Short answer: an AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS input pulls a live playlist from an upstream HTTP or HTTPS source; it is not where you enter YouTube’s ingest URL. Configure the HLS input with the upstream playlist, then attach it to a MediaLive channel. Separately, choose an ingest protocol in YouTube Live Control Room and configure a supported MediaLive channel output to send the feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder streaming; HLS ingestion is a separate option.
Understand the direction of the stream
The word “input” is from MediaLive’s point of view. An HLS input tells MediaLive where to fetch media: it pulls segments referenced by an upstream HLS playlist. A YouTube ingest URL is a destination: an encoder or channel output sends media to YouTube. Do not paste a YouTube ingest URL into the MediaLive HLS input’s source URL field.
Think of the workflow as two separate configurations: source HLS playlist → MediaLive input → MediaLive channel → YouTube ingest destination. You need a working upstream playlist and the appropriate MediaLive output configuration for the YouTube protocol you select.
Before creating the MediaLive input
- Get the HLS playlist URL or URLs from the upstream source operator. Confirm that the playlist changes as a live stream; a static asset may be treated as video on demand.
- Get any required credentials for the HTTP/HTTPS source or encrypted HLS license server.
- Decide whether the channel will use a standard input/channel topology or a single-pipeline setup. AWS specifies two source URLs for a standard input and one for a single-class input.
- Choose the intended YouTube ingest protocol separately. YouTube’s RTMPS and HLS destination details come from Live Control Room, not from the HLS source operator.
A standard configuration’s two source URLs should point to genuinely available redundant upstream endpoints. Repeating the same URL does not establish source redundancy.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create and attach the HLS input
- In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Inputs, choose Create input, give the input a name, and set Input type to HLS. Follow AWS’s current input setup page for the exact fields shown in your account: AWS: Creating an HLS input.
- Choose the input class that matches the planned channel topology. Supply the required number of upstream source URLs: two for a standard input or one for a single-class input. Use actual redundant endpoints where the topology calls for two sources.
- Enter any required source credentials in the input configuration. AWS stores these credentials using Systems Manager Parameter Store password parameters. If the HLS source uses an encrypted-stream license server, configure its credentials as required by that source.
- Create the input. Then open the intended MediaLive channel and add the input under Input attachments, selecting the input you just created. See AWS: Attaching an input to a channel.
- For an HTTP/HTTPS HLS source that is a live stream, set Buffer segments to a value from 3 through 10 inclusive. AWS says a blank value or a value of 11 or more makes MediaLive treat the input as VOD. AWS does not recommend Amazon S3 as a live source. See AWS: HLS input buffer segments.
Choose and configure YouTube as the destination
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the intended stream and select its ingest protocol. YouTube’s stream key identifies the stream destination and lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; treat it as a secret. Use the URL and key shown for that stream and protocol. See YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
RTMPS for ordinary encoder streaming
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, for ordinary encoder streaming. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the relevant MediaLive channel output fields, but only if the output mode and configuration are supported for your channel. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets 4 seconds as the maximum. These are YouTube’s published encoder requirements and recommendations, not proof that a particular MediaLive configuration has been tested end to end. See YouTube: Encoder settings for live streams.

HLS ingestion when selected in YouTube
If you choose HLS ingestion, create or select a YouTube stream key using the HLS protocol. YouTube provides an HTTPS stream URL for that selection. Use the returned URL exactly, including its query fields, and substitute the stream key only where YouTube’s instructions specify. This is still a destination/output setup, not the MediaLive HLS input source. See YouTube: HLS ingestion.
YouTube’s documented HLS constraints for HDR ingestion are specific to that workflow: 1–4 second segments, MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Do not assume those HDR-specific constraints apply to every HLS stream mode; check YouTube’s current guidance for the selected stream.

Validate the configuration before going live
- Confirm the source playlist is live and its segments are available to MediaLive over HTTP/HTTPS.
- Confirm the input class and source count match the channel topology, and that redundant URLs are truly independent where used.
- Confirm Buffer segments is set in the live range for an HTTP/HTTPS live HLS input.
- Confirm the input is attached to the intended MediaLive channel.
- Confirm the YouTube stream protocol, URL, and key match the destination settings configured in the channel output.
- Validate output compatibility and run a controlled test using the actual channel and stream settings. AWS and YouTube documentation explain their respective configuration requirements; they do not establish that a particular MediaLive-to-YouTube setup has been tested or will work without validation.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
MediaLive reports a source or playlist problem
Check that the URL is the upstream HLS playlist, not YouTube’s ingest URL; verify HTTP/HTTPS reachability, credentials, and that the playlist and referenced segments are available. Confirm that the playlist is changing if the source is intended to be live.
The input behaves like VOD instead of live
For an HTTP/HTTPS live HLS source, inspect Buffer segments. AWS documents 3–10 as the live range; a blank value or 11 or more is treated as VOD.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The channel cannot use the input
Check that the input was created successfully and attached to the intended channel under Input attachments. Also verify that the input class and supplied source count fit the channel topology.
YouTube does not receive the feed
Check that the destination protocol is the one selected in Live Control Room, and that the matching URL and key are configured in the MediaLive output rather than in the input. For HLS, use the HTTPS URL supplied for the HLS-protocol stream key. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL and key. Recheck the output mode against current MediaLive support; the documented YouTube encoder settings alone do not establish a compatible MediaLive output configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded documentaries or other recordings looping on a YouTube channel, rather than route an upstream live HLS feed through MediaLive, StreamNeo is a different, simpler workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not a camera or an upstream MediaLive HLS input. Start the free first day.
