How to Use AWS Elemental MediaPackage for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream

MediaPackage packages an encoder's live feed; it does not loop a playlist or publish directly to YouTube. Here's how to connect the separate pieces and test them.

AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not create or loop a playlist, and it does not publish directly to YouTube. It receives a live stream from an upstream encoder and packages that stream for playback through an endpoint. To run prerecorded videos as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, you need a playlist-capable playout and encoding layer, then configure its YouTube output separately from its MediaPackage output.

What MediaPackage does in this workflow

Think of this as two separate delivery paths, with the encoder or playout system in the middle:

Component Role
Playlist playout and encoder Plays authorized prerecorded videos continuously and sends a live encoded feed to the destinations it supports.
AWS Elemental MediaPackage Receives an encoder’s input through a channel and makes packaged content available through a configured endpoint for players or CDNs.
YouTube Live Receives a separate encoder output using the stream URL and stream key shown for the YouTube live stream.

MediaPackage is an origin and just-in-time packager, not a scheduler or playlist player. AWS’s MediaPackage getting-started documentation describes the channel as the encoder input and the endpoint as the way content is made available to players or CDNs. Do not assume YouTube can ingest a MediaPackage endpoint directly, or that an encoder can send to both destinations. Those capabilities depend on the encoder and its supported protocols.

Check YouTube eligibility and plan the stream

  • YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before configuring AWS.
  • YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream that runs longer than that should not be planned around an automatic archive; check YouTube Help for current archive behavior and decide whether separate, shorter sessions are needed.
  • Use only video and audio you are authorized to stream. A live format does not remove copyright obligations, and YouTube’s rules on reused content may affect monetization independently of whether a stream technically works.
  • Choose a playout/encoder that can loop the playlist and send the required output or outputs. Confirm its protocols, codecs, failover behavior, and whether it can deliver to YouTube and MediaPackage at the same time. MediaPackage documentation does not establish compatibility for a particular third-party encoder.

Set up the MediaPackage and YouTube paths

  1. Choose and prepare the playout source. Load the prerecorded videos into a playlist-capable system that can keep playing continuously. Set the encoder’s output format and quality to values accepted by each destination. Do not assume the MediaPackage output settings automatically meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; confirm the current requirements for the encoder and destination combination you choose.
  2. Create a MediaPackage channel and endpoint. In the AWS Elemental MediaPackage console, create a channel for the incoming encoder feed, then create an endpoint with the packaging format and any access or encryption settings your playback workflow requires. AWS console labels and supported formats vary by MediaPackage generation and endpoint type, so follow the guide for the generation you are using.
  3. Configure the encoder’s MediaPackage output. For standard MediaPackage live input, AWS documents HLS pushed over HTTPS using WebDAV and digest authentication. Use the input URL and credentials generated for the channel, not the playback endpoint URL. If you use input redundancy, AWS says the redundant inputs should use matching encoder settings.
  4. Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube output settings. The key is a credential: keep it private and reset it if it is exposed.
  5. Choose the YouTube ingest protocol separately. If the encoder sends HLS to YouTube, follow YouTube’s HLS ingest profile: use TS segments that are 1–4 seconds long, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are YouTube-side requirements; do not assume MediaPackage’s HLS input settings carry over to YouTube. If you use another YouTube ingest protocol, follow that protocol’s current YouTube settings instead.
  6. Confirm every quality and destination setting. Resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, bitrate, keyframe interval, and segment behavior must be selected for the specific encoder and destination profile. The documentation summarized here does not establish one bitrate or keyframe value for this setup, so do not copy an unsupported universal number. Verify the current requirements in the relevant AWS, encoder, and YouTube documentation before going live.
  7. Test the complete route before relying on it. Start the encoder, verify MediaPackage endpoint playback in the intended player or CDN path, and check YouTube’s live preview and stream health. Test playlist transitions and, if your setup uses redundant inputs or other failover, test what happens when the active source fails. Monitor picture and sound after launch.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
MediaPackage endpoint has no playable content Encoder-to-channel input configuration Confirm the encoder is sending to the channel’s generated input URL with the matching credentials and the protocol expected by the MediaPackage generation in use. Check that the endpoint packaging format matches the player or CDN.
YouTube does not show the encoder feed YouTube output configuration Verify the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder, and confirm that the selected ingest protocol and encoder output meet YouTube’s current requirements. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
One destination works but the other does not Encoder capabilities or destination-specific settings Check that the encoder actually supports the intended simultaneous outputs and the separate ingest profiles. A successful MediaPackage input does not establish a valid YouTube output, or vice versa.
YouTube HLS ingest rejects or falls behind HLS segment and playlist behavior For YouTube HLS, check TS format, 1–4 second segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, absence of byte ranges, and the limit of five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist.
Playback breaks during a playlist transition or source failure Playout continuity and failover Test the transition and failure cases before launch. Check the encoder’s own playlist and failover controls; MediaPackage is not the playlist scheduler.
Audio or video degrades after launch Live output health Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health information, then monitor the actual playback path. Check the encoder output and the endpoint path separately to isolate which leg is affected.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to assembling and operating this AWS workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it is for YouTube, not camera-based live capture.

Cost and operational trade-offs

AWS MediaPackage is only one part of this design. You also need a continuously available playlist/encoder layer, and possibly other services depending on how you operate it. The exact AWS bill depends on the services, usage, region, and configuration; no total cost can be calculated from the architecture alone. Before deployment, estimate the cost of every component you intend to run and account for the operational work of monitoring the encoder, playlist, endpoints, and YouTube ingest.
