You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream by keeping a playout or encoder application running on a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM) and sending its output to YouTube Live. YouTube supplies the stream URL and stream key; the VM supplies the continuous feed. This can keep your home computer offline, but a single VM and encoder are not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback: plan for monitoring, restarts, network capacity, ongoing costs, and music rights.
How the setup works
The basic chain is: an audio playlist and visual source feed an encoder or playout application on a Compute Engine VM, which sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live. For a simple radio-style channel, the visual may be a static image or other permitted visual; a camera or capture card is not inherently required. The encoder’s resolution, codec, bitrate, and frame rate affect the VM’s processing and network needs.
Compute Engine is the infrastructure, not a turnkey radio station. You choose and maintain the VM, install and configure the software, protect the stream credentials, and handle failures. Google’s product information describes usage-based pricing that includes virtual machines, networking, and storage: Google Cloud Compute Engine.
Before you start
- A Google Cloud project with billing enabled and permission to create Compute Engine resources.
- A suitable VM region and machine type, persistent disk for software and any locally stored media, and a stable outbound network path.
- A Linux or other suitable operating system, plus an encoder or playout application configured to play your material continuously.
- A YouTube channel eligible to use live streaming, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Permission to broadcast every recording, composition, image, and other element in the program in the relevant territories and on YouTube.
Estimate the actual VM, disk, region, hours, and network costs with Google’s pricing calculator before deployment. A limited free tier should not be treated as a 24/7 production budget without calculating whether the intended configuration qualifies and what it would cost beyond any allowance.

Choose the VM and budget for the stream
Size for the workload, not just the word “radio”
A mostly static image and audio stream may need less video-encoding work than a program with frequent motion, but resource use depends on the chosen encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and settings. Confirm that the VM can sustain the encoder under real playback conditions. Also check Google Cloud’s documented outbound bandwidth limits: they vary by machine family, traffic path, and instance configuration, so a low target bitrate alone does not prove that a VM has adequate headroom. Understand transfer pricing narrowly
Google’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to certain Google products, including YouTube, as no-charge in the specified pricing category: Google Cloud VPC pricing. That listing does not establish that every stream-related transfer, destination, IP configuration, or service is free. Check the current pricing details for the exact architecture you deploy.

One VM is the simplest architecture, but a failed VM, encoder process, or network path can interrupt the broadcast. Google’s Compute Engine SLA distinguishes a single instance from instances deployed across multiple zones; applicability depends on the SLA terms and the design. A multi-zone design can add resilience characteristics, but it is more complex and should not be described as a promise of uninterrupted YouTube playback. Review the Compute Engine SLA for the applicable terms.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and review its visibility and available options in the current interface.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s stream setup documentation explains where to find them and how stream settings such as DVR and auto-start or auto-stop are controlled: YouTube stream settings.
- Keep the key private. Treat it as a password: do not publish it in screenshots, public scripts, or source repositories. Store it in a restricted configuration or secret store accessible only to the encoder. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Configure the encoder to send to YouTube. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s destination settings. Use a secure, supported connection where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. The stream can be previewed in Live Control Room before you go live.
Set encoder quality and test it
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point, not a universal preset. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, as well as AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose from the current table rather than copying one bitrate into every configuration. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate the VM can encode and the network can sustain continuously. More demanding video settings increase the workload even when the visual is mostly static.
- Set the video keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes the setting, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Use a stable audio format and bitrate compatible with the encoder and YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- Run an upload-speed test from the VM or its network path and leave capacity headroom instead of targeting the measured ceiling.
- Test with representative audio and visual motion before launch. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, listen for dropouts, and inspect the encoder logs.

Keep playback running and recover from failures
A 24/7 schedule needs more than starting the encoder once. Configure the playout application to repeat the intended program, configure the process to restart after a crash, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s reported stream health. Keep a documented way to reconnect the encoder or restart the broadcast, and verify that any automatic restart uses the current, protected stream key.

- Encoder process stops: inspect its logs and VM resource use, correct the underlying error, then restart it. Configure a process supervisor or equivalent restart policy rather than relying on a logged-in shell session.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: check the destination URL, key, encoder output, and network path. If the key was reset or exposed, update the encoder securely.
- Stream health degrades: check for bitrate instability, CPU pressure, and outbound bandwidth constraints; reduce the workload or choose a VM and stream profile that can sustain the feed.
- The VM or zone becomes unavailable: a single-instance deployment may stop broadcasting until service is restored. A more resilient architecture requires planning and testing beyond a restart setting.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different, managed media-processing architecture, not a way to make a self-managed VM encoder immortal. Its documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. Review the Live Stream API quotas and limits if considering that product; its behavior and pricing should be evaluated separately from the VM approach.

Being able to send audio to YouTube does not mean the music is cleared for a public livestream. You need permissions appropriate to the recordings, underlying compositions, territories, platform, and use. YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use copyright-protected music during a live stream to coordinate with their label or distributor to avoid issues such as copyright strikes; that guidance is not a license or a determination that a particular track is cleared.
