To stream a prerecorded file through Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube Live, publish the file as a live source in Wowza, configure a YouTube RTMP stream target, and choose the audience-facing latency in YouTube Live Control Room. Wowza’s live-lowlatency setting and YouTube’s Low or Ultra-low options control different parts of the chain; neither establishes a guaranteed end-to-end delay for this workflow.
How the two latency settings differ
Wowza Streaming Engine’s live-lowlatency is an Engine-side stream type. Wowza describes it as reducing frame buffering on receipt from the encoder for RTMP live streams, aimed at one-to-one or one-to-few video and audio chat. It does not select YouTube’s viewer playback mode. See Wowza’s low-latency RTMP setup and Application.xml stream types.
YouTube’s latency choice is made separately in Live Control Room and governs the viewer-facing live playback experience. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between camera capture and presentation to viewers; for a prerecorded file sent as a live feed, this choice still affects YouTube playback, but it does not make the source live camera footage. Configure and test both sides as needed. YouTube cautions: “Lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” (YouTube latency options.)
How to stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live with Wowza
- Create the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream. Keep its server URL and stream key available for the Wowza target. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where those values are used.
- Publish the file from Wowza as a live source. Wowza’s basic documented method enables
ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisheras a server listener and publishes the VOD file repeatedly until you stop it. For scheduled or more dynamic playback, Wowza points to scheduled streaming or server-side publishing workflows. Follow the Wowza file-as-live guide for the applicable Engine setup. - Add a YouTube Live stream target. In the Wowza live application, configure the target with YouTube’s destination host/application and the destination stream name/key. Wowza describes this target as RTMP and says YouTube automatically creates lower-bitrate renditions for adaptive playback. Use the Wowza YouTube target guide for the current configuration details.
- Set the Wowza stream type only if its purpose fits. If using Wowza’s RTMP low-latency handling, change
Streams/StreamTypein the live application’sApplication.xmltolive-lowlatency, then restart Wowza Streaming Engine as described in its setup guide. This is not a substitute for selecting a YouTube latency mode. - Choose YouTube viewer latency. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and go to Stream or Manage → Stream Settings → Stream latency. Pick a mode using the tradeoffs below.
- Check the push and preview. Confirm the Wowza stream target reports a successful connection and that a preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room. These checks confirm the stream is reaching YouTube; they do not establish a numeric end-to-end latency.

Use encoder settings YouTube accepts
For the YouTube contribution stream, follow the current YouTube encoder recommendations and match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate:
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data sent to Google.
- Video: H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps. Wowza’s technical specifications list RTMP input support for H.264 video and AAC-family audio; that confirms input support, not every possible target or transcoding configuration (Wowza technical specifications).
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not universal values; consult the full bitrate table for the actual source format and frame rate.

How to reduce delay without guessing
First decide whether viewers need to interact in near real time. If not, Normal latency prioritizes stability and supports 4K. If interaction matters, try Low or Ultra-low while accounting for increased buffering and the 4K restriction. Then test the actual file, Wowza configuration, YouTube mode, network path, and viewer player under the conditions that matter to your audience. No cited end-to-end measurement establishes a specific delay for this prerecorded-file → Wowza Streaming Engine → YouTube workflow. Do not treat latency figures from separate Wowza Video/HLS setups as results for this configuration.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The Wowza target does not connect: Check that the YouTube server URL and stream key were copied into the target correctly, and inspect the target status in Wowza. Recheck the target setup against the Wowza YouTube guide.
- YouTube has no preview: Verify that Wowza is publishing the file and that the target is pushing to YouTube; check both Wowza’s target status and Live Control Room preview before treating the stream as ready.
- The stream plays, but delay or buffering is worse than expected: YouTube notes that lower latency reduces read-ahead buffer and makes playback more sensitive to network and player conditions. Move to a more stable latency mode if the audience does not require rapid interaction.
- 4K is unavailable: Low and Ultra-low latency do not support 4K. Choose Normal if 4K is required.
- The file stops instead of repeating: The basic Wowza demo publisher is documented to repeat the VOD until terminated. Confirm you enabled and configured that publishing method; for schedules or dynamic playback, use the relevant Wowza server-side workflow described in its file-as-live documentation.
- Video or audio is incompatible: Check the source and contribution settings against YouTube’s supported codecs, bitrate guidance, keyframe interval, and audio formats. Wowza’s documented RTMP input support does not by itself guarantee compatibility for every encoding or target combination.
