Yes, you can run a YouTube encoder on an EC2 Spot Instance, but a single Spot instance is not a reliable 24/7 host: AWS can reclaim its capacity, and interruption notices are best effort. To use Spot responsibly, make the host replaceable, keep configuration and credentials outside it, automate encoder recovery, and test that YouTube playback actually resumes. A replacement virtual machine alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Is EC2 Spot suitable for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Spot Instances use spare Amazon EC2 capacity. AWS may interrupt one when it needs that capacity back; price and request constraints can also affect availability. Treat the instance as disposable, even if your stream is intended to run continuously. A persistent Spot request does not make its instance permanent.
AWS says Spot can provide savings of up to 90% compared with On-Demand prices. That is an AWS maximum claim, not a forecast for a particular instance, region, or workload. Spot capacity and actual savings vary, so compare current prices and availability for the capacity you can use.
The right design depends on the interruption your channel can tolerate. Decide whether a brief player interruption is acceptable, how quickly the encoder must reconnect, whether playback can resume at a saved point, and whether a second encoder or host should be ready. The official guidance does not establish a universal recovery-time objective or promise seamless failover for this architecture.

What happens when AWS interrupts a Spot Instance?
AWS typically provides a two-minute interruption notice before stopping or terminating an instance. The notice is best effort, not a guaranteed warning; hibernation begins immediately and does not provide that two-minute window. A rebalance recommendation may arrive earlier, but AWS still advises designing for unexpected interruption.
Monitor rebalance recommendations and interruption notices using supported EC2/EventBridge and instance metadata mechanisms. AWS’s interruption guidance suggests polling instance metadata every five seconds. Use an early signal, if received, to begin replacement or drain work; use an interruption notice to save state or clean up when time permits. Your recovery plan must also work if the host disappears without useful warning.

Build a replaceable streaming host
Automate launch and replacement
Build a repeatable machine image and startup configuration that can install or start the encoder consistently. AWS recommends using an Auto Scaling group to launch replacements and allowing flexibility across instance types and Availability Zones to broaden the pool of capacity. A replacement can still take time to launch and initialize, so automation is recovery—not proof of continuous playback.
Keep essential state off the instance
Store important files and configuration in durable services such as S3, EBS, or DynamoDB, as appropriate to your design. Do not depend on instance-store data surviving a stop or termination. Decide what must persist: source media, encoder configuration, restart position, and any state needed to resume the program. If the source is large, confirm that the replacement can retrieve it and become ready within your operational target.

Protect the stream key
YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Keep it secret, exclude it from public logs and machine images, and make sure replacement automation can retrieve it securely. Do not put a real key in shell history, screenshots, or examples that might be shared.
Configure the YouTube encoder and ingest
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest, with RTMPS recommended for encryption in transit. Its listed video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the supported settings depend on the chosen workflow. Match the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to YouTube’s current recommendations and to the stream source.

- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube gives four seconds as the maximum.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s documented guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate: choose the row for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current bitrate table. There is no single bitrate that is appropriate for every stream.
- Outbound bandwidth: YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% headroom over the stream’s bitrate. Treat this as guidance, not a guarantee of stable delivery.
Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrates before choosing a specific target. The appropriate bitrate also depends on the available outbound throughput from the EC2 host.

- Set an interruption and recovery target. Write down the playback gap your channel can accept, the intended reconnect time, and whether the program should resume at its previous position or restart.
- Prepare repeatable startup. Configure the machine image and launch process to install or start the encoder and retrieve required media and credentials without manual access to the old host.
- Configure Spot flexibility and replacement. Use an Auto Scaling group and consider multiple suitable instance types and Availability Zones. Keep durable state outside the instance.
- Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS where available, set the chosen codec and quality, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and confirm that bandwidth has the recommended headroom.
- Preview and monitor in YouTube Studio. Confirm the incoming stream and review stream-health messages before relying on the setup for a scheduled or continuous channel.
- Exercise interruption handling. Test the rebalance and interruption signal paths, then deliberately stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and confirming player rollover; apply the same end-to-end discipline to an EC2 interruption and replacement drill.
- Measure what viewers experience. Verify replacement launch, credential retrieval, encoder reconnect, and playback in the player. Record the observed gap and failure modes. A successful test demonstrates only the conditions tested; it does not establish a general availability percentage.
YouTube’s guidance also recommends previewing the stream and monitoring stream health during an event. A healthy EC2 instance is not sufficient evidence that the YouTube ingest or viewer playback is healthy.

Common failure modes and what to check
- The instance stops and no replacement appears: check the Auto Scaling group configuration, capacity choices, and Availability Zone flexibility. Spot capacity is not guaranteed in a narrowly constrained pool.
- A replacement is running but the channel is offline: check whether startup automation launched the encoder, retrieved media and credentials, and connected to YouTube. VM health and stream recovery are separate checks.
- The stream key is missing or rejected: verify secure credential retrieval and the YouTube stream configuration. Keep the key out of logs and images while diagnosing the issue.
- Viewers experience a gap despite a healthy replacement: measure the time required for launch, media access, encoder startup, ingest reconnection, and player rollover. A replacement launch by itself does not prove seamless failover.
- The stream reports poor health or drops frames: check outbound capacity, available headroom, bitrate, codec, and frame rate against YouTube’s current settings. Reduce the target quality if the host cannot sustain the required throughput.
- Saved progress disappears after termination: move required state to durable storage and test that the replacement can retrieve it. Do not rely on instance-store persistence.
Choose the right continuity trade-off

For a stream that cannot tolerate an interruption, do not rely on a single Spot host. Choose a design around the channel’s acceptable gap, then validate it at the player—not only in the EC2 console.
