There is no universally best AWS Region for an EC2 YouTube Live stream. Start by ruling out Regions that do not meet your residency, security, service, or instance requirements; then measure the network path from your actual source location and test a representative stream to YouTube. Compare total workload costs—not just the EC2 hourly rate—before choosing.
What determines the right Region?
The best choice depends on where your video or application data originates, where the people operating the system are, any jurisdictional requirements, the AWS services and EC2 instance type you need, and how well the real route to YouTube performs. AWS says location affects network latency and throughput, but geographic closeness alone does not establish which route will work best. Its August 4, 2026 guidance recommends measuring from the locations that matter before deployment (AWS: Measuring network latency to AWS Region before deployment; AWS Region selection and pricing considerations).
No published per-Region ranking establishes which AWS Region delivers the best YouTube Live ingest performance. Treat the nearest Region as a candidate to test, not as a proven winner. Also distinguish the stream’s ingest route from viewer latency: changing EC2 placement alone does not determine how quickly viewers see the stream.
Compare candidate Regions in a practical order
-
Write down the constraints and workload
Record where source video and application data are located, where operators work, any data-residency or security obligations, the EC2 instance family you require, and supporting AWS services. Note how long and how often the stream will run, because runtime and transfer charges affect the total.

-
Rule out Regions that cannot meet requirements
Check current AWS service and instance availability, capacity, and relevant compliance or residency requirements. Availability changes, so verify the exact instance type and supporting services for each candidate before committing. A Region that is closer or appears cheaper is not suitable if it fails a hard requirement.
-
Measure from a representative source location
From the network where your video source or operator workflow will actually run, compare candidate Regions for latency and sustained network quality. AWS’s measurement guidance cautions against treating geography as a substitute for measurement. A single ICMP ping is not a stream-quality test: it does not show whether a sustained upload over your actual application protocol will remain stable.

Test the real YouTube ingest path
Deploy a small test in the finalists and send a representative feed to YouTube. Compare sustained stability, dropped frames, ingest warnings, and YouTube’s stream-health messages—not only round-trip latency. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” Follow its current encoder settings guidance and live-stream latency guidance.
-
Estimate the full cost for each finalist
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate EC2 runtime, storage if used, and applicable data-transfer charges. Regional prices differ, and total cost depends on the workload; recheck current rates rather than choosing from an old hourly-price comparison. Re-estimate for long sessions or continuous operation.

Choose and record the result
Select a Region that satisfies the hard constraints, performs acceptably in the representative stream test, and has the lowest defensible total workload cost among the qualified options. Record the source location, date, test conditions, and outcome so you can reassess if prices, network conditions, availability, or requirements change.
What to compare across Regions
| Factor | Compare | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Network path | Measured latency and sustained stream stability from the actual source location | Geographic distance alone does not reliably predict performance. |
| Requirements | Data residency, security and compliance obligations, required AWS services, and instance types | These constraints may rule out a closer or less expensive Region. |
| Total cost | EC2 runtime, storage, and applicable data-transfer charges | Regional prices vary; verify current workload estimates. |
| Operational fit | Capacity, deployment familiarity, monitoring, and recovery needs | Check current availability; do not assume a Region has more capacity without evidence. |
| YouTube ingest | Supported protocol, encoder configuration, and YouTube stream-health results | The available guidance does not establish a universally best AWS Region for YouTube ingest. |
Keep AWS placement separate from YouTube encoder settings
AWS Region determines where your EC2 workload runs. YouTube ingest configuration is set in the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Use YouTube’s current guidance for the protocol and settings supported by your setup; where supported, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Never treat an encoder recommendation as a requirement imposed by AWS networking.

Settings to verify for RTMP or RTMPS
- Video codec: YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to its current protocol and encoder compatibility details.
- Frame rate: YouTube documents settings up to 60 frames per second.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate: Select it using YouTube’s current table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you use. For example, its retrieved English guidance lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of AWS network requirements.
For HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, YouTube describes HLS as an option; it also notes that HLS has higher latency because video is sent in segments. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture at the encoder or camera and viewing. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so test the end-to-end result rather than expecting Region selection to control viewer delay (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube protocols and HLS guidance).

AWS Local Zones place selected services, including EC2, nearer to population centers for workloads with location-sensitive needs. Consider one only when a specific location requirement justifies evaluating it. Confirm that the Local Zone offers the required services and instance type, and compare its current pricing and network behavior with ordinary Regions. The fact that a stream targets YouTube does not by itself make a Local Zone the better choice (AWS Local Zones).

Common selection mistakes and fixes
- Choosing solely by map distance: Keep the nearby Region on the shortlist, then measure the actual route and run a sustained ingest test.
- Optimizing only for ping time: Compare stream stability, dropped frames, ingest warnings, and health messages as well as latency.
- Comparing only EC2 hourly rates: Estimate runtime, storage, and applicable data transfer for the expected workload using current AWS pricing.
- Assuming a YouTube setting is an AWS requirement: Treat YouTube’s encoder settings and AWS placement as separate decisions; configure the encoder from YouTube’s current guidance.
- Picking a Region before checking availability: Verify the needed instance type, capacity, and supporting services in each finalist before deployment.
- Assuming a Region change will reduce viewer delay: Measure the end-to-end stream and consider YouTube’s latency mode and ingest protocol; Region selection alone does not establish viewer latency.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate option from running your own EC2 encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded up to 4K at 60 fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
