To stream multiple MP4 files from a Vultr Linux server to YouTube Live, put their paths in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist, then send that input to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use stream copy only when the files’ encoded streams are compatible with the output; otherwise, encode to settings that match YouTube’s current guidance. The commands below are starting points, not tested universal configurations.
What you need before starting
- A Vultr Linux server with FFmpeg installed, enough CPU for any transcoding you plan to do, and outbound network access to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- The MP4 files stored on the server and readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- A YouTube live event and its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A playlist file that specifies the videos in the order you want them to play.
Vultr’s published FFmpeg installation guide uses Ubuntu 20.04 as its example and also lists Debian 10, CentOS 8, and Fedora 32. Current Vultr instance sizing, egress pricing, and bandwidth allowances are not established here. Check the plan details and estimate transfer for your stream’s bitrate and duration before choosing a server.
Prepare an ordered playlist of files
Create a plain-text playlist, for example at /srv/videos/playlist.txt. Use absolute paths and list files in playback order:

Make sure each path exists and is readable, and keep filenames simple where possible to avoid quoting or escaping errors. Choose stream copy or transcoding

FFmpeg documents stream copy as a path that omits decoding and encoding; it is not a promise that arbitrary MP4 files can be joined and sent unchanged. Inspect the actual files and test the playlist. FFmpeg stream-copy documentation

Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Vultr server or network connection can sustain a stream. Pick output settings to match the source and the event’s needs. The sample command below uses a 60 fps keyframe interval of 60 frames, which is 2 seconds at 30 fps—not at every frame rate. If you change the frame rate, set the GOP length so keyframes are about 2 seconds apart and no more than 4 seconds apart. Use bitrate recommendations for your actual output resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating the 1080p examples as universal values.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up the event. Copy the exact ingest URL and stream key shown in its encoder settings.
- Select RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Select RTMPS in Live Control Room and use the URL it displays; RTMP may be shown by default. YouTube encoder settings
- Run FFmpeg with the playlist. For a transcoding starting point, replace the placeholder destination with the exact RTMPS URL and key arrangement provided for your event:

-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'This is an illustrative command, not a tested configuration or a universal YouTube preset. Its bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, codecs, audio settings, URL syntax, and key arrangement must be adjusted for the event, the source files, and YouTube’s current guidance. In particular, -g 60 represents a 2-second interval only when the output is 30 fps. If compatible source streams need no changes, try stream copy instead by replacing the encoding options with -c copy; test it with the actual playlist before relying on it. Keep the key secret. YouTube treats a stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a command, script, screenshot, shell history, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube stream settings

Monitor the preview and end the stream
Start FFmpeg and watch the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to begin the encoder feed, wait for the preview, then select “Go live.” If the preview does not appear or health warnings show, diagnose the input, encoder output, and connection before depending on the stream unattended. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. For a scheduled event, end it through Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as directed there. A playlist that reaches its final file is not by itself a repeat instruction: if you want the folder to play again, configure and test repeat behavior deliberately rather than assuming the concat list loops. Troubleshooting common failures
