that the feed continues across file boundaries and repeats the intended sequence before relying on it for a public broadcast.
Size the Droplet and estimate bandwidth
DigitalOcean Droplet configurations vary in CPU, memory, disk and network resources. Your workload determines what is adequate: encoding resolution and codec, whether files need transcoding, bitrate, number of concurrent tasks and other software all matter. DigitalOcean documents maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets. Estimate outbound transfer from the stream’s sustained bitrate and runtime, then compare that estimate with your team’s remaining pooled allowance. As a rough data-volume calculation, bitrate in bits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 gives bytes sent, before accounting for protocol overhead and variation. Check the plan’s allowance and current account-level usage before deployment.
DigitalOcean documents that Droplet outbound transfer allowances are pooled at the team level, inbound transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB. Configure, test and monitor the broadcast
- Encoder settings: YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported codecs and constant bitrate. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the settings to the encoder you use. YouTube encoder settings (accessed 3 October 2026)
- Preview before the event: Start the encoder ahead of the planned broadcast and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube advises preparing the encoder in advance, checking outbound bandwidth and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube live streaming tips
- Test the whole sequence: Watch file changes, audio continuity and the return from the last file to the first. A successful test with one file does not establish that a mixed-format playlist will loop cleanly.
- Plan for failure: Decide how the process restarts after a crash or Droplet reboot, how you will notice a stalled feed, and how you will restore the stream. Keep credentials restricted and verify that media files remain accessible. These are implementation responsibilities, not uptime guarantees from DigitalOcean or YouTube.
Copyright and YouTube policy
Having permission to upload a video does not automatically settle whether you may rebroadcast it as a continuous live stream or monetize it. Confirm that you hold the necessary rights for the video, music, images and other material, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before scheduling. Repeated or reused material can raise separate eligibility questions; a technically successful stream does not guarantee monetization or policy approval.
Troubleshooting common problems
